Vonya Vists Arlene's

by Vonya Lee

Arlene has been an active participant in all that’s happened the past four years. She had been one of my late wives, Sandy’s best friends. I know now that my wife shared many of our secrets with her. Arlene owns a successful beauty salon and back in our partying days dealt coke on the side. Her side business actually made the salon viable in its early days. I’d always suspected she blamed me for the accident. Not that it mattered as I had blamed myself too. I was in counseling suffering from major depression for about a year after. I’d withdrawn from all remnants of our past life, friends included. I was a depressed, guilt ridden single dad raising an angry young daughter. Slowly I began to accept that what had happened wasn’t entirely my fault. We were both drunk that fateful night and when Sandy was drunk she got fierce. Short of knocking her out, I wouldn’t have been able to stop her from driving. One day Arlene stopped by the house convincing me she understood all I was going through, that I needed to start living again and talked me into going to a July 4th party she was throwing. It was at the party that I met Sara. I know now that it was prearranged.
