The Office Hunt
by Jill Micayla
I sat quietly at my desk typing the reports for my boss. I had been with the company five years and was the secretary for the president of the company. I was so busy with different reports that Marcy, my closest friend had to tap my desk to remind me it was coffee break time. I went to the break room and all of the other secretaries were talking about the company had a man working as a woman as an employee. Dianne Jensen said that the thing is the person has been with the company for at least three to five years. I sat and listened to each of them speak aloud as to whom it could be. The group finally decided that the transsexual was the girl in accounting she looked very manly on some days. I asked Helen Martin if she was sure, because if a rumor got out and it was wrong then there would be an investigation and whoever started the rumor would be dismissed.
"Listen to you miss president's secretary." Spoke Caitlin Barnes "Just because you probably know you are going to keep us in the dark." I asked if she thought I was the one as she seemed on the attack. "Not you missy," she said "I've seen you naked at the spa and if you are a guy you are very well built."
When the break was over my phone was ringing constantly as the others were trying to get me to give them a hint. I told them that under company policy I could not deny nor confirm there was a guy working for the company as a woman. Did I know? I knew exactly who the person was and I was not going to tell anyone. I had known from the day I began as the presidents' secretary. I have seen many things in this company and I have kept silent about each of them.
A lunch hour came and a few of the girls wanted to take me to lunch. I told them bribery would not get me to say who the person was.
Marcy was sitting and watching each woman give me stares. I told them that when they decided to retire I would divulge then who the he/she was. I told them that they needed to give each woman in the company a very close look. I told them that they needed to do it discretely and without incident.
Sue Ellen Batcher one of the thinkers in the group came up with an idea. She decided to get photos of all the females and tell then that it was for a make over. She said that a team would look over the photo's and then decide who was going to get the prize. I reminded her, and any thing that had a reward had to be approved by my boss. I told Sue Ellen to put the request in and I would have my boss approve it. I reminded her that there needed to be a winner and that the money had to come from donations. I offered fifty dollars toward the make over. Each secretary put in fifty dollars.
Each day at lunch I watched Sue Ellen and Patsy Larson go to the cafeteria and take pictures of each female employee. Three months had passed and they still had not gotten all of the female employees pictures taken. The group excluded the secretaries as it was confirmed by Sue Ellen and Caitlin that none of us could even look manly enough to even think about ever having been a man.
I was in Gregory Matthews office picking up the daily reports and he asked me how the search was going for the woman who would be winning a make over. I told him they were still getting female employees pictures. Gregory asked me to sit and tell him what the under pinning was that created this hunt. I told him about that day in the break room. He laughed when I told him the whole story. He said that they needed more work to keep them busy. He asked if I was going to tell them who it was. I told him only if they hogtied me and poured honey all over me and let the ants loose. Gregory and I were once lovers. He was dating me when I was in college and had asked me to come to his company to be his secretary. He wanted me as a companion secretary and I told him that lets see how the boss secretary works out first.
We had since then slowly drifted apart. I do not know why but I feel it is our work relationship. I smiled at him as he looked at me and then he came over and asked me to stand. Our lips met and I knew that old zing was still there. I told him that we needed to compose ourselves and get back to business. He told me he was leaving for an overseas trip and would be gone two weeks. He asked if I wanted to come with him. I told him it might be nice but we did not need the company wondering about us.
He asked me if I was willing to move up in my position and I told him that right now we both needed this job. I let him know he was constantly on my mind and that when I get my masters in psychology then we can become a number again. He wanted to know how long and I told him six more months.
I went back to my desk only to be surrounded by irate females. I got them settled and then asked why they were here. One of the girls stepped forward and said they did not want to participate in the make over competition and had managed not to get their pictures taken. There were eight females standing before me. The spokesperson said that they heard why the pictures were being taken and then asked if we could meet where we all could talk. I took them to the conference room and locked the door.
Each female told me that they were undergoing real life tests to become real women. I gasped and then understood their dilemma. I told them that I would stop the photo shoot today. I looked at each one and they were very feminine looking. I asked them to bear with my crazy friends and that I would tell my friends that the women before me felt there was an infringement on their life. They came to work not to win a beauty contest. I looked around at the eight of them did not see any hint of masculinity. I assured them their secret would always be safe with me.
When the women left, I walked down to human resources and asked to talk to Fred Knowles. He and I at in his office and I put it to him bluntly. "Mr. Knowles, it is rumored we have a male to female transgendered employee working in this company. The secretaries from corporate office have taken an endeavor to find that person. Today I find out that there are at least eight males to female transsexuals working for our company." I took a deep breath and asked if there was a way to protect them from being identified. Fred Knowles told me that there were more than eight transsexuals working for the company. He said when he hired the first two they were so diligent and attuned to what they were doing he sought others like them to incorporate into the work force. He asked me if the secretaries could be called off. I told him I would need a letter from him stating that there is not one male to female employee working for our company. He knew what I was getting at and told me the letter would be up to me by mid afternoon coffee break. He looked at me and said that he knew of others who were with the company but were hired as women.
I called the secretaries together at break and told then that the Human Resources Office had sent a letter to us stating that the company does not have one male to female employee. I told them that they needed to pick a girl and award her the prize so the company can get back on track. Sue Ellen told me thanks you and the H. R. O for finally telling us. I told her that apparently the person was no longer with the company. I reminded them that it began as a rumor and it was now being squelched. Caitlin came over and hugged me, I asked what that was for she said she wanted to be sure they were real and not plastic. I assured her they were home grown and did not need plastic to be so full. Everyone laughed. Caitlin said she had heard that I was once a boy and somewhere along the line I discovered boys and became a girl to get boys. I asked her to tell whoever was feeding her that stuff certainly must be jealous I looked at her and in a stern voice I told her that those who accuse usually are guilty themselves. Pasty stood up and asked Caitlin why she was getting electrolysis. Caitlin looked at her and wanted to know how she knew. Patsy told her that her sister does her electrolysis. Caitlin sat down and began to sob. We all looked at her. Caitlin began to talk. She told how as a little boy she liked wearing his sisters dress and everyone thought it was so cute. He went on to say that in junior high he met a boy and they had sex. The boy had Caitlin dress as a girl and from then on she dressed and lived as a girl. She dated boys and then went to college and then dropped out and went to business school. Caitlin told how she paid lots of money to get her birth certificate changed so she would have been born as a girl.
I reminded everyone that they had just uncovered a persons past and that if anyone let it out they would be held liable and lose their jobs. I assured Caitlin that she was not in trouble and to go back to work and just be how she has been. The other secretaries selected a picture out of their box and announced who won the make over. Things were different for a while at work. I saw some of Caitlin's friends avoiding her. I made sure I kept her as a friend. When the others finally got over being miffed they came back and apologized to Caitlin.
The past six months were hectic, the boy/girl search and to find out that a large percentage of the company is male to female employees. I discover one of my coworkers is a male to female transsexual. Along with all of that I finished my masters in Psychology and was preparing a resume to work for a doctor so I could also get my doctorate. I had been getting very chatty with Caitlin. I had felt bad about what had happened to her and felt she needed an understanding person to befriend her and treat her as she was a female. I invited Caitlin over for dinner and a chance to just chat with her. I was busy cooking dinner when she arrived. She asked me if I had ever had a male to female transsexual make love to me. I told her no and that it would be a treat as long as she did not mind making love to another male to female transsexual.
Caitlin looked at me and smiled, she said that she would never have known. I told her that when the secretaries began to do their own little witch hunt I was doing my best to keep them from even wondering if I was a girl or a boy turned girl. I told her that when I discovered that the company was hiring transsexual because they were considered to be excellent workers and dedicated I told her I had I had come into the company with out anyone knowing I was a male to female transsexual pre-op. The Human Resources Manager had discovered when he did a back ground check. He had called me and told me that my secret was safe and no one unless they were from the C.I.A. was not going to find out.
I asked d if she thought any of the other secretaries were like us or tif they had already had the surgery and were not saying anything. She said she thought may Susan as she seemed to know what she was looking for and until she spilled the beans herself she was not sure who it was but felt quite sure the witch hunt was seeking her out and when they decided it was not one of the secretaries she felt relieved. She said when I called them together at coffee break and had the letter from HR she saw Susan looking directly at her as if she knew that the letter was just a red herring to throw everyone off. She said she was hired as a girl, all of her records form elementary school and on had her listed as a girl even her social security card and file had her as a girl. She said the looks from Susan got her to break down. She said she came from a family of money but was rejected by her father because she wanted to be a girl. She survived on her own and then her father came to visit her one day and apologized for being so mean. He offered to take care of her and put her back in the will. Caitlin said she and her father are very close now. She said she told him about Susan and how she felt so bad she outed herself because of the way Susan stared at her. She said that what I though about Susan was correct. Susan was changed into a girl at age fifteen by a wealthy grandmother who was tired of her grandsons arrogant behavior. Susan was once William and handsome boy. Caitlin said that Susan has a thing about vengeance against others who choose to become women. Susan is bitter that she will never get her grandmothers money. She is so intent on making other lives miserable her grandmother has denied her any access to the family business or properties. Caitlin says all Susan has to do is get rid of her anger and become a happy girl and she would be welcomed back.
Caitlin said she is going to do all she can to help Susan become a happy person she has invited Susan to be with her in Montreal when she goers through surgery so she can see how happy a girl is when she becomes anatomically correct. She wants Susan to share in that happiness and maybe it will be the catalyst that gets Susan on the right track.
I told Caitlin that I was scheduled for surgery in Montreal in the summer, she told me she was also scheduled, we found that we were scheduled for the same day. I said I would look forward to sharing my happiness with Susan I told her for the time being we needed to just take care of our own happiness and forget about the office hunt. When we finished dinner we found that we were ready for each other so we adjourned to the bedroom for our dessert..
