Rescue Me
by Lindsay Hart
5pm. Another day done. I was just shutting down my computer and getting ready to head home as the phone rang at my desk.
"Hello."
"Oh, Kelly, I'm so glad you haven't left. Somehow I knew you would still be there.
I can always count on you to give me a full day's work. I need help and don't know what to do"
The lady on the phone was Sabrina Roberts, my boss here at Roberts & Kline, an average sized accounting firm that's on the move. Our firm had saved a large sum of money for one of our clients last year and in turn the client had been recommending us to many of their contacts. Sabrina and I had a big part in that savings for our client last year. She is one of the main partners and one of the best business people I know. I count my blessings that I can work for her and learn from one of the best. At 24 yrs old, just a year older than me, she is one of the youngest partners working anywhere. She had inherited her side of the business from her father a couple of years back, but was a quick study. She already had a Masters Degree in Business and has worked hard to prove herself. She is cool and confident. But now she seemed rattled, almost in a panic.
"Ms. Roberts, calm down. What's wrong? Is it the Martin account? I'll have it ready by Thursday, I promise. I just …"
"Oh, no, Kelly. I'm not worried about that. It's just that my car has quit on me and I can't get my mechanic on the phone. I know nothing about cars. Kelly, can you come rescue me?"
My mind was saying 'That makes two of us that know nothing about cars,' but I even surprised myself when I heard my voice saying, "Of course, Ms. Roberts. I'd be happy to help. Tell me where you are."
"I was on my way home so I'm at the intersection of 5th and Tremont. There's not many people around and the ones that are, I'm not sure I trust."
"Yes I know where that is. It's actually about five miles from my apartment. I'm on my way. Just stay in the car and lock the doors and I'll be there shortly. Bye."
Oh my, gosh! What have I gotten myself into? I hope that it's something simple or I'm dead. She'll know that I'm an idiot. She won't want an idiot working for her. I'll lose my job. Maybe it's just a loose wire. I can jiggle the battery cables. I saw somebody do that once. I can do that. I never needed to learn about cars because I always had my cousin Vince. He's a mechanic. Whenever I had a problem I always called Vince and he would come fix it for me. Hey, that's it. I'll call Vince. He can tell me what to do before I get there and then I'll look smart in front of Sabrina. Wait, that's out. Vince left for Vegas on his honeymoon two days ago. I can call him there. No, bad idea.
He would kill me. I guess I'm on my own.
But, I really want to do this for Sabrina. Aside from making points with the boss, I also find myself attracted to her. Who wouldn't be? At 5'7" and about 130 lbs., long dark hair and eyes just as dark, with curves in all the right places. She was very sultry. I know that I'm just dreaming but lately I've thought she might have felt the same for me.
Come to think of it I have never heard of her having a date. On several occasions I have caught her looking at me oddly. Like she was studying my face or something. The first time I noticed her looking at me I got so flustered I had to run to the men's room and closely checked to make sure I hadn't left traces of make-up on me from the night before. But, I hadn't. And you couldn't see any sign of my camisole because I wear a jacket all the time. Most of the time I don't wear a tie, we're rather laid back, but I always wear a jacket. Yes, I like wearing woman's clothes. I'm not one of those gorgeous babes I've seen on the internet. On the other hand my male self could do a lot worse than date my female self. I stand about 5'9" and weigh about 140lbs. I exercise regularly to keep in shape and I've let my beach blonde hair grow out. Let's face it. Nobody cares that a junior accountant has a ponytail or might be slightly on the feminine side. I have gone out on a few occasions to one of the local gender fluid hangouts without any problems. But, other than that I haven't let anybody know my female Kelly. I think it's great that I have a name that can be either male or female. I don't have to try to remember a whole new name when I'm out enfemm. Too confusing.
As I turned onto Tremont I could see Sabrina's Cadi up ahead on the side of the road. It was one of those smaller Cadi's, but a Cadi none the less. Sabrina was leaning against her car as I pulled up and stopped behind it. Didn't I tell her to stay in the car and lock the doors?
She came to me and greeted me as I got out of the car. "Oh, Kelly, thank you so much for doing this for me. I don't know what I'd do without you."
"Well don't thank me yet. We still need to get it started. Let's take a look." I reached in and popped the hood and began looking at the mass of hoses and wires. It reminded me of an LA traffic jam. The engine area of her car was cleaner than my apartment. I found the battery and tried to wiggle the wires but they all seemed tight. I looked for any hose or wire that might have fallen off, all the while trying to act like I knew what I was doing. "Get in and try to start it," I told Sabrina.
I heard some clicking sounds but it just wasn't going to start. Just my luck. "I think the battery might be dead. Do you have any cables?"
"Yes, I believe there are some in the trunk."
I moved my car around to the front to … "jump" the battery I think they call it, as
Sabrina got her cables from the trunk of her car. Once the car was positioned correctly I had to figure out where the hood release thing was for my car. I had a Ford that was several years old. After about a minute of hunting I found the release and got the hood open. Sabrina handed me the cables and we both just sort of stood there looking at my engine. As clean as Sabrina's car engine was, mine was the complete opposite. There was no way I could get out of this without looking like Pig Pen from the Charlie Brown comics.
Sabrina must have had the same thought as she already had one arm out of the sleeve of my jacket before I knew what she was doing. "Here, let me have that. You don't want to ruin your jacket." Thinking only about the engine problem I let her take my jacket.
First, I bent over the engine and connected the cables to the battery of my car. She was behind me watching. As I bent over the engine, the back of my shirt drew tight, and without my knowing it, the outline of my camisole became evident.
As I turned around I noticed the big smile on her face but it didn't dawn on me why she was smiling. "Well, you're certainly in a better mood."
"Things are looking up," was all she said.
I collected the other end of the cables and started to attach them to Sabrina's battery. When I touched the second cable to the battery, there were sparks and a small explosion and I was knocked to the ground between the two cars. Sabrina ran over to me.
"Kelly, my god. Are you alright?" She cupped my face in her hands. Soft hands. Here was this angel looking down on me. Had I died?
I regained my senses and took inventory in my mind. I could hear her ask if I was alright. Hearing's ok. I could see her beautiful face in front of me. Sight's good.
I could feel her soft hands on my cheeks. That feels nice. I looked at my hands. One, two, three, … all my finger were still there. I felt ok and slowly made it to my feet.
I told Sabrina that I was ok but she still looked worried. Then I noticed the big crack in Sabrina's battery and some goo leaking onto the ground. Man, I've really done it this time. Sabrina's car wasn't going anywhere now. As my hands began to burn a little I realized that the goo leaking from the battery was battery acid and I had some on my hands and on my shirt.
"Battery acid," was all I had to say as I held my hands up.
"Don't move. I have some wet wipes in my car." She quickly found them and carefully began to wipe down my hands. The wet wipes eased the burning some but I would need to wash with soap and water soon. "Kelly, there's some on your shirt, too. We've got to get that off you." And with one swift motion from top to bottom all the buttons on my shirt went flying.
Then, there, bold as day, was my cream colored satin camisole with the pretty rose pattern all over it. I was busted. What could I do. I couldn't deny it. I was going to a costume party. Yeah, right. So I said nothing, just blushed and hung my head.
Sabrina smiled and continued to carefully remove my shirt. "Very nice. You have good taste." With the shirt off Sabrina checked to see if any of the acid had gotten onto my stomach or chest …, or camisole, but they appeared clean. She wiped down my hands again and then helped me put my jacket back on. I was glad there were few people around, and they didn't seem interested in what was going on with us.
"We've got to get you cleaned up. You said that you live about five miles from here?"
"Yeah, it's the apartments over on Parker Rd."
Sabrina checked to see if my car would start. We got lucky. I could use a little luck.
Sabrina told me to get in the passenger seat. She closed the trunk of her car and locked the doors. As she got behind the wheel she got out her cell phone and dialed a number.
"Hi, Johnny, hey, it's Sabrina. Not so good. No, I tried calling earlier but didn't get an answer. Yeah, can you go over to Tremont and 5th streets and pick up my car. Battery's messed up. Ok, when you get it fixed, bring it over to … Kelly, what's your address?"
"1433 Parker Rd. #310."
"Yeah, did you hear that? Ok. The hide a key is still in the same place. Thanks."
And off we went to my apartment.
It didn't take us long to get to my third floor apartment. We didn't speak until we got inside. Sabrina seemed surprised to learn I had a cat.
"That's Gwen, named after Gwen Stefani. She not really good for much but she keeps me company."
"What do you mean? She's adorable. I never would have taken you for a cat person. I'm finding out all kinds of things about you that I didn't know. Why don't you go clean up and I'll fix us a drink, or do you need some help?"
I blushed bright red at her comment. "No, I can manage. Help yourself to anything you can find. There's plenty of wine, there should be some beer in the frig and there whiskey in the cabinet."
"What can I fix for you?"
"I'll just have whatever you have."
In the bathroom I took off my jacket and camisole and confronted the reflection in the mirror. "How could you be so stupid? Now your secret is out, the woman you dream of, your BOSS, thinks you're a freak. She'll tell the whole office and you'll lose your job. Oh, did I forget to mention that you BLEW UP YOUR BOSS'S CAR. You are sooooo dead. What am I going to say to her?" I washed off with soap and water then went into the bedroom to change. I took off the panties and pantyhose I had been wearing, threw on some jeans and a t-shirt and went to the living room to face the music.
She asked to see my hands and I held them out. There were about 5 or 6 spots about the size of a pencil eraser where the acid had been and they were red.
"Not too bad, but you should put some antibiotic on the burns to be on the safe side. Sit."
Sabrina handed me a glass of white wine. Then she sat next to me on the couch with her wine. Gwen jumped in my lap purring for attention. We both just sat there for a few seconds and then we both started at the same time.
"Sabrina, about the camisole …"
"Kelly, I'm so sorry … "
"You're sorry? For what? I'm the one that blew up your car."
"Yes, but you were doing something that I had asked you to do. If I hadn't asked you, you wouldn't have gotten burned. And it's just the battery, not the car. No big deal. Don't worry about it. And about the camisole, … that's no big deal either. You have the right to wear what ever you want to wear. You looked good in it, too. It's too bad you have to hide it under a shirt."
I couldn't believe I was hearing this. Maybe my luck was changing. Maybe I wasn't going to be dead after all.
"Kelly, I don't mean to embarrass you but, could I ask you some questions, …, you know, …, about your girl stuff?"
"I'm not sure I can get any more embarrassed than I was when you pulled my shirt open."
"Oh, I'm sorry about the shirt. I'll buy you a new one, … or, … a blouse if you prefer," she said with a little mischievous smile.
I started to turn red again but, decided to answer her questions. "What would you like to know?"
"Tell me all about it. I want to hear everything. So, what other girlie things do you like to wear? Do you go out dressed up? What size do you wear? Do you …"
And so, for the next hour we sipped our wine and played twenty questions, although it seemed more like a thousand. I explained that when I was ten years old my older sister had dressed me up as a girl for Halloween and we both found it enjoyable. We played dress-up many times after that. We had even gone out on a double date once when I was 14. We had gone to the movies with a couple of Beth's guy friends. My date was very nice and the only thing that happened was he held my hand during the movie and kissed me on the cheek at the end of the night. I think my mother knew about our dress-up sessions, although she never said anything. I remember once when I was 12, I came home from school to find a pair of panties and a night gown that Beth had been letting me sleep in sitting on my bed. I thought I had hidden them pretty well under my bed. But there they were, washed and folded on my bed. Mom never mentioned it and I was too embarrassed to say anything. Dad was already out of the picture by then as he and mom divorced when I was eight. We didn't see him much.
Sabrina also shared some of her life story with me. She told me that she has a brother, three years younger than her. Robert is away at college now and plans to go into medicine. She told me they grew up with an alcoholic mother who drank herself to death, and a workaholic father. When she was 13 her mother died of cirrhosis of the liver, and she had taken it upon herself to be a better housewife and mother than her mother had been. Even though her father worked long hours, Sabrina always made sure they had a hot meal ready when he came home. Sabrina did all the house keeping, laundry, cleaning, ironing, sewing and always made sure there was food in the house. She would help Robert with his homework and let him be a normal boy but at the same time trying hard to keep him out of too much trouble. Her early childhood was spent ducking her mother's drunken rages but always protecting Robert. Her teen years were spent trying to make a good home life for her father and brother. She told me that she knows her father loved them, but apparently thought it was more important to work hard to provide a decent living for his family than it was to spend quality time with them. Sabrina had grown up fast and never had the normal childhood she should have had, but she was determined that Robert would have better. I actually let a few tears fall as Sabrina told her story.
When we finished telling our stories and it seemed Sabrina had run out of questions, we had emptied the bottle of wine we had been working on and we were snuggled close to each other on the couch. We had each shared some very personal moments in our lives and we were emotionally and physically closer to each other than we had ever been.
"Kelly, would you do me a favor?"
"Well, sure. What is it that you want?"
"I'd really like to see the other Kelly. I want to meet HER."
"I don't know. Are you sure?"
"Yes, I'm sure. I already told you what you wear doesn't matter to me. I want to be friends with both of you. Maybe we could be girlfriends and go shopping or to the clubs and stuff. Wouldn't that be fun? Please?"
"Yes, that would be fun. If I do this, you have to promise not to laugh."
"I promise, I won't laugh."
"Ok, I'll go change," I conceded.
"Oh, goody! This is going to be so much fun. While you're getting dressed, I'll find us something to eat. Do you have anything here to cook or should we order in?"
"Either way is fine. There should be some hamburger meat in the frig."
"That will work. I'll open another bottle of wine."
So I went to my room to get ready for my unveiling. This would be the first time that anybody I knew would see my female "Kelly". I was nervous as hell. I so wanted to make a good impression. After all, this was not just a friend but also my boss. What should I wear? Should I go for sexy or demure? Business woman, or slut? I ruled out slut pretty quickly. That wasn't the image I wanted Sabrina to see for the first time. Sabrina gets enough business women during the day so that's out. Sexy, or Demure? Sabrina had said we could be friends but hadn't said anything about being sexually attracted to me, so we better stick with demure. That settled I knew just what I wanted to wear. I went to my closet and found it still in the plastic bag from the store. I hadn't even had a chance to wear it yet. It was a mid calf, full skirted, flower print georgette dress, with a handkerchief hem line and short flutter sleeves. It was gorgeous.
I keep my body hairless so the first thing I did was glue on my breast forms. Next was my lingerie. I chose a matching set, satin and lace bra, panty, garter, and slip in
periwinkle. I think it's so sexy when you have all matching lingerie. Then I started to clean up. I gave my face a quick shave then started on my eye makeup while my face rested. Then on went the foundation, blush, and, lipstick. I brushed my long hair into gentle feminine waves and went to get dressed. The dress looked as good on me as I thought it would. It hadn't been on sale and I was in drab when I bought it, but when I saw it I just had to have it. My 4 inch white, open toed pumps showed off my always painted toe nails. A couple of rings, earrings, a necklace and a spritz of perfume and I was ready. Darn butterflies, please go away. I really don't want to throw up on my new dress, … or Sabrina.
As I walked down the hall to the living room I noticed the lights were down but there seemed to be a soft glow there. Sabrina had found some candles and had lit several of them all around the room. Sabrina was just putting the hamburger patties and green beans on the table which also had lit candles on it. When she saw me her mouth gapped open.
Sabrina said, "Oh, my god!"
I thought she was appalled. I got a hurt look on my face and started to tear up. "You hate me don't you?"
I started to retreat, but Sabrina caught me half way down the hall. "Oh, Kelly, no! You are beautiful. I was just surprised. I didn't expect you to be so, … , so feminine. Come into the living room and let me get a better look at you. Do a twirl for me. That dress looks fantastic on you."
I calmed down and began to enjoy showing off for my friend.
Sabrina said, "I want to see your other clothes, you can model for me, … , but we better save that until after dinner. Come sit down. Your dinner is getting cold and I put a lot of effort into that hamburger steak."
"And the green beans. Don't forget the green beans. They get their feeling hurt so easily."
"Well, we wouldn't want that would we?" We both laughed and sat down to eat.
We ate and drank more wine and just acted like a couple of girlfriends all through dinner.
I can't remember when I've been so relaxed and comfortable with a friend. And never when I was wearing a pretty dress. We talked about makeup, and heels, and fashion and heels, and even boys. I was having so much fun I don't remember what all I said. After dinner we found ourselves on the couch cuddling and kissing. Gwen must have been jealous because she was jumping all over the place rubbing up against us. Then, she must have gotten bored since she finally left us alone. That's when it happened.
I heard something fall and looked over to see Gwen on the dinning room table licking a plate. She had knocked one of the candles over and onto the carpet. I yelled and must have scared Gwen because she scampered off the table knocking the greasy hamburger plate onto the floor as well. The combination of the candle and the grease just took off.
The flames spread as Sabrina and I jumped up to combat the fire. It wasn't working. We were just making it worse. Sabrina realized that we needed help and she dialed 911. I kept trying to put the fire out but it was spreading too fast. The flames were now blocking our exit through the door. Sabrina and I were both coughing and gasping for air so I threw a chair through the living room window. We were debating jumping when the fire department arrived. They set up their equipment quickly and got a ladder up to us and there was a fireman to help us down. Sabrina went first then I started to climb out the window when I thought of Gwen. I went back in and found her hiding under a small table in the corner. I handed Gwen out to the fireman and he handed her down to another down the ladder. I started to climb out the window and the fireman took my hand.
"Your turn, Miss," he said. Then it dawned on me that I was still dressed as a woman. Oh, great what else is going to happen? The fireman heaved me across his shoulder and carried me down the ladder to safety. He rescued me. When we got to the ground he gently put me down and brushed some hair out of my face.
"Are you alright, Miss?"
"Huh, oh, yes, I think I'm ok. Thank you."
"Just doing my job, Miss, …?"
"What, oh, I'm sorry, Hart. Kelly Hart."
"Well, Miss Hart, I'm John. Let's get you over to the wagon and let the paramedics check you out."
"Thank you, John. Where's Sabrina?"
"Your friend is already being checked."
"And Gwen?" I asked.
"Gwen?" the fireman looked puzzled.
"Gwen's my cat."
Another fireman brought Gwen to me. I held her tight and scolded her just a little bit. "You naughty girl! See what you've done."
"Your cat did this?"
I gave John the short version as he walked me to the ambulance.
Sabrina saw me walking to the ambulance and met me wrapping her arms around me and squishing Gwen in the process. We didn't talk. We sat down in the ambulance and let the paramedics check us out. As the paramedics finished John, the fireman that had rescued me came up to Sabrina and I with some papers.
"Are you ladies ok?"
Sabrina answered for us, "Yes, we're fine, just a little shaken up."
"Which one of you lives here?"
"That would be me," I answered.
"Miss Hart, …"
"Please, call me Kelly." I was a little un-nerved that I was out in public dressed as a woman and this fireman who had just rescued me from my burning apartment knew my real name and was calling me "Miss". I decided "Kelly" would be better than "Miss".
"Alright, Kelly. I'm sorry to tell you this, but the fire got most of the apartment. What is not totally burned has bad smoke and water damage. I'm afraid it's a total loss. Do you have some place to stay?"
"She can stay with me. I'm Sabrina Roberts. We work together at Roberts and Kline."
"Good. Kelly, I need you to sign this form for me, acknowledging that the apartment is condemned and off limits until we finish our investigation and render it safe to re-enter."
I took the clipboard and signed in the appropriate place.
"I'll have some other papers tomorrow, I can bring them by your work if that's ok. Again, I'm sorry for your loss. I hope the rest of the evening goes better for you. Good night, ladies."
I was still kind of in shock, all I could answer was, "Yes, that will be fine. Thank you, John."
Then I saw her, Mrs. Finkle, the apartment manager. She was a busy body who seem to know everybody's business. She was asking one of the firemen "Is Kelly alright? Where is Kelly? " One of the helpful firemen pointed in our direction and said, "she's over there."
"Hi, Mrs. Finkle. It's me, Kelly."
To her credit she didn't even bat an eye. "Oh, Kelly, you poor dear. Are you ok?"
"Yes, Mrs. Finkle, I'm just fine. I'm sorry about the fire."
"Oh, don't worry about that dear. The insurance company will work it out. But, I understand that Gwen knocked over a candle?"
"Yes, that's true."
"Well, I wish I had a vacant apartment for you but I won't have a vacancy until next week. I don't have it rented, yet. I could hold it for you."
"Thank you, Mrs. Finkle. I'll let you know in a couple of days. I'll be staying with Sabrina for a while. Are any of the other apartments damaged?"
"Maybe a little smoke or water damage but, not that anybody will have to move out. The apartment directly below you had some maintenance problems anyway and was unoccupied. I'll hold the next vacancy until you let me know. You and Gwen are always welcome here. By the way, for what you've been through tonight, I've never seen you look lovelier."
I'm sure you could tell I was blushing even by the light of the street light.
Then, out of all of the chaos here comes Johnny, Sabrina's mechanic. "Sabrina, I've got your car ready. I only had to replace the battery and a few burned wires. It's parked right over here."
Finally some good news.
"Miss Hart?"
Oh, great. Now what? I turned around to see a man in uniform, with a gun and a badge.
"Yes, officer, what can I do for you?"
"I'm Officer Johnson. The Police department responded to the fire to help out the fire department so we file a report also. I got your account of what happened from John Parker, the fireman. If you would just read it over and if everything is correct then just sign it where the "X" is."
I scanned the report and everything seemed correct, so I signed it and passed it back to Officer Johnson.
"Thank you Miss Hart. If there is anything you need, you can reach me at the station.
Good night."
Sabrina, held me close, and said, "I'm sooo sorry, Kelly. This is all my fault. Whatever you need I'll make sure you get. You just have to ask."
"Sabrina, how was all this your fault? You didn't start the fire."
"I might as well have started the fire. I'm the one who lit all those candles. I should have known that cats and candles don't mix. But look on the bright side. Now you don't have to do all that laundry I saw piled up in the hall."
I lay my head on her shoulder and just started crying like a baby. "Kelly, I'm sorry, I was trying to make a joke to ease the tension."
"I know, Sabrina. When you said that, all I could think about were all my beautiful dresses, and lingerie, and now it's all gone. And my beautiful heels."
"Don't worry, sweetheart, we'll get you new things. For now though, let's get you to my house and get you a nice hot bath, and a good stiff drink."
I couldn't argue with that. Both sounded pretty good right about then.
The drive to Sabrina's home took about 10 minutes. Sabrina took me straight to her bedroom up stairs.
"You get undressed and I'll draw you a bath."
I undressed down to my panties and bra and left everything in a pile on the floor next to the bed. I didn't want to lay them on the bed because everything smelled of smoke. Sabrina called to me and I walked into the bathroom. She gasped and then smiled as I walked in. I took my panties and bra off and stepped into the foamy tub, my breast forms still glued on. Sabrina watched me intently with a smile on her face. Lavender. What a nice scent. Sabrina had me tilt my head back and she washed my hair.
"You relax. I'll put something out for you to sleep in. How about a Brandy?"
"Sounds good. Thank you, Sabrina."
She left and a little while later she returned with my drink.
"I've given Gwen some milk and a little bit of left over chicken. We'll get food and a cat box tomorrow, but she'll be alright for tonight. Do you need anything else right now?"
"No, I'm good."
"Ok. You can sleep in here tonight. Your gown is on the bed. Make yourself at home. I'm going into the other bath and clean up. Yell if you need anything."
I don't know how long I stayed in the bath after she left, but the water was beginning to cool. I got out and dried off then borrowed her hair dryer. When I was done I finished my Brandy and went to the bedroom. On the bed was a beautiful red night gown with lavish lace and a matching pair of panties. I put them on, turned out the light, and slipped between the sheets that had already been turned back. I replayed in my head everything that had happened over the last few hours wondering what would happen now. I heard Sabrina come into the room, slip into bed and felt her cuddled up next to me. It felt wonderful to hold her. We fell asleep in each others arms.
*****
When I awoke the next morning Gwen was purring around my head, and Sabrina was already up. I held Gwen for a minute then looked at the clock. It was already 8 am and we would be late for work. I didn't really feel like going to work anyway. Besides I didn't have anything to wear. I found a robe on the bed post that matched my gown and slipped it on. I went down to the kitchen and found Sabrina already dressed and drinking coffee.
"Good morning, Sabrina. You should have woken me up. Is there any of that left?"
"Sit down, I'll get you a cup. I've already called Cathy and told her about the fire and told her we would be late this morning."
"Sabrina, do I have to go to work this morning?"
"Yes, you do. What's done is done. You shouldn't brood about it. Everything will work out. Besides, that cute fireman said he was going to bring some papers to the office today and he will expect you to be there. What was his name?"
"John, …, Parker I think. But, I don't have any clothes to wear."
"I think I can find you something of mine you can wear. Bring your coffee and we'll see what we can find."
In Sabrina's bedroom she went to her closet and began pulling out dresses and skirts.
"Sabrina, you're already dressed. I thought we were looking for something for me?"
"These are for you. Which one do you like?"
"I can't wear a dress to work! Everyone will laugh at me. Don't you have some pants and a shirt that look like men's clothes?"
"First off, nobody will laugh at you or they will get fired by me. Secondly, last night John the fireman met a woman named Kelly, not a man. He is expecting to see a woman today. Thirdly, pants are out. You and I are about the same size in body, but you are taller than I am. My dresses and skirts should fit you ok, but my pants will be too short on you. And lastly, it's going to be hard to hide those puppies on your chest unless you stopped to get the glue remover from your apartment before we left last night."
"Oh, I hadn't thought about that. Well, I guess I just have to tell John the truth."
"Are you crazy? Do you want to go to jail?"
"What are you talking about? Why would I go to jail for being dressed as a woman last night?"
"Sweetheart! Don't you remember? Last night you signed not just one, but two official reports that listed you as a female. Those are official government documents and they kind of frown on people filing false reports. And, yes, you could go to jail."
I started to cry and asked, "What am I going to do?"
"You are going to get dressed, go into the office, hold your head up high and make the best of it. You know I'll help you any way I can. Let's get you dressed."
What could I do? I knew she was right. Sabrina handed me some of her white lingerie, bra, panties, and slip and I put them on. Then some nude colored nylons. I chose a short slim skirt and a white blouse with a little lace trim. You could see my lacy bra and slip through the thin blouse. Sabrina wiped off my own white heels from last night and saw they weren't damaged. She did my makeup for me and gave me some pointers as she went. It was much better than I have ever been able to do. Then she used a curling iron on my hair. When she was finished I couldn't hide the smile on my face. I loved the feminine wavy bounce that my hair had. I thanked her and hugged her tightly, then she handed me a purse and we were off to the office.
I was very nervous as we walked to Sabrina's office. As we passed people walking by or at their desks they would smile and greet Sabrina with a "Good morning Miss Roberts." They would look at me and smile I guess it didn't register who I was. There were no laughs or snickers. As we got to Cathy's desk, Sabrina's secretary, we stopped and Sabrina checked for any messages or mail. Cathy talked to Sabrina but she was looking at me.
"Good morning Miss Roberts. Your 1pm appointment cancelled. Is Kelly alright? I mean, he didn't get hurt or any …, OH, MY GOD, …, KELLY? Wow! You look great. You're very pretty. But, I don't get it. What's going on?"
"I'm fine, Cathy. Thank you for asking."
Sabrina said, "It's a long story, but the short version is that all of Kelly's clothes burned up in the fire. I'll explain a little bit at the staff meeting. Let everyone know that it will be in about 15 minutes. And bring Kelly and I some coffee, please."
"Yes, Miss Roberts."
We went into Sabrina's office and she could tell I was still nervous. She took both my hands in hers and said, "See, Cathy thinks you're pretty. It's going to be ok. You'll see."
Cathy returned in a few minutes with our coffee and told Sabrina that everybody would be waiting in the conference room. Sabrina opened some mail and checked her e-mail and when she was done she stood up and asked if I was ready. I just nodded my head.
We walked into the conference room and Sabrina had me follow her to the front of the room. She quieted the room and began.
"Everyone, I would like to introduce you to a new employee, who is an old employee. This is Kelly Hart."
There were some wide eyes, shocked faces and gasps and some whispers. Sabrina calmed the room again.
"Through no fault of her own and because of a series of unfortunate accidents, Miss Hart will be working in place of Mr. Hart. For how long we can not say at this point. Kelly has been through a lot in the last couple of days and I expect you all to be a comfort to her as much as possible. There will be no jokes, rude comments, or harassment of any kind. Anyone caught doing so will be immediately fired. If anyone outside this room finds out that Kelly is not a real woman, the person that leaked the information will be fired. Help Kelly out here. Let's make her feel welcome. Now let's go back to work."
As the meeting adjourned some of the girls came up to me and welcomed me. A few gave me hugs and said they had heard about the fire and that all my clothes had burned up. Two of the girls, Robin and Emily both told me they thought they had some old clothes that would fit me and they would be glad to donate to my cause. I was so happy that most of the girls at least seemed to be accepting me as a woman. None of the men had approached me yet and I didn't know what they were thinking. I saw Sabrina standing at the door to her office as we left the conference room and she smiled at me and gave me a "thumbs up" sign. I mouthed "thank you" to her and we all drifted back to work and I went to my desk
Through out the morning some of the girls would stop by and chat, which they never did before. Robin said that about five of the other girls and her were going to lunch at 12:30 and they all wanted to invite me to join them. I thought I really had nothing to loose now and I was starting to like the attention so I accepted her invitation. Around 10:30 am Brad, the only real male friend I had at the office, came by to see how I was doing.
"Hi, Kelly. Emily and Robin were just filling me in about the fire and all your clothes. What a bummer. Is there anything I can do for you?"
"Some men's clothes would be nice."
"Sorry, pal. I wouldn't have a single thing that would fit you. Besides, uh, …, don't take this the wrong way or anything, but, …, you look hot as a woman."
"BRAD!"
"No, I mean it. You look really good. If I didn't know you, I would never guess that you're a guy. So, …, uh, …, what's it like to wear girls stuff?"
"Well, at first it's kind of strange, but the clothes are really soft and once you get used to them it's not bad."
"You look like you've REALLY gotten used to them."
I turned away and blushed.
"No, I just meant that you seem comfortable, uh, natural, yah. I mean you don't act like a guy in a dress. Ya know, …, if you want to go out sometime, …, for a drink I mean, …, if you want a guy to talk to, …".
I couldn't tell if he was just nervous and being polite talking to his guy friend who was wearing a dress, or if he was actually hitting on me.
"Thanks, Brad. I'll think about it. What do the guys think about this?"
"Oh, most of them are ok with it. They know you're in a bad spot right now. Jack, though. Well, you know what a jerk he is. I think he's just jealous. But, I don't think you'll hear anything from Jack. We kind a put the fear of god in ta him. Don't ask. You don't really want ta know. Well, I'll see you later, Kelly."
"Bye, Brad." I couldn't help but wonder what they did to Jack.
I did manage to get some work done and actually forgot what I was wearing. At 12:30 Robin came and got me and we met up with the rest of the girls. Lunch was very enjoyable. The girls had always treated me well but now they were treating me like I was one of them. I relaxed and joined in the conversations and had a blast. Emily told a funny story about her boyfriend trying to show off with one of those sensitive touch lighters. He was trying to demonstrate how sensitive it was by touching his tongue to it to light it. He ended up singeing the hair in his nose. We all broke up over that one. I can't remember when I've laughed so much. I really needed a laugh.
We all went back to work in a good mood walking in arm-in-arm and still laughing. The fact that none us could remember what we were laughing at didn't matter.
At 3 pm Sabrina called me on the intercom and said that John was there with the papers for me. I took a deep breath and walked into Sabrina's office.
"Miss Hart, how are you today?"
"Kelly, remember? I'm fine thank you, John"
"Of course, Kelly. This is the final report. I also need to know if you had insurance?"
"Why, yes. I did take out renters insurance when I moved in there. I had forgotten all about it."
"Well, we don't see any discrepancy with your account of the fire and the evidence at the scene so we are closing our investigation, and you shouldn't have any trouble collecting your insurance money. If your insurance company has any questions just tell them to call me."
"Thank you so much for being so helpful, John."
"Kelly, I don't normally do this, …, but, would you like to go out some time?"
I was a little shocked and I guess Sabrina was too. I saw her raise an eyebrow when John asked that.
I hesitated, then said, "I would love to go out with you, …" I saw Sabrina's face change to a look of disappointment. "but, …, I think I've found somebody. Thank you anyway, John."
Sabrina's eyes perked up and a smile came back to her lovely face. I smiled back at her.
"Well, you know where to find me. Good luck." John shook my hand before walking out the door.
Sabrina rushed over and shut the door behind him then turned to me. We embraced and began a long passionate kiss. When we finally parted Sabrina smiled and said, "Fix your lipstick sweetheart. We're taking the rest of the day off. You need some new clothes."
Sabrina drove and when she pulled up in front of a fancy department store I turned to her and said, "Sabrina, I can't afford Neiman Marcus."
"Don't worry about it. This round of shopping is on me. I told you I would buy you a new blouse. We'll just get a few other things to go with that blouse."
We were like two kids in a candy store. I never knew shopping could be so much fun. But then I never had anybody help me shop for girl clothes before. I tried on skirts and dresses and suits, everything we could find. I was trying on a particularly sharp skirt suit when I saw Sabrina watching me intently. Her smile was gone. She had something serious on her mind.
"What's wrong, Sabrina?"
"Kelly, you know, …, if you want, I'll buy you some men's things. Do you want to buy some men's clothes?"
I smiled back at her and answered, "Whatever for? At least not today. We'll see what the future holds for me, but today and at least for a while I'm a woman."
Sabrina's eyes lit up and her smile came back as big as ever and we gave each other a huge hug. We hit the lingerie department and I swear that girl must have bought me one of everything. It took us better than 30 minutes to check out. The two sales girls that helped us didn't mind. I know they were already thinking of ways to spend their commissions.
We took our purchases back to Sabrina's and put everything away. Then we cleaned up a little and changed clothes before going out to a nice restaurant to eat dinner. I chose a very feminine, flowing halter dress in red for Sabrina. I wanted to see her in something other than what she usually wears to the office. She looked stunning. She chose a very short LBD for me. It was actually too short for my taste but Sabrina asked me to wear it, so how could I not. We both looked pretty hot, and we certainly turned some heads at the restaurant. The meal was wonderful and I really felt great being out dressed as a woman on a date with my new girlfriend. I was more comfortable and relaxed than I have ever been. The whole thing just seemed, …, natural. Sabrina and I went home and had several sessions of wild, passionate love making. I was in heaven. I didn't know that life could be so fantastic.
*****
The next morning I dressed in my new blue skirt suit that I had liked so much trying it on, and we set off to work. Before I could even sit down at my desk Robin and Emily were there each holding some clothes on hangers.
Robin said, "Good morning, Kelly. We each went through our closets and brought you some things we think you might like."
"I think some of the other girls have some things for you, too," said Emily.
"Oh, my god. That's so sweet of you. You guys are the best friends a girl could ever want. Thank you so much," and we did a girl group hug.
Emily said, "Kelly, that suit looks great on you, I'm jealous."
"Thanks. Sabrina bought this for me last night. She's so wonderful."
Robin replied, "Ahhh! Is our little girl smitten?"
"Come on you two. I've always thought she was nice."
"She seems nice. We just don't know her very well," said Emily.
"Well, if you don't mind, maybe I can help change that. Why don't we invite Sabrina to join us for lunch?"
Robin said, "That's a great idea. Do you think she'll go?"
"I think I can convince her. I'll go talk to her now. Thanks again for clothes."
Robin said, "Bye. See you around noon."
I went to Sabrina's office and Cathy told me how much she liked my suit. I told her thank you and asked if Sabrina was busy. Cathy said she wasn't and said I could go in.
I went in and closed the door behind me.
"Kelly, we just got here a short time ago. Don't tell me, you just couldn't stand being away from me so long." She came to me and put her arms around me.
"You caught me. I missed you already." I gave her a deep kiss. "But, I do have an ulterior motive for being here. The girls have invited you to go to lunch with us. I had so much fun with them yesterday. I know you will, too."
"Kelly, I don't know if that's such a good idea. There's supposed to be a separation of management and workers. Besides what if they don't like me? It would be awkward."
"How could they not like you? You can earn a lot of points with the staff if you loosen up a little and show them that you're just as human as they are. Give them a chance. I want them to get to know you like I know you. Well, …, maybe not exactly like I know you, but you know what I mean. I think it could be good for everybody."
Sabrina laughed at the 'get to know' her comment. "Ok, I respect your instincts. I'll give it a try. But if I make a fool of myself I'm going to blame you. Come find me when it's time to go." We kissed again and I went back to my desk.
About an hour and a half later I was just getting ready to check out the coffee pot when who would show up, but Jack. And he was carrying a clothing bag.
"Jack? Uh, …, hi.?"
"Hi, Kelly. Uh, …, you look nice. Look, I really don't understand what's going on with you, but Ron, and Brad and some of the girls suggested I should be nice to you. I don't have any dresses to give to you like Emily and Robin, so, I went out and bought this for you, just to show I don't hate you." Jack pulled the plastic up off the dress. "See, I even picked it out myself."
It was a silk dress in some sort of print thingy, with lots of ruffles. Oh, it was horrid. I'm sure it was expensive and Jack was so proud of himself that he had picked it out all by himself. But, it really was awful. Jack can be a pain but I didn't want to hurt his feelings. And I'm sure he didn't even realize that he was fondling the material of the dress as we spoke. I took the dress and hung it up on my coat rack.
"Thank you, Jack. That was very thoughtful of you. I know we can be friends." Before he had a chance to react I reached over and gave him a kiss on the cheek. Poor man turned bright red and almost ran down the hall. I wish I knew what Ron and Brad had said to him.
At lunch with the girls the first ten minutes was kind of stiff. But I managed to steer Sabrina into more of the conversations and soon she was laughing and cutting up as much as the rest of us. The girls finally got to see a different side to their boss and everybody was glad she had joined us. We were all in a good mood when we went back to work.
That night Sabrina and I decided to stay in and I offered to cook. Mom had been a pretty good cook and I had learned a lot from her. I fixed a garlic chicken dish that I had seen in a woman's magazine recently. I'm glad it turned out well since I had never made it before. After dinner we cuddled up on the couch to talk.
"Kelly, I'm going to make an announcement next week but I wanted you to be the first to know. Old man Kline has agreed to sell me his part of the business. We've been working out the details with our attorney's and it will be final on Monday."
I wrapped my arms around her neck and gave her a kiss. "That's wonderful. I'm so happy for you."
"We've known for some time now and I've done a lot of thinking on the subject. I don't think I can run the company by myself. I'm going to need a manger, somebody that I can count on."
"Oh, I agree. You shouldn't have to run the company without a manager. Who do you have in mind. Maybe I can give you some insight and advice. Ann might be a good choice."
"Well, last year I would have agreed with you but in the last six months or so her work has been sloppy. At this point Ann may be lucky to keep her job. But, I'm not going to make that decision. As my new manager, that decision will made by you."
"Me! Sabrina, there several people who have been there longer than I have. Why me?"
"Kelly, longevity certainly counts for something. But there are other things that have to be considered. Your work over the past year has been excellent, you're honest to a fault, I know I can trust you, and you've always been there when I needed you. Kelly, I need you now."
"Sabrina, I'm flattered, but, I have to ask. Does this have anything to do with our current relationship?"
"Absolutely not! I told you I have been thinking about this for some time, well before the last few days. I still would have offered you the position if none of this had happened. You deserve it. And, if you want to go back to being a man, I will not withdraw the offer."
I smiled and said, "Thank you. Then I guess I'm your girl, in more ways than one."
Sabrina was happy that I had accepted her offer. We cuddled and kissed then sat silently in each others arms for a long time. Finally, I spoke again.
"Sabrina, would it be too much of a problem at work if the old Kelly didn't come back?"
Sabrina showed me that great smile again and replied, "I think we can work it out, sweetheart. I know the owner, and I happen to be very close to the new manager."
