Mr. And Mrs. Claus at the Children’s Ward....         by: Lorraine B.

Part 2

It took Charlene, Gail, Audrey and myself 2 hours to pack my worldly possessions at the Roach Motel. Thank Goodness I had very few.

The five Hospital Maintenance men arrived with the truck. As they loaded they opened each box dropping in something to kill any of my Pets that might have got packed in.

Three hours later I was totally moved in at Audrey’s.

I considered my self very lucky. The Mother in Law Apartment was huge. Since it was the first time I had seen it. It was everything and more that Audrey had said. I was in Heaven!

The only thing that concerned me was tomorrow was a work day. Audrey had left all my male attire including my work uniforms at my old apartment.

Audrey, Charlene, Gail and myself had just finished a late lunch. Gail and Charlene went upstairs while Audrey and I did the dishes. I told Audrey about my work clothing and of my concerns. I told her point blank I was terrified.

We sat at the kitchen table with fresh steaming coffee. In no uncertain terms I was told not to worry. That more people know about me then I thought. The support of the hospital staff was overwhelming. Administration also gave me their full support. The Bigots were already warned that their jobs were in jeopardy if there was any trouble of any kind so were their Unions.

"Alexis, to be quite honest Admin. is scared shitless for anything to happen to you. being a TS you are protected by City Ordinances. If something were to happen they could be taken to Court in a massive lawsuit. That lawsuit would entail the hospital, Administration and other areas. The Feds might even get involved.

The Union Stewards are even supporting you and that’s a miracle by itself. They don’t usually support anyone.

One other point is that the higher ups may know about you but there are many that don’t who you are or what you are. Honey, it’s none of their damn business either!"

All I could do was to start crying. When I started Audrey stated. Klondike came over to me putting her front paws on my lap and started to lick my face. Audrey and I couldn’t help but start laughing. Who says dogs can’t sense emotion in humans? I guess I have another friend!

All went well the following day. When I woke up at 4:00am, I had two nieces, one sister, two cats, and one monster of a dog in bed with me. Thank Goodness, I had a King Size Bed!

For some reason Klondike had bonded herself to me everywhere I went she followed. That also included my bed.

Somehow I managed to extricate myself from all those partaking in my bed. I went to the Bathroom and used the commode as usual. As I started the water in the shower there were notes put all over the Bathroom.

The Kids had placed notes saying "We Love You Auntie you’re nieces: Charlene, Gail; Your Sisters: Audrey, and Abbi" I lost it again! I really started to cry. My extended family were exactly as my Blood Family, Loving and Crazy. I felt really good.

I finished my shower after throwing Klondike out of it several times. I dried off and put on my robe very careful to put on unscented deodorant and powder. I went upstairs to make coffee and fed the Moose known as Klondike.

I was again entering a maudlin mood. As I waited for the coffee to finish brewing I decided this could not happen again. I have very young patients that are relying on me to help them get well. They come first! The Hell with anyone that wants to start any Shit at the hospital. Those children are my main priority!

I went back downstairs and woke Audrey. I asked her if she had a spare uniform or I would wear a uniform dress to work.

"Didn’t I tell you! Go into your living room. You’re uniforms arrived yesterday while we were unpacking. I naturally assumed you had unpacked those also. I’m really sorry."

I went to the living room and saw a mountain of packages and boxes. I heard Audrey and the children enter the room

"We got up to see if you wanted any help, Sis"

"Audrey, what the Hell did you order. It looks to me like whole uniform supply house. Who’s going to pay for all of it?"

"Well we didn’t know what you had in the way of clothes. So the DON, Admin. and Purchasing bought these for you. The DON has relatives in the "Rag Trade" so it was given outright to you. Look, Christmas came early. So stop your bitchin’!"

As we tunneled through the mountain. I could not believe that people were actually would or could actually do something like this.

I finally managed to put a complete uniform together. The scrubs and jacket had Minnie Mouse with a Stethoscope all over them. The shoes were 2" wedge heeled Clogs made for comfort.

The girls found several Sprauge-Rappaport style stethoscopes done in Hot pink and pink. I gave two of each to Audrey for herself and Abbi.

I grabbed everything I was to wear and went to my bedroom to get ready, time was getting short for the debut of Alexis.

I already had on my makeup, bra and panties. I added a Hot Pink Scrunchie to my Pony Tail. I was ready in less then 5 minutes.

Alexis was ready to meet the world head on or was it the Children’s Ward. Nothing could or would dampen my spirits.

Audrey and I went together in her car. (Thank Goodness her parking space was assigned. New York City is Hell on trying to park a car.) As we got closer to the hospital the butterflies returned to my stomach. Audrey saw this and took my hand in hers.

We entered the hospital as usual showing our Identification cards to Security at the employee entrance. No problems there! The man at the Security desk just said Good morning ladies. If there was a problem I would have been stopped immediately. We went onto the elevator pushing the Children’s floor button and getting off when it stopped.

As soon as we arrived at the main nurses station the oncoming and offgoing staff smiled and said in unison "Good Morning Nurse Alexis."

I was accepted by my peers! All my fears dispersed. I felt ambrosial. There are no other words to describe the multitude of emotions I was feeling. There was still one more hurdle to go, the children! My consternation again increased.

As things began to quiet down around the desk. I Logged onto the computer network by using my password. When it was accepted the message was "Good Morning Alexis, We Love You!"

This time I had to maintain an air of professionalism. I had to hold back my tears of joy.

I checked my internal mail. I had close to 150 messages. I normally had 10 a day at the most. I had two messages marked urgent. Those messages I opened immediately.

One was from the DON, the other was from the Chief Administrator of the Hospital. They both wanted to see me at specified times which were in 10 minutes for the DON. My Stomach did a roll-over! I told Audrey I had to leave the floor to go to the DON for an appointment and again at 10:00 to see the Chief Administrator. She and the other floor staff must have seen the worried look on my face. It was time for a group hug and I was the recipient.

I didn’t even have time to make my rounds to great my patients. Audrey said she would cover for me until I came back.

I flew to the elevator not wanting to be late for the DON. The only time I had met her was when I was interviewed.

Ruth Rosen the DON seemed like a no nonsense person, very cold in her personality. I hoped my first impression of the lady was incorrect.

As I entered the sacred territory of the most high I was greeted by Ruth’s secretary. Ruth came out of her office and motioned me in. I felt as if I was in Nursing School again entering Sister Mary DragonLady’s office. The feeling was not a good feeling as the door was closed behind us. Panic was beginning to set in until Ruth spoke.

"Relax Hon, you look like a scared deer ready to bolt. You’re not in any trouble. This just an informal talk that I have been putting off since you arrived."

"I reports I have received from all the staff that have come in contact with you first rate. I must admit I had reservations when I was contacted by Sister Laurence. She was right you are the epitome of our profession. I am very proud of you and the job you are doing on the Children’s Floor.

I have a memo from Dr. Fishbein stating that you single handedly saved a child from possible death. Audrey stated you followed your instincts. You followed the procedures by the book which is unusual for a new nurse."

I remember that day well. The patient was 5 years old and was diagnosed with a Cardiac defect. I had just made my rounds checking the children and noticed Jessica’s skin coloring was not right after I took her Vitals.

I made a mental note to maintain a vigilance on her. For some unknown reason I decided to go back to Jessica’s room after handing my Vitals Sheet to the Floor Secretary.

As I entered I noticed a blue pallor to Jessica’s skin and lips. I started CPR immediately! I also pressed the call button to alert more staff while giving Mouth to Mouth Resuscitation. When the intercom came on all I could say was I need help.

Audrey was the first to arrive. Seeing what I was doing she called in a "Code Blue" or Cardiac Arrest.

Everything was a blur to me from that point on. Audrey and I did Two man CPR and continued until the full " Peds Crash Team" arrived.

Jessica was finally stabilized and taken to Surgery to correct her Heart problem. She survived! She was later discharged from the hospital cured of her Heart Defect after recuperation.

"It‘s a pleasure to have you on staff. By the way could you please sign these papers." Ruth said.

I looked at the paperwork. One was a Registration Certificate made out to Alexis Michael Paderevski. The rest of the paperwork was made out the same way. I was a bit astounded.

"By the way, did everything fit alright. Audrey was the one that told me your sizes. So if there was a mistake blame her." Ruth said as she organized the paperwork.

I told her all the clothes had not been removed from the packages. I was exhausted after the events of the day. I did thank her and everyone concerned.

"Dear, we always take care of one of our own. I already spoke to Audrey this morning. She told me everything, asking that I keep this meeting short. I get no respect I’m telling you, from my uppity staff. Here is your new license and a copy of the of all the rest. Let’s get you to Security for your new badge." Ruth said.

As we walked to Security Ruth was very cordial. Never once did she ask a personal question. I had the feeling that she already knew everything there was to know about me.

After I received my new identification badge pinning it on as I went back to Children’s Floor Nurses Station.

Audrey was waiting for me on my return. Mr. Steinman the Chief Administrator called to say he would see me now instead of the appointed time. There went my Stomach again, it was a Zantac moment.

The elevator trip was uneventful. As I walked down the corridor I thought to myself this was going to be another repetitious meeting.

I finally entered Hospital Admin. You could always tell by the lavishness of the offices and the surrounding area. Mr. Steinman was waiting for me. The jungle communication drums must have been beating.

I was offered a seat. Mr. Steinman was the type of man didn’t show his age(good Genes I guess.)and very soft spoken. I was correct in my assumption that the meeting was a rehash of what Ruth and spoke about. I also had the feeling he knew everything there was to know about me also. I surmised that he had some thing else on his mind. Boy! Was I right.

"Alexis, I know you just had a meeting with Ruth. I told her I wished to break the news to you in person. I would like you and Audrey to attend the Pediatric Advanced Cardiac Life Support classes starting next week. Also upon the recommendation of Dr. Fishbein and Ruth the hospital would like Abigail, Audrey and yourself to get a Masters Degree in Nursing and Administration. All classes are offered here in the hospital in conjunction with NYC Colleges." He said.

I was speechless! Something like this is just not handed to you. I have heard stories about nurses that begged to get their Masters Degree. To get the recommendations necessary they were prepare to do anything and I do mean anything.

There is an old joke that is told: How do you tell the Head Nurse in a hospital? Answer: She’s the one with the dirty knees. Well that is damn near the truth to get the recommendations necessary.

I told him I would take the ACLS course but would have to talk to Abbi and Audrey.

"I have two further items. The hospital needs an additional member to the Pediatric/Neonatal Emergency Transfer and Trauma Team. I would like you to fill that vacancy. Audrey is currently on the team."

This guy was just full of surprises. This team was on call 24/7 available to transfer any Pediatric or Neonatal Trauma Case to this hospital or any other hospital either by ambulance or helicopter. The people selected were all specialists that know their healing skills well. It was difficult to believe I was selected for this assignment being so new to my profession.

I jumped at this opportunity I was not afraid to learn or use my nursing skills.

"The last item. Because of your unique status in this hospital I would like you to see Dr. Ira Goldstein. He is expecting you today at 1:00pm for a Psych. Eval." He said.

The bomb detonated! Great a Shrink! Now to probe my inner Id. I had no choice but to see him if I wanted to succeed as a nurse. I would be there.

The meeting concluded, I went back to work on my floor. I told Audrey what was discussed. She was ecstatic to say the least. She also handed me a pager and Cell Phone that was to be with me at all times. I was so happy I could have just Shit.

The rest of the day went well I kept my appointment with the Shrink. I spent a total of 15 minutes with him.

His diagnosis was that I was Gender Dysphoric (I really do Hate that Term). A duh! No Shit Doc. He gave me a letter that stated the diagnosis and that I was under his care. He said it was to protect me until I had my SRS. I never had one before but this was New York City.

Audrey and I finished the day with no more problems.

We finished the Peds ACLS Course with flying colors. We also decided to get our Masters Degree as per Admin. request.

Everyday was basically the same until Halloween. We had just arrived at the hospital when my pager went off. It scared the living shit out of me. I called the ER to get the information and was told to get to the ambulance bay Stat. When the term Stat is used it means life or possible death. I grabbed my Trauma and Surgical Kits and ran.

That morning Audrey and I had put on the World War II U.S. Navy Nurse Corps uniforms as we had planned. Now I was running down the halls wearing a white uniform dress with rank insignia of a Lieutenant Junior Grade, White 2" heels and Stockings, Blue Cape, and Nurses Duty Hat with rank piping. I could imagine what was going through the minds of people that saw me.

I arrived at the ambulance and got in. The physician was already onboard. What a hunk! He was absolutely gorgeous! I was ready to drop my panties right then and there! I had seen him around the hospital many times but didn’t really pay much attention to him.

He motioned me to take the Jump Seat and helped me to strap in. My heart and pulse just kept on racing. I was close to orgasm.

He finally spoke. "Hi, I’m Isadore Stein just call me Izzy. We’re heading to about 10 blocks from here. We have 5 year old child hit by a car. Injuries are unknown."

We arrived in less then 10 minutes. It was a land speed record considering New York City traffic.

We stopped and the loading doors were opened by a Fire Fighter. They had just extricated the boy from Beneath the vehicle that hit him. The Paramedic on scene could not find any Vitals. The injuries were very extensive including a crushed cranium.

Izzy had no choice but to call the Time of Death. The Coroner’s office was notified. We had to remain until they arrived. I totally lost control of my emotions.

I ran back to the "Rig" with tears flowing. I could not for the life of me understand why that child had died. I knew that the injuries were extensive. But why couldn’t God or that higher entity let him live. He was innocent! His life was just beginning. Where was the justice? Where in the Hell were the parents to protect him?

As I cried Izzy came through the doors. He came to me without saying a word, enveloping me in his arms. I buried my head into his shoulder continuing to cry.

Izzy released his hold of me lifting my head to look him in the eyes say, "Alexis, I don’t think that boy know what hit him. At least he didn’t have to suffer or be a vegetable for his entire life."

I hadn’t thought of the other consequences that the young child might have had. Izzy was right I apologized to him for my actions.

He put his finger to my lips to silence me saying, "Just because we are in a healing profession it does not mean we are not human. When death comes to a patient many of us show our emotions. Some of us cry, some of us show anger and some of us bottle it in ourselves until we explode emotionally. Honey, just let it flow out."

I felt better after he talked with me. In nursing school we had courses in Death and Dying. I guess we or shall I say I thought I would never come into contact with death. My mortality was awakened, I was not invulnerable. I as well as all human beings would eventually face the Grim Reaper.

I began to feel emotionally better. I gave him a kiss on the cheek and thanked him for his concern. He smiled at me also.

When the coroner arrived we were released to go back to the hospital. The EMT and Paramedic said they would do and file the necessary reports for us. We thanked them by stopping for coffee and breakfast on the way back to the hospital.

I called Audrey on my Cell Phone to let her know what happened and where we were. She understood and told me to take my time getting back. I decided not to tell her about Izzy until I got back to the floor.

The Restaurant/Deli reminded me of the many neighborhood restaurants found in the city. Some may be dark and have a slightly worn appearance but, these were the ones that had the best food. That was definitely this place.

Our EMT and Paramedic must have lived in this place. The owner a man in his mid seventies came from the kitchen calling them both by their first names. He took our orders and left to prepare them.

I must have been partially in shock as I didn’t realize that Izzy was holding my hand. I don’t even recall him taking it. The one thing that I do know is the Ambulance Crew saw and smiled at us without comment.

I couldn’t help but wonder if Isadore felt an attraction to me as I felt for him. I surely hope so.

We finished eating and left the restaurant arriving at the hospital. All the way Isadore held my hand. I kissed him again on the cheek. I thanked him for his kindness and understanding. Damn, he didn’t ask for my phone number and I forgot to give it to him.

I turned in the Trauma And Surgical Kits floating all the way to my assigned floor.

Audrey at first thought I might be still suffering the effects of the boys death. Then she realized I had a different type of look in my eye. I think it was more predatory, maybe even lustful.

"Alexis, snap out of it! Are you okay? Do you want to talk about it before the party for the kids." Audrey said.

The complete floor staff was at the nurses station, all stopped what they were doing to stare at me.

I just shook my head saying "No, I’ll be alright. I just have to sort some things out. I’ll tell you later."

Audrey looked at me and kept staring so did everyone else.

"Audrey, I swear I’ll tell you later."

"When later! In six months!" she said.

"I promise on the way home. Okay!" I said.

"Okay." She said.

We had the party for the kids. We tried to make sure that they forgot they were in a hospital.

All of the ambulatory kids were taken to other floors and departments by the CNA’s and Candy Stripers for Trick or Treating. They loved it! It was the next best thing to being at home.

Many of the parents and Docs got involved in the games we set up. Prizes were donated by many businesses and organizations for the kids, they were all winners. Even hospital Administration participated in the festivities!

No matter what medical problem those children had, there was a smile on their face and a joy in their little hearts.

The day finally ended for our shift. It had started out sad but at the end the kids lifted my spirits.

We arrived home at our usual time. Audrey and I couldn’t wait to get out of those nurses uniforms. As soon as we opened the door the moose, Klondike ran out. Thank God we stepped to the side of the door in time. I had learned the hard way about the daily rituals, after being knocked on my ass a few times.

Audrey saw the blinking message light on the answering machine and played back the messages. I had three one from Mom, one from Irene and one from Isadore.

Audrey then gave me the info on him as we prepared supper. He was a widower with two little girls ages 5 and 7 years old. His wife died from Cervical Cancer three years ago. The girls are taken care of by a nanny and housekeeper.

I had told Audrey earlier in the car what had happened to me. I also told her about Isadore. She said that every female in the hospital had tried to land him and didn’t succeed.

Audrey thought that that he was genuinely interested in me, I would be the envy of all the females at the hospital.

I told Audrey that Mom, Irene and Katherine wanted all of us to come to Chicago for Thanksgiving. That was what they were calling about.

I grabbed a cold Pepsi from the refrigerator and kicked off my heels. I still haven’t decided if I was going to call Izzy.

I asked Audrey, "Sis, what do you think I should do?"

"With what? Izzy or the rest of the family!" She said.

"All of the above." I said

"Well first of all you and I will be working on Thanksgiving and Easter. That’s so we are off Christmas and New Years Day. So going to Mom’s is out. But, we can all go to Chicago for Christmas the kids would love it. We could even surprise everyone.

I telephoned Mom after I took a shower and put on my Bra and Panties, long comfy lounger with 2" black mules. Now I could face the world.

Katherine answered the telephone, "Hey Lil’ Sis, you received the message I guess. We’re helping Mom with the candy tonight. How’s everything in New York?"

I told her about everything that happened during the day. I was glad to hear from her and I missed everyone. I also told her to tell Mom and Irene we had to work for Thanksgiving and up until Sunday. I didn’t say anything about Christmas and New Years. I was going to ask Abbi and Audrey to take a few vacation days off in between the two holidays.

"Sis, Moms going to be disappointed. Irene and I will explain. Isadore sounds like a dream if you don’t want him send him to me or Irene. Is our other Sis there? If she is put her on. We Love you and call more often. Moms really getting angry about not hearing from her baby girl." Katherine said.

I handed the telephone receiver to Audrey telling her that it was our other sister Katherine. She stated speaking to Katherine while I started making dinner.

Audrey’s voice was almost a whisper talking to Katherine. I couldn’t hear any of the conversation. What ever they were speaking about I had a bad feeling they threw me into the center of it.

Growing up I guess I was considered the quiet child of the family. Katherine and Irene were the practical jokers. They did everything from greasing the toilet seat to Saran wrapping the commode. I was the one who got the greased toilet seat but, Mom got the Saran Wrap. I never saw her so literally Pissed. Irene and Katherine were Grounded for a month for that stunt.

Audrey hung up the telephone.

"What were you two scheming about?" I asked.

"Oh nothing that concerns you Sis. Kathy asked questions about Izzy. I told her what I knew." Audrey said smiling.

I knew she wasn’t quite telling the truth. When she tells a fib you can see the wrinkles deepen in the corners of her eyes. Wow! Were they deep, I better go get the hip boots out.

"Honey, let me finish dinner while you call Izzy. He’s probably waiting for your call. Do it before Gail gets home or you won’t be able to use the telephone at all." Audrey said.

I forgot all about Gail and Charlene. That phone is in constant use with them. We’ve threatened to attach a Fire Extinguisher to the phone. those phone lines are always burning with their gossip.

I dialed the number that Izzy had left. He answered immediately.

"Hello Isadore, I’m returning your call." I said.

"Hi Alexis, I’m so glad you called. I had a great time with the kids on the floor. I wanted to thank Audrey and yourself for inviting me and the rest of the Docs." He said.

Two and two fell into place and it total Audrey!

"You’re welcome and were happy you had a good time."

"I don’t know how to say this it’s been a long time. Would you like to go to Dinner and the Symphony Saturday night with me."

"Izzy, I would love to go with you."

"Good I’ll pick you up at 6:00pm. Thank you and I will see you tomorrow."

"Wait a minute don’t hang up, please."

I laid the telephone down and told Audrey. You’d of thought she won the lottery. She was so excited. I asked if she would mind if his daughters could stay the night with Gail and Charlene. I would pay the girls to baby-sit. It was Okay with her.

"Izzy, I know you have two daughters. Why don’t you give your hired help the evening off. My adopted nieces would love to baby-sit them over here."

"I don’t know they can be a handful. I’m sure they’ll be alright. Audrey will be right here in the house."

"In that case they’ll be there."

"Iz, instead of 6:00, be here at 5:30 with them and please pack a overnight case for them."

"I’ll have nanny do it now. I’ll see you tomorrow. "He said.

Audrey was all smiles as I set the table. She didn’t say a word. When I was on the telephone, Abbi and the girls had returned. Audrey told the girls about baby-sitting. The girls couldn’t wait.

Myself on the other hand had so much to do I felt overwhelmed. I decided to go to bed early, of course Klondike joined me. She doesn’t take a small section of the King Size bed she takes the whole bed. Klondike is so possessive she growls if you move on the bed. I think Audrey lost Klondike the Moose to me.

Thank you Lord, for Audrey, Abbi, Charlene and Gail. If it wasn’t for them my day would have been disastrous. I put them through so much crap. I felt sorry for them buying them lunch at our favorite Deli.

I had my hair, nails and a pedicure done. We went looking for and found a black formal evening dress with black and silver bugle beading. It had a high mandarin collar with a cleavage cut out, long wide flowing sleeves, and was knee length. The shoes were strappy silver sandals with a 3" stiletto heel. I couldn’t find the right clutch purse. Audrey had one and loaned it to me.

The next stop was Lingerie. I was talked into a Black Satin Laced Corset with matching Hi-Cut Panties and Sheer Black Opera Hose. We also found a pair satin gloves and wrap.

By the time I had bathed and was dressed for my date. I think I called my adopted sisters every swear name in the book of foul language. I asked them if they participated in the Spanish Inquisition. They really seemed like they loved to see me tortured with that Corset. I could see the smiles on their faces.

When I was fully ready I looked great! I was ready to take on the world or least New York City.

Izzy finally came with his daughters. They were so cute! Mariah was 7 and Rebecca was 5. They were immediately at home.

As we were leaving they both started crying. Since I was off the next day I promised to take them shopping and do lunch. Of course everyone else wanted to go also. I was trapped again by family!

The evening was grand! Izzy had hired a limousine for the evening. The Dinner and Symphony was tremendous. We took a ride in a Handsome Cab around and through Central Park. Overall the evening was a blur of happiness.

Izzy was a gentleman! He was attentive, tender, and loving. He is a devoted father and was a devoted husband to his deceased wife.

We both seemed to have a great deal in common. Was this the man of my dreams? Maybe he is.

All I can say is we returned back to my apartment. Originally the plan was to retrieve the kids. Things got a little carried away. The show of mutual affection that started in the Limo, carried further in my living room and later into my bed.

While laying in my bed, Izzy confessed to me he fell in love with me the moment he saw me on the Children’s Floor. He was too bashful to ask me out.

His opportunity came when we were on the ambulance together. He saw I was a real person and conscientious to the feelings and needs of other people. He saw I really did love children. He didn’t care about my not having SRS yet!

It was a done deal. He was in love! Emotion won over logic. His logic told him it was definitely LOVE.

I didn’t know what to say. So I passionately kissed him because I loved him also.

As the weeks rolled by Izzy and the Children became more of my life. Abbi, Audrey, Charlene and Gail thought it was great. We were just like one big happy family, all the animals included.

As the first of the seasonal holidays, Thanksgiving approached. There was something in the air and it wasn’t Klondike’s gas (Thank Goodness!).

I happened to mentioned this in passing to Audrey,

the week before on the way home. I was told I was imagining it. I just couldn’t put my finger on it. Izzy told me the same thing.

There were conversations taking place when suddenly everyone would stop talking whenever I entered a room. This had gone on since Halloween.

The week before Thanksgiving on Thursday, Audrey and I were off duty. I had spent the night alone except for my bed companion as usual Klondike. I awoke at 8:00am and let Klondike outside in the backyard.

The house was quiet. The kids were still in school. I thought Audrey was still in bed. Was I wrong!

The coffee was prepared and I found a note from Audrey saying she went shopping at the grocery store. I grabbed a cup of coffee and started reading the newspaper.

Klondike started howling in the backyard. (Alaskan Malamute’s as a breed are normally mistaken for a wolf by their looks and howl.) She was going crazy!

I stuck my head outside to quiet her. I saw my Mother, Irene, and Katherine through the garage windows getting out of Audrey’s car.

I couldn’t believe it was them. I was right! They were up to something. I loved them all the more for this surprise.

I called Klondike into the house. She came instantly. Audrey said she never responded to her or Gail like she does for me. We all take care of the animals in the house.

I sat back down at the table. I didn’t want to spoil their surprise.

Audrey entered the house first saying, "What the Hell are you doing up?"

"Klondike woke me up to do her business. Why?"

"Honey, all of us kind of went behind your back. I hope you won’t be angry. All of us love you so much we wanted to plan a surprise and I guess we did.

"Sis, what in the Hell are you babbling about!"

"C’mon in everyone!"

First Izzy walked in carrying luggage. Then my mother and sisters. I got up and tried to act surprised. Mom already knew I knew they were here by the look on my face.

"Darling, you never could lie straight. I saw it in your face you knew, we were here.

"Mom, don’t blame me blame Klondike. When she was raising Hell outside I saw you getting out of Audrey’s car."

Everyone rushed me at one time. I was sandwiched in between them all. Being kissed and hugged by everyone. Even Klondike got crushed in the rush.

Mom is 5’7" tall without her heels. The moose stood on her back paws and placed her front paws on mom’s shoulders to lick her face.

"Well I guess I’ve been accepted."

"Mom, she’s a big baby. She likes a lot of love and believe me we have to give it to her."

Izzy came back into the kitchen and kissed me. I couldn’t believe he did that. I blushed profusely.

"Sweetheart, not in front of mom." I said almost whispering.

"Darling, your mother and sisters; all of them know about us. So what’s the problem?"

"Wait just a minute! Do you mean to tell me that you’re the one responsible for this surprise."

"Honey, I was only one of the responsible parties. Please don’t be angry. I love you too much for you to be mad at me."

I kissed him and Audrey for their generosity and kindness. Then I kissed Izzy again.

"I love you too. We’ll talk about this scam later."

Audrey took Mom, Irene and Katherine upstairs to their rooms. Of course Klondike followed Mom. That dog is going to be spoiled!

Audrey was going to show them around the house after they got settled and refreshed.

I took Izzy downstairs with me. I wanted to show him my appreciation and make love to him.

After we made mad passionate love we took a shower together. I guessed we got carried away in the shower. We made love again.

We both got dressed. I decided to wear red stretch pants, red cable knit sweater, knee highs and red ballerina flats. Oh Yeah! Bra and Panties too! (With Izzy around they didn’t stay on long.)

Izzy helped me to make the bed and clean the bedroom. We went from room to room to make sure all was ready to bring my family down to my apartment. Needless to say with Izzy there it was difficult to keep my mind on what I was doing.

By the time Mom, Irene, and Katherine had been all through the house it was past noon.

Izzy suggested we go out to lunch at our favorite Deli. I suggested we place our order and eat at home. Because of the large order they delivered it.

As we eat we talked about everything. Mom kept looking at Izzy and me for some reason . When I disclosed he was a Pediatric Attending Physician Irene and Katherine’s jaws seem to drop in astonishment. Mom seemed to relax more.

Audrey must have seen the reaction also. She quickly changed the subject. We continued to talk losing total track of time.

Suddenly the back door flew open and slammed shut. Hurricane Gail and Charlene blew in. Both yelled in unison, "Is Grandma here? Where’s Grandma?" as they dropped their backpacks with a thunderous thud in the kitchen.

They ran into the living room. When they saw Mom they ran to her kissing and hugging her. Then they switched over to Irene and Katherine doing the same to them.

I glanced at Audrey, Mom, Irene and Katherine. They all had tears in their eyes. Mom finally had Granddaughters to spoil!

Izzy had to leave to pick up Mariah and Rebecca from school. Mom practically forced me out of the house with Izzy. Izzy didn’t help matters by dragging me out the door.

We arrived at the school. I went in and retrieved the children. Mrs. Julie Rosenblatt their teacher saw me waving hello she walked over.

"Hi, Mrs. Stein your daughters are getting their coats. How is Doctor Stein?"

Mrs. Stein? Normally it’s Alexis. What in the Hell gives. I apologized for my appearance explaining that family had just arrived in town. I just didn’t have time to change into a dress or skirt.

The school was run by Temple Shalom Synagogue. Rabbi Lutsky and the Temple Board made it quite clear that women are to wear skirts and dresses on Temple property. I and many other women didn’t agree with the archaic rules but I did not want to cause trouble for Mariah and Rebecca.

Julie and I were having a pleasant conversation when Mariah and Rebecca came running from the cloak room. I squatted down and gave each of them a hug and a kiss. Mariah was the first to speak, "Mommy are we going to see Grandma now at Auntie Audrey’s house?"

Mommy? Grandma? What is there that I’m not comprehending?

"Yes Darling, Grandma, Auntie Irene, and Auntie Katherine are waiting for you."

"Okay Mommy, can we go please?"

I said goodbye to Mrs. Rosenblatt and left with two very wired girls and a very confused adult, myself.

Izzy and I fastened the girls into their seat belts after he kissed them both. Izzy is very astute to my moods. He could tell something had hit me with a sledgehammer.

In a short time we arrived at Audrey’s house. Mariah and Rebecca unfasten and bolted from the car as soon as the engine was turned off. We weren’t far behind them. I caught both the girls at the porch.

"Mariah, Rebecca!" I said sternly, "Young ladies do not run. You will watch your manners. Now be good everyone is waiting for you. I love you both very much."

"We love you too, Mommy"

They both gave me another kiss before entering the door.

As I was speaking to the children Izzy didn’t say a word. I could see he approved of the way I had handled his daughters and the love I had for them. He also saw the perplexed look I had on my face when the girls called me Mommy.

Izzy took me into his arms and kissed me.

As he stared into my eyes, holding me close to him he said, "Alexis, I saw your look of confusion when the girls called you Mommy. You are a part of our lives now. We love you very deeply. I know it been just a few weeks since we met. Perhaps we are going too fast into our relationship. But life is too short sometimes you have to take risks. We want you as a part of our lives forever."

All I could do was kiss him with all the love I had in my soul. I belonged to him and the girls and they belonged to me.

During the week Mom, Irene, and Katherine were in town it was hectic. Audrey, Abbi, Izzy and myself took them sightseeing and of course souvenir hunting.

They even spent a day at the hospital with us. They loved it! Mom, Irene, and Katherine made many new and lasting friends from both staff and patients.

Audrey , Abbi, Irene, and Katherine met four Doctors through Izzy that they liked. Will wonders ever cease! Of course Izzy and I babysat. I was in heaven having the kids and him near me.

Mom even had a Date Dr. David Horowitz (OhmyGod! Did I just say the D word for Mom.) the Chief of Staff who was a widower.

Audrey and I had to work on Thanksgiving Day. We didn’t mind.

The hospital census was down for the holiday. Our floor was in a festive mood. We tried to cheer up what children we had to care for. It was very difficult for them and for us.

The ambulatory children watched all the parades and children shows on television. They were the easy ones to care for.

Besides giving care, we read many stories to the non-ambulatory children. These were the children that broke my heart. If I was granted just one wish it would be that children would never be sick or injured anywhere.

Audrey and I made it home just in time to see Mom smack Abbi with a wooded cooking spoon on her ass. Audrey lost it! She laughed so hard she almost peed in her panties. "Mom, What did Abbi do?" Audrey asked.

"She’s been absolutely obnoxious. She wanted to make the Blintzes for me. She made them too thick and wouldn’t listen how to make them. So I took the spoon to her. Between all of you girls, Klondike, the cats and ferrets it has been an active day."

"Mom, our mother and grandma used to do the same thing to her. It brought back pleasant memories. Besides that don’t tell her, but she can’t cook worth a damn. Why do you think Charlene and her are here all the time. Did you say Ferrets?"

"Honey, BigFoot got loose when the kids were playing with him. We almost had another entrée’ called roasted BigFoot. He was in the oven as it was warming."

Mom kissed her and gave her a hug. We were both told to get ready for our Family Meal. There would be additional guests coming and to dress properly.

I looked in the oven. Mom prepared four turkeys. They looked to weigh about twenty or more pounds apiece.

"Mom, who are we feeding, the whole Macy’s parade."

"No Dear, I told you we have guest coming. Now both of you Scoot."

One thing I won’t do is argue with Mom when she’s holding a wooden spoon.

I ran Downstairs, Audrey ran Upstairs. Klondike stayed with Mom waiting for a handout.

You could tell Mom was in Charge. Never Cross a Pissed Off Mother in her kitchen! Especially with a wooden spoon!

I just got out of the shower. I put on my panties and a robe. There was a little knock on my bathroom door.

"Come in."

It was Mariah.

"How was my little girl today?"

I got on my knees to take her in my arms. I gave her a big hug and kiss.

"Grandma said not to disturb you, but I wanted to see you. Mommy, I love you!"

My heart melted! How can you tell a child to mind their elders when they say those three words. She looked so sweet and innocent in her pink party dress, Pink tights and Black Patent Mary Jane’s. She was the typical little girl.

"Darling, I love you too! But you disobeyed Grandma. Now how am I going to punish you?"

"I dunno." Saying those words with an apologetic look on her face.

"I know! I’m going to tickle you until you smile."

That’s exactly what I did. I tickled and kissed her making her laugh and giggle as all children should.

I guess we made a great deal of noise in our Tickle Fest on my bed. Klondike came charging through the bedroom door howling. She landed on top of me knocking me to the floor. I played with Klondike and Mariah joined in. We all had a good time laughing and giggling.

I think I was more disappointed then Mariah; when we had to stop. Mom called over the intercom telling me to hurry up.

As I took off my robe Mariah’s eyes opened very wide and pointed to my breasts, "Mommy, will I have those too? What are they for?"

Uh Oh! No one ever explained "The Birds and The Bees" to her. Oh Shit! I thought, why me!

As I got dressed I told her everything as a mother and daughter should. The Bond between us grew even tighter. In a few years I would probably be giving Rebecca the same talk. I’ll tell Izzy later about the results.

I did my hair in a French Braid along with Mariah’s hair. When I did my nails and makeup I did Mariah’s. she wanted to look like Mommy; What can I say. Her makeup was more subdued with light blush and light red lipstick.

I called Mom on the intercom and asked that Rebecca be sent down to me.

I don’t know which of the kids is faster. Rebecca was like a Comet. She flew into my arms, showing great amounts of love and affection. She settled down and saw Mariah saying, "Mommy, will you do my hair and nails too."

Well Mommy Alexis did get her daughters ready.

They were both perfect angels. I was so proud of them!

I was sorry that their biological mother was deceased. I always prayed for her and thanked her for giving these two precious children life. I made a vow that I would always be there for them. In every possible way I could!

Mom and Audrey saw us come upstairs together. They both smiled not saying a word. Now I knew what a mother’s bond to her child was.

Whether I liked it or not; Biological female or not; Biological children or not, I was their Mommy. I will cherish them every minute and moment of my life.

Mom had decided for the amount of people to be fed it was to be Buffet Style. Since we had two surgeons and a Chief of Staff in the house we had them carve the Turkeys.

The children were fed first and settled. The meal reminded me of a swarm of Locust. I have never seen my sisters and their dates so hungry. Of course Klondike was underfoot acting as a Vacuum cleaner.

Izzy still hadn’t arrived. I was beginning to worry.

"Has Izzy called?" I asked to no one in particular.

"I forgot to tell you he was stuck on the parkway in traffic." Mom said.

"I’ll wait for him to get here before I eat."

"Sis, don’t worry he’ll be here soon. Please eat now." Irene said.

"If you don’t eat I’ll force feed you, Sis." Abbi said.

Somehow I knew she would too!

When Izzy walked in a few minutes later. I screamed and ran to him. He was covered in blood.

"Sweetheart. I’m Okay. I rendered assistance to a birth on the Parkway. That’s why I’m so late."

I told him to get downstairs and get cleaned up. I refused to touch him until he was clean. I told him I picked up his suit at the cleaners and he had fresh undies and shirts in his drawer. It was so cute when he blushed!

Everyone except the children had knowing looks on their faces. I didn’t care what anyone thought. I love him!

Besides him and the children spend more time here with us then at their apartment overlooking Central Park.

Izzy arrived clean, fresh clothes and even shaved.(He normally complains about my Pink Razors.)

I told the girls to eat and let Daddy eat before jumping him. Charlene and Gail just looked at me with smiles. My God! They listened again. I must really be getting into Mother Mode. I just shook my finger at them and smiled. All the kids giggled. So did Mom.

After we ate, the Children and my Sisters did the kitchen cleanup and the dishes. They threw Mom and me out. Now what the Hell is going on?

All the men were talking shop when we entered. They suddenly stopped as Mom and I sat down on the couch.

Izzy came over to me and Mom taking our hands into his. He got down on his right knee.

"Mrs. Paderevski, I mean Mom. I know that I’m a Jew

and you’re Gentiles, Maybe the Rabbi will care but I don’t. I and my children Love your daughter. I’m asking for her hand in marriage. We wish to spend the rest of our lives with her. She is someone very special in many ways."

I was crying so hard it brought everyone out of the kitchen.

"Please Mommy don’t cry, we love you" Mariah said loudly.

At that point even the men were sniffling. All my sisters, Charlene and Gail went to them and grabbed their arms. Dr. Horowitz went to Mom’s side and took her other hand and placed his other arm around her shoulders tightly.

I bent my body leaning over and kissed Izzy. We both stood up and kissed as a couple deeply in love.

"My god! Does that mean yes?" he said catching his breath sliding an engagement ring on my finger. I stared at the ring nodding yes.

All I could do was hold him and the girls. Of course Klondike was going crazy. She even had to kiss everyone.

Everyone of my sisters and nieces kissed me and kissed Izzy. The men hugged and shook Izzy’s hand. Then they turned on me. David even kissed me! At least this time I knew I wasn’t going to get into trouble for being kissed by the Chief of Staff.

As 8:00 o’clock approached the celebration was still in full swing.

I asked Mom to help me get Rebecca for bed. She told me to stay with Izzy and Mariah. Grandma would handle it.

David, decided willingly to help her. All of our devious little minds were working giving her a barely perceptible smile. All she did was smile broadly.

The poor man, he was hooked like a fish by our Mother.

She deserved someone in her life other then us.

I could see Izzy was about to make a comment. I gently touched his leg to get attention. OhmyGod! I gave him my Mother’s look. He froze not saying a word. He leaned over and gave me a kiss and held my hand.

Mom finally came back with David. She never looked happier. We were very happy for her.

"did Rebecca give you any problems? Is she upstairs in Gail’s bed as usual?"

Oh No and Yes she is. David read a story to her and she’s fast asleep. He has the grandfather’s Charm."

I looked at them again. They both had that "look" for each other. Later all of us sisters said we noticed it as we discussed the two of them. We decided not to mention it to Mom. She would deny it of course.

At 9:30 my sisters ask if Izzy and I would baby-sit Charlene and Gail. Mom and my sisters had been asked to go dancing. How could we refuse!

All of us including Izzy straightened and cleaned up for Audrey. Of course we had our vacuum Klondike, following until I let her in the backyard.

When Klondike came in she went directly downstairs.

I told Izzy," I think the dog is trying to tell us something. Now what are you going to do. You have me and Klondike and I have you and two gorgeous daughters."

All he did was kiss me, turn off the lights and took me downstairs.

In the morning I woke up in Izzy’s arms with Klondike trying to let me know she had to go outside. I guess it was going to be one of those days.

I went back to bed kissing Izzy’s after letting the moose out. After I knew he was awake I took my shower. It didn’t take long before Izzy was with me.

That man could rock my world! We made Love twice in the shower and once in the bedroom. He wanted to do the Nasty again until I saw the clock. If I didn’t hurry I would be late for work and so would he. He was insatiable when it came to sex and I loved it.

The coffee was already made. I thought Audrey made it until I remembered that Izzy talked Audrey into automating the house via computer. What a pain in the ass!

There was no response when I knocked on Audrey’s room. I looked in, she didn’t even come home last night.

I woke Gail and told her to baby-sit today.

I told Izzy what I found he just laughed. I trusted Charlene and Gail with Mariah and Rebecca and so did Izzy.

As Izzy and I checked in at Hospital Security our Pagers went off. We ran down the corridors he was still holding my hand as we entered the ER. I grabbed the Trauma and Surgical kit and ran to the Ambulance Bay. Izzy pulled me into the Rig and we were off flying down the roadways with two other of the based Rigs.

Izzy told us we were going to a vehicle accident with multiple traumas. One was a 5 year old girl with a possible fractured sternum and internal bleeding.

The Cardio/Vascular Surgeon said the EKG Strip from the BioComm showed Sinus Rhythm. That was a good sign and possibly just bruising. Izzy agreed with the diagnosis.

Our patients were extricated just as we arrived on the scene. Our little patient was alert and coherent which was excellent. Her name was Tina she said. Tina was more scared then hurt but had to be watched and closely monitored.

A Paramedic from the Fire/Rescue Company was calling for help on a Cardiac Arrest. I told Izzy and Vera our Paramedic to go. I would watch our little patient.

Everything was fine until Jake our EMT and I loaded our patient for transport. The Monitor suddenly Flat Lined.

And she was Cyanotic.

We started to bag her and administer CPR. She finally responded after three sets of compressions. Little Tina was stable again just as Izzy came back inside the Rig. Izzy checked her again after I told him what had happened.

Jake and Vera told a police officer what just occurred and requested front and rear escorts to the hospital. All of them volunteered. We had five Beat cars with others blocking street intersections for us.

Most Cops are hardened by the street crud they deal with on a daily basis. When a child needs help their hearts seem to soften.

We were back at B.I.ER, in record time with our little patient.

I found out later both her parents were admitted with minor injuries. Tina did fine. She was later admitted to our floor.

It was a steady flow of Firefighters, EMT’s, Paramedics and Police Officers that came to see Tina over the few weeks in our care. They never came empty handed. All the children benefited from her visits. Tina was a child that loved to give as well as receive.

When I finally reported to the floor. I saw Audrey and Abbi talking. They both had that special look to their faces. I just smiled and did my Ambulance Report. They both knew that I knew what they did last night. I should talk! I did the same thing and Honey, it was HEA-VEN-LY. I was happy for them.

All of us rode back home with Izzy. I needled Audrey and Abbi so bad they wanted to strangle me. Izzy knew he better keep his mouth shut and he did. We dropped them off at home telling them we had an errand to do.

Izzy took me to the nearest Ice Cream Shop. I bought several gallons of Ice Cream one being Pistachio as a peace offering.

By the time we got home the children had eaten. They were upstairs playing with BigFoot and family. Mom was back

as were all her daughters. This time we all picked on poor Izzy during dinner. Even Klondike hid!

All was forgiven and forgotten when the Ice Cream was served. All women are essentially simplistic creatures give us Chocolate and Ice Cream and we’ll retract our claws and fangs.

Again I got thrown out of the kitchen by my own family. I went upstairs to see the kids hoping that they wouldn’t throw me out too.

I knocked and opened the door. I never knew Ferrets could move so fast! Six FurBalls ran out of the room going in every direction possible along with four girls following. Me! I wound up flat on my ass. I just sat where I fell and started crying for no apparent reason.

Izzy was the first up the staircase, followed by Audrey, Abbi and Mom.

The girls and my sisters managed to get all the FurBalls put back into their hutch. They didn’t have a chance.

Izzy and Mom tried to see if I was hurt. I wasn’t, except for my pride.

We all went down to the living room. Everyone started laughing including me.

I didn’t know that if the door was closed the FurBalls were out of their cage. If I had known they wouldn’t have gotten loose. I felt the least intelligent of the human race.

This had been one Hell of crazy day!

Mom, Irene and Katherine went back to Chicago after the holiday. At JFK Airport, I made round trip, first class reservations; to Chicago and return for all of us. I made hotel reservations at the Embassy Suites for us.

The Vet’s were another matter. I found one near to the house that would take the ferrets and cats but no one would take poor Klondike. I hope she doesn’t get airsick!

I’m gonna get killed! Mom, Irene and Katherine don’t know we’re coming especially with Klondike

December was a good month. The house was back normal. Everyone had their schedules and chores to do. Audrey saw to it that there was no deviation from those schedules.

Audrey and Abbi had been dating the same two Doctors since November. Ya know that song; I feel Romance in the Air…..

After having many discussions I convinced Izzy, Mariah and Rebecca to move in with us or shall I say with me. So far it is a good arrangement.

Any woman that says the more kids the merrier hadn’t checked her head lately for gray hairs or uses L’Oreal Color in a bottle.

One week before leaving Mariah fell down the stairs. Yes, Mommy went into a panic for her baby. I thought the worst, possible concussion and broken ankle.

As I waited in the ER I thought we’re not going to see Mom this Christmas, maybe next year. Our baby comes first!

Mariah fooled us! It was a mild sprain and no concussion. She has a Thick Skull like her Father. Did I just say that!

We had to get all the animals to the Vet after work. I already packed our clothes so I volunteered to take the zoo. I placed two animal carryalls on the floor of our mini van strapping them down.

I should have known better then to volunteer for this assignment by myself. BigFoot is the Harry Houdini of the Ferret world. I think he has a set of Ferret LockPicks hidden in the cage

As I was driving I felt something attacking the rubber on the gas pedal viciously, Guess who? BigFoot’s cagemate Mavis, was running across the dashboard. Thank God, the others were in the back, Somewhere.

I had to pull over try to pick him up without him becoming a phlebotomist and drawing my blood. He was a pain to get into the cage.

Mavis, was very gentle and loving. She came directly to me with the help of a Twizzler (Red Licorice) bit.

Because of that Red Licorice I was back on the road and the Houdini Family was in their cage. I wonder if I could do that with Klondike! Mmmm, Maybe if I had a case of Twizzlers!

F as Flight Day finally arrived! Izzy made arrangements for transportation to JFK. The Limos arrived an hour early. We had two Limos and a sedan for luggage overflow (we were loaded). When one of the drivers saw Klondike I think he Shit in his pants. He absolutely refused to drive the Limo with the moose. So the drivers switched vehicles. All was finally going our way.

HaHa, that was a joke! The airline didn’t have a kennel big enough for Klondike. The call went out to all the airlines. They finally found one. It took the four of us, six baggage handlers and twelve hotdogs to get her in. She Howled and flatuated all the way to the plane.

The Check in Procedure was relatively painless. Our wallets ached because of the additional weight of the Gifts.

The biggest pain was Airport Security. Izzy was carrying a medical kit bag. They got upset and refused to allow him to board with his bag because it contained an emergency surgical kit. The Police were even called along with a Security supervisor. It was explained he wasn’t a terrorist but a Doctor trained to save lives.

The Airline would allow the kit to go if it flew in the Cockpit with the Pilots and it was locked. We barely made our Flight.

Ah! Chicago the city of my birth! As we approached O’Hare Airport the plane flew over Downtown. You could see Sears Tower and the Hancock Building. The Kids loved it and so did the adults.

We landed! I couldn’t believe how busy the airport was. The Limo Service was waiting for us. The Sky Caps loved us! They made their tips for a week.

Klondike went crazy when she heard our voices at the freight terminal. So did the Limo drivers when they saw her.

Somewhere there is some implanted information in Klondike’s head that says there’s Alexis its time to knock her on her ass. As soon as she was let out of her Kennel she was up on my shoulders and I was down on the floor.

The hotel was another matter. They lost our reservations. We lost our suites! They did find us Suites at the Downtown location. They found three adjoining Suites for us. Izzy was apprehensive at first but I talked him into it. There is nothing like Chicago Shopping! Hello Magnificent Mile!

The Downtown location even took Klondike as long as someone watched her. The moose was a big hit with the hotel staff. She must have gained 10 pounds from the treats and leftovers. They loved her!

We finally settled into our rooms. The kids got the Middle Suite, Audrey and Abbi took an adjoining like Izzy and I did. Oh, and Klondike! She’ll take any Suite she wants to.

I called Mom after we were settled. She still didn’t know we’re in town. I found out she was at home and would be there all day.

Izzy found a Limo Service that had vehicles available. Again everyone and everything was loaded.

When we arrived at Mom’s house her new neighbors thought the Mafia had arrived. You could see people peeking out their front windows.

Izzy ran up to the door and rang the door bell. Irene answered the door saw Izzy and yelled for Mom. She ran outside hugging and kissing all of us. Mom of course acted angry that I deceived her.

I first caught Hell from her then was kissed to death. She did the same to all of us except her Grandchildren they just got smothered with kisses. That figures!

Of course Klondike made herself at home. Irene gave her some water, let her outside, came back in, rolled on her back and went to sleep. If she doesn’t have gas, she snores like freight train. Go figure!

It seemed like we talked, talked and talked some more. We found out that Mom was still in contact with David Horowitz. Irene and Katherine are still in contact with their two doctors.

Katherine was still at work. She was working obstetrics this week. Irene had the day off today. Tomorrow she starts in the ER for a week.

We told Mom that after I completed my Master’s I was going in for SRS. Izzy told her after I was healed we were getting married.

Mom totally lost it. She started crying, then Irene started. The river of tears flowed freely.

The time went by quickly that day. We were all exhausted. All of us girls were to meet Mom at Water Tower Place for lunch and some shopping. Izzy promised to take care of Klondike while we are gone (or is it the other way around!).

Izzy called for the cars to take us back to the hotel.

Irene took the moose outside for us. Mom of course tried to feed us one more time.

My Daring Izzy, was the only one to take her up on it. I warned him last November about Mom and her feeding habits. Now he’s going to have to pay the price for over eating.

The PeopleMover Limo (16 Passenger) finally arrived. We rolled everyone into it. As we were travelling down Archer Ave. toward downtown, we kept smelling sewer gas that progressed in intensity.

I couldn’t understand why the privacy partition was down when we got in and now it was up. Normally the drivers liked to talk to the passengers.

I happened to glance over at Izzy, I noticed the look of relief on Izzy’s face as he was holding his stomach. I don’t know who had the worst gas Izzy or Klondike! Oh, the Humanity! Please pass the Gas Masks! Give that man a Zantac, Please!

We finally arrived at the hotel. Abbi, Audrey, the kids and myself had the doors open as soon as the Limo stopped. We left poor Izzy and Klondike alone as we walked really fast away from them. We pretended we didn’t know them.

We settled the children down after they had their baths. They didn’t try to fight the tiredness that crept onto them. They were all asleep within 5 minutes after being tucked in.

Abbi, Audrey and I relaxed in my and Izzy’s room. This was the first time they were ever in Chicago.

I told them of the magnificent museums that the city has. We made plans to go to as many as we could starting with the Museum of Science and Industry.

In the days to come we would visit The Oriental Institute at The University of Chicago, The Chicago Historical Society, Field Museum, The AMA Medical and Surgery Museum, Adler Planetarium, Shedd Aquarium, The Art Institute, Lincoln Park Zoo, Brookfield Zoo, Sears Tower and The Hancock Building Observation Deck. It was a full agenda for them as well as for us.

We decided to make this trip as fun and educational as possible for the Children. It would be fun for us too!

I Called Mom and told her of the change in plans. She thought it was a wonderful idea. Our shopping could be done later in the day. It was a good thing I brought walking shoes!

In the days to come we had fulfilled our ambitious plans. We spent much time with Mom, Irene, and Katherine as well as their suitors. Yes, they also came in from New York to spend the Holidays. Do I hear Wedding Bells?

I of course had one glitch. Ruth Rosen telephoned me one night. The college was giving her a rough time regarding my registration into the Master’s Program. Several of my Educational Transcripts had my old name on them. The Dean of Admission was in a quandary due to this anomaly. They were ready to convene an investigation of my Nursing and Education credentials.

I told Abbi, Audrey, and Izzy what Ruth said. They suggested I speak to Camille. We had just seen Sister Laurence yesterday at the school. I needed an attorney I think. I went to see her again.

I went to Sister’s office and knocked.

"Come in" She said

"My Goodness, can’t you stay away from here" She said.

"Sister I have a problem"

I proceeded to tell her about Ruth’s telephone call conversation.

"Is that all!"

She picked up the phone and dialed a number. Asking the party on the other end to come to her office.

As we waited, we conversed so more. She disclosed she was in constant contact with Audrey and my DON Ruth. She was pleased that I had turned out to be one of her finest Nurses. She was also overjoyed about my relationship with Izzy and his daughters.

A man in his fifties walked into the office, "Hello Sister" ,He said.

He turned toward me "You must be Alexis?"

"Yes I am"

"I’m the hospital and school attorney, Bob Wittig"

"I did the research into your case when you were a student. Sister tells me you have a problem pertaining to your credentials."

I told Bob about the telephone call. I also handed him the letter I always carried from the Psychiatrist as well as my New York Nurses License and Illinois Nurses License.

"Do you have anything planned for right now?"

"No"

"Good! Sister could I use your phone."

Bob used Sister’s phone and spoke to someone saying that we were on our way right now. He also made another call.

"The three of us have to go to Cook County Circuit Court to see Judge Sanders. She’s waiting for us now.

We left sisters office going out the doors of the school. There was a hospital security car waiting for us. As soon as we got in it pulled away from the curb. Ho one spoke a word all the way there.

I noticed we were almost there as we passed the old Harrison Technical High School building on 24th. Street Boulevard. It was now a some sort of a grade school for the Hispanic Community of Little Village.

We turned onto south California Avenue You could see the Cook County Court House and Cook County Jail. What a pleasant sight!

I don’t know how we made it to the Court Building in one piece. I swear after that ride I will never disrespect a Cabby again.

We went through Building Security manned by the biggest Sheriff’s I had ever seen. After taking an elevator and a maze of corridors we entered a well decorated office.

The secretary motioned us through a door. A woman sat at a very large desk motioning us to sit. She wasn’t old or young perhaps in her late forties early fifties. Her face had a severe scowl, but was pretty in its own way. Of course she wore her Judicial Robe the sign of her authority.

After that hike I was ready to plant my ass into any chair. I was sorry I had worm 2" heels. I should have worn my hikers boots.

"Could I see the documentation Bob, Please"

"Yes your Honor" Bob said.

"Alexis, Have you had your SRS yet?"

"No Your Honor." I said in a squeaky voice.

"Don’t be nervous Honey, This is strictly an informal Hearing."

"Sister can you attest to the fact to Alexis’s Transsexualism?"

"Yes Your Honor as you can see before you the signed statement from her Psychiatrist in New York City."

"Alexis, Where is your Legal Residence?"

"Chicago"

It was true I was still Registered to Vote at Mom’s Address. I hadn’t changed it yet.

"When are you going to have your SRS?

"After I complete my Master of Nursing Program. In two years. At that time My Fiancé and I planned to be married."

"You have a Fiancé?"

"Yes your Honor with two children. He’s a Pediatric Physician at the same hospital that I work in."

She looked up and saw my engagement ring on my hand.

"One last question. Do you have intercourse?"

"Your Honor that question is not relevant to my name change. Neither is the love that is shared by us and our children."

"By your last statement I would assume the answer is yes."

"Very well, This court decrees the change of name to Alexis Michael Paderevski and change of sex to female. Let the records be amended as such and the records of this Hearing be Sealed for posterity. This Hearing is concluded. My secretary is typing the necessary legal documents for my signature."

By the time the Judge finished speaking, the papers were in front of her. She signed them and we left thanking her.

I’m now 100% legal as far as documentation is concerned. I now have 8 originals of the Court Decree. I gave 2 originals to Bob. One was his and the other was for Sister Laurence’s files.

When we were outside I told both of them I was going to take the CTA Bus back. I didn’t want to hurt their feelings but I refused to be held hostage in that car with that driver.

"What’s the matter? Did the driver scare you?" Sister asked.

"Did he pay for his Driver’s License? He really did scare me. I have the stains in my panties to prove it."

"Cousin, I admit he really is the Driver from Hell, isn’t he."

On that note I kissed Bob and Camille good bye. I caught the "Green Limousine" for downtown.

All I could think of on the jarring ride was I must have truly Pissed Off the higher entity. He or She gets even by giving Chicago Potholes that could swallow a truck. Why be angry with me? He or She is supposed to be merciful, to forgive our transgressions! I was never a theologian or philosopher why was I thinking this. Maybe I had should start going to church more often!

Before going to the hotel I stopped at Social Security and Vital Statistics, for a new Social Security Card and New Birth Certificate. For a change something went right!

I entered the hotel lobby going to the concierge desk. I needed to FedEx a set of all the documents to Ruth. She would have them tomorrow I was told. Hey! This is Great! Two things in one day that went right.

I wished in the elevator that Izzy was walking Klondike. I’m so tired of being knocked on my ass! Maybe Obedience School! Nah, She’d probably train the instructor like she has us trained.

I opened the door and snuck inside. I think I got my wish! I disrobed and started the water and foaming oils into the tub. Getting in I thought that this was the best part of the day.

I must have dozed off in the bath. I woke up with Mariah and Rebecca kissing me.

"Mommy, Mommy, Guess what!" Mariah said excitedly.

"Daddy let us pet a horse!"

The wonders of children how the most simplistic of things can get them excited. I loved it! I loved them! They rejuvenated my batteries after being fully discharged. I realized what life was about. It was about children! Our Children!

I gave each of them a hug and kiss.

"Now go play with Charlene and Gail while Mommy gets dressed."

They both left closing the door behind them.

My outlook on life was glorious. Things have worked out well with me. I have a Fairy Tale that came true. I was fortunate.

There are other TS’s that life was not good to them. I had heard horror stories of bigotry, hatred, suicide, murder, rape, prostitution, drugs, alcohol and self abuse to name a few. Many were driven to this route in order to live and have their SRS.

Why did this happen? Why does it happen? Why are they and we social pariahs? We are NOT Gay or Gay Queens. We are Transgendered/Transsexuals!

Many Gays consider us psychologically unstable or abominations. They tolerate us as we tolerate them. We are not one of them! We are not even in the same category!

I can and will put the blame where it lies; in the education of children by their parents, teachers, schools, government, Big Business and ministers. Social intolerance cannot and should not be tolerated!

Some of these aforementioned people breathe Fear or Misinformation into children! This is where the moral decay and disrespect starts! To many of these people both men and woman, are Hypocrites!

We are human beings also; and want to be treated as such. I take that back we demand it! We deserve Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness as do all Human Beings. We live, love, and breath!

I thought about these things as I got dressed. I couldn’t help but cry. My tears are for you my TS Sisters and Brothers. May happiness find you All. It surely has found me!

The last few days of our visit were great. I just dreaded the packing among other things. It seems we collected more then what we came with. Oh, Those shopping trips! My aching feet and depleted wallet. I’ll have to replace my Charge Cards. I think they died!

The vast majority of our collection was to be shipped back to New York. All of us had decided it. Arrangements were made for the transport. I wasn’t about to make the airlines any richer then they were.

The night before leaving we all went to a Greek Restaurant in Greek Town on Halsted Street. What a mistake that was! I completely forgot about Izzy and Grecian Lamb. The fires were stoked! Before we left I think he cleared out a major portion of the restaurant. He should have been an Anesthetist. He was an excellent Gas Passer.

His picture must be all over that Greek Town with the caption in Greek "DO NOT FEED LAMB-POISONOUS, NAUSEOUS GASES ABOUND" All of the family and our guests laughed about it. They should be in bed with him! He even asked for a Doggy Bag for the leftovers.

OhmyGod! We have a flight in the morning. He’s going to kill us all! Damn, I didn’t make a Last Will and Testament.

We made it back to the hotel. Klondike was babysat by the maid while we were gone. Of course the Mad Howler was on her best behavior until we walked in. She must have smelled the leftovers I was carrying.

Thank You God, for my padded Ass! I was on the floor in nanoseconds. She inhaled the contents of the bag, including the Grecian Lamb.

I slept with Mariah and Rebecca. Izzy had Klondike!

We closed and locked the inner door. Audrey stuffed towels in the cracks against air seepage. We all slept well.

Everything went well at the O’Hare. Klondike went into the kennel without a fuss. Izzy was mad at us for last night. Mom, Irene, and Katherine were there with their guests. Security didn’t hassle us. We made our plane on time. I’d say it went well.

Believe it or not it was good to be home. Audrey picked up the Zoo at the Vet. Abbi and I unpacked all of the luggage. Charlene, Gail, Mariah and Rebecca did the laundry without being asked. Now that is a true childs sign of "Gimme"!

Poor Izzy had Klondike again!

Since the kids didn’t get their gifts from Santa or us, we had a belated Christmas and Hanukkah celebration.

I was spellbound to see the joy on the faces of the kids shredding the paper from their presents.

I told Izzy earlier I didn’t want anything. I have him and the children who could want anything else. I told the same to Audrey and Abbi. Speaking to this family is like speaking to a rock.

The most treasured gift I received was a Gold Heart Shaped Locket and chain. Inside were two pictures. Izzy and our girls on one side. The other was Mom, Irene, Katherine, Audrey, Abigail, Charlene and Gail. It was from all of my family. I thought of it as a future Family Heirloom

Although we still had a few more days off, it was the first day of our Master’s classes tomorrow evening. Party Time was over!

As the days and months passed onto the next two years the combination of the hospital work, home, family, and of course Klondike. Audrey, Abbi and I were frazzled to say the least. We were the Bitches from Hell!

Izzy and all the kids were our salvation and lifeline. They helped to keep our sanity in so many special ways just doing simple chores like the laundry or taking care of the Zoo. They never realized what it meant to us.

The day finally arrived that we received our Master Degree’s. Mom and our other sisters arrived from Chicago to see the Degrees conferred. We were gathered at the table having coffee when I noticed Mom’s left hand. Wow, what a rock! I thought she was wearing her ring from Dad.

"Mom, is that your engagement ring from Dad?"

She blushed profusely saying, "No Honey, your Dad never gave me one."

I was about to drop the matter when Katherine spoke up saying, "Didn’t Mom tell you? It’s from David."

Abbi, Audrey and I got really excited. Mom deserved to be happy and she was. I told Izzy. he didn’t even know about it. This event was momentous! Even the rumor machine at work didn’t know. We were not about to feed it! They deserved their privacy.

We did it! No more classes, papers or advisors. Mom and David came together. The rest of the family came also.

No, Klondike stayed home. Thank Goodness!

After the ceremonies our DON, Ruth came to us saying, "Ladies you are to be in my office at 9:00am tomorrow morning. Please be on time."

Wow! Did she seem Pissed. I tried to think of any situation that we were all involved in. Nothing came to mind. Mom, David and Izzy just blew it off saying "Don’t worry it’s nothing."

I was worried. It was my nature to worry. The Festivities were dampened by my mood. Not even Izzy could make me laugh. I stayed up that whole night.

I was in a terrible mood when we arrived at the hospital. At the appointed time we where in Ruth’s office waiting for her. When she arrived she shut the door. That was another bad sign.

"Ladies, Thank You for coming. After much discussion with Administration and the Chief of Staff we have decided to promote you. Audrey, to be the new ADON (Assistant Director of Nursing). Abigail, the new ER nursing Supervisor. Alexis Darling, You have been my proverbial pain in the Ass. You take so much Shit and never lose you temper. Your tact and diplomacy is a legendary skill. You my Dear, are to relieve Audrey as Children’s Floor Nursing Supervisor."

I was about ready to say something until Audrey pinched me on the Ass to be quiet. She got my attention quickly.

"You are to assume your new duties immediately. You cannot and will not turn down the offers."

This had to be the best kept secret of the hospital. We better watch our backs. There will be a few well thrown knives aimed at us. Let the Cat Fights Begin!

We did well in our jobs and home life in the past six months. Izzy and all the kids where happy and content.

All was well until I received a letter from a Class One Trauma Center in Chicago. The Chief Administrator invited me to submit my Curriculum Vitae for consideration as DON.

At first I thought it was part of an elaborate hoax perpetrated by Irene or Katherine.

I had just completed my Rounds of the Floor. I was on my way back to my office. The added work was astonishing as I muddled through it.

The operator paged me for an outside phone call. The first thing that came to mind was the children.

I called the operator and was connected with my party immediately.

"Is this Alexis Paderevski?"

"Yes it is, may I help you."

" my name is George Zepp, Chief Administrator. Did you receive my letter as yet?"

"Yes sir. Just today."

"Out of curiosity. Why me."

"You have been highly recommended by Ruth Rosen your DON and David Horowitz your Chief of Staff. Dr. Horowitz will be assuming the Chief of Staff position at our hospital soon.

As a stipulation of employment he wants you on staff as the DON. The DON position has been unfilled here for six months. The Board of Directors has authorized an employment contract for five years, to you if you should take the position."

"I see."

"Will you please send me your C.V."

"Sure, but I must speak with my fiancé and family first. There are children involved in this possible move."

"Yes I do understand. I will be expecting your C.V. in the next few days."

"Yes sir and Thank You. Good Bye."

I was in total shock after that conversation. I had to take several minutes to compose myself. I needed to talk to Audrey as quickly as I could.

I left the Floor, arriving at her office a few minutes later. She wasn’t in, but Ruth was.

"Ruth can we talk?"

"Sure Alexis, what’s on your mind?"

I told her about the phone call. I thanked her for the recommendation. I had my reservations as to the position. I was worried about many things including being blackballed again in our profession.

"Alexis, I would surely hate to see you leave. The Staff has fallen for your charms. But, this is a once in a Lifetime opportunity you owe it to yourself and our profession.

Izzy is dedicated to you. You are dedicated to him and the children. They’ll follow where ever you go.

I shouldn’t tell you this. Izzy was also offered a position as Chief Pediatrician and a full professorship.

If you’re that worried about it, take a Leave of Absence for the length of your contract. That way you don’t burn your bridges."

My mind was spinning. I asked Ruth for the rest of the day off. I had to think. This was not the right atmosphere to do it in. She agreed and gave me two days extra.

I left the hospital and took a Taxi home. I was lucky to get an English speaking driver. He took me right home.

I changed out of my Scrubs and took a very long hot bath.

I thought about the reasons I gave Ruth about not going back. In some ways I wanted to go back to Chicago to live. On the other hand our daughters would be uprooted from school, friends, and family here. I was afraid they wouldn’t like Chicago. I was certain Izzy would be successful no matter where he went to practice medicine.

I pruned up and got out of my bath. I dried off and put my hair into a braid. I found my panties, bra, jeans, a pink pullover top and white flat sandals.

I went upstairs and got Klondike’s leash and harness. She was very cooperative as I got her ready. I grabbed my purse and we left.

As we walked I was still thinking about the whole situation again. I really wasn’t going to send my C.V. to Chicago.

I know David recommended me for the position. What I didn’t know if it was because of Mom or because of my skills. I knew that was not a valid question as David was aware of my Nursing Skills.

Klondike and I walked for over an hour. I decided it was time to go back home.

When we got back I noticed Audrey’s car was back. The back door was also unlocked as was her habit when home.

When we walked in Audrey, Abbi and Izzy were sitting at the kitchen table.

"We were starting to get worried about you, Sis." Abbi Said.

"I had some thinking to do. I didn’t want to worry anyone."

"Ruth told us about the letter and your concerns." Audrey said.

"Darling, why didn’t you tell me about your offer?" I asked.

"Because the position would not be ready until June when my contract expires. That’s an awful lot of months to go. Also I just received the letter today." Izzy said taking my hand in his.

"Honey, I‘m sorry. I thought you received the letter several weeks ago. Please forgive me." I said as I kissed him.

"Well what are you going to do? That’s one Hell of an offer." Audrey said.

"Sweetheart, I think you should take the position and do what Ruth said. Take a Leave of Absence." Izzy said.

"That’s easily said for you. what about our daughters?"

"They’re going to want to go with their mother and that’s you, Honey. "Izzy said.

"You know I won’t be able to have my SRS in January like we planned. I still want to be married to you! I Love you! I’m so afraid of losing you and the kids."

Izzy took me into his very strong arms saying, "The children and I will always be with you as your Mom, Sisters and Nieces are. We’ll get married as we planned in the spring. If you decide to take the position Mariah and Rebecca are going with you."

"And you’re staying with us here so we can watch you. We know how you MD’s are. Don’t we Sis!" Audrey chimed

"Why do you women always pick on me?" Izzy said.

"Because we love you and you’re very handy around the house for repairs." Abbi said with a smile.

"I take it the matter is settled. She is taking the position and the kids are going with her." Abbi said

Whether I wanted to go or not I was going. I sent the C.V. off next day delivery by FedEx. We talked to all the kids at one time. They were all for it! Mariah and Rebecca were sad to be leaving their dad, two aunts and cousins. Charlene and Gail said as long as they could come visit us, Grandma and their Aunts.

Things were going fairly well for about two weeks. I had to go to Chicago for the necessary interview. Toward the end of the day, a Job Offer was made to me. The employment package was very lucrative but certain items had to be negotiated. I accepted the offer. I had to be there in three

weeks to start.

I telephoned Ruth from O’Hare Airport to tell her the news and give her my notice. She was sorry to see me leave but the opportunity was once in a lifetime.

I telephoned Izzy next I told him what happened. He promised to tell everyone. I would be home in a few hours.

Mom was next, you would have thought she’d won the Lottery. Her baby was coming home with her two babies. The Family was almost together again.

I caught my flight it landed on time in NYC. I took a Taxi home. I was really lucky again I had someone I could communicate with.

Klondike was the first to greet me coming through the door. The only thing I won’t miss is being knocked on my ass all the time by her. Everyone heard the commotion and came running. That’s how they knew I was home.

As Izzy picked me up, he kissed me long and hard with much passion. I was only gone for the day!

"Alright you two, the bedroom is downstairs." Audrey said.

She knew just how to make me blush. Audrey would do it anywhere, anyplace or anytime. She actually took pride in making me blush. I’ll get even with Mom, she taught Audrey.

I went downstairs to change my clothes. I couldn’t wait to get out of the business suit, pantyhose and heels. Everyone followed me to find out the particulars of the meeting. All I wanted was a bit of privacy to change into my Lounger and slippers. They all piled into our bedroom all that was needed was Klondike, Cats and Ferrets.

I went to the bathroom where I knew they wouldn’t follow. I totally ignored any questions until I came out.

Here I was tired, hungry and had very sore feet and they want to talk. That’s my Family!

After I had a snack I told them everything that had happened in Chicago.

During the next two weeks I was always tired. There was always something to be done. We had to purchase another vehicle. That in itself would have been enough to cause a divorce. I wanted a Mini Van, he wanted a SUV. We bought the Mini Van. He said it was to keep peace, I said it was to keep his piece.

Ladies always remember you have the control over men!

Packing what we were to take was real fun. According to the children they needed everything to go with us. I finally told them no more then five dolls or stuffed animals. I threw them out of their room while I packed their clothes. Oh, The Temper Tantrums! I was even told I didn’t love them.

Then it was the parties. I asked people to just save the money or buy something for the Children on the Floor.

A new Big Screen Television and VCR was purchased for them.

Now that I liked!

The day we were to leave I noticed my first gray hair. Gee, I wonder why!

Abbi, Audrey, Charlene and Gail just kept crying. It was like that for the past two days everytime they saw me.

Izzy just was the most affectionate that I had ever seen him.

Poor Klondike! She knew something was wrong for the past month. She wouldn’t leave me or the kids alone. She was so sad when we drove off. She put up such a fuss! I will really miss her and everyone else.

Well, we made it to Chicago after Ten Zillion pit stops. All I heard was Mommy I have to go to the Powder Room. That was after you pulled out of the Gas Station. All in all the girls were good on the trip. At least they didn’t get car sick!

We finally pulled up in front of Mom’s house. She was expecting us. I called her from South Bend, Indiana. I couldn’t wait to get out of the Mini Van.

Mom and Irene fussed over the girls. By the time Izzy gets out here those kids are going to be spoiled. I decided I had to find a house for us quickly.

I found the perfect house in a suburb called River Forest. The owner had died and it was on the Block as part of the Estate. It had six very large Bedrooms upstairs and two downstairs, a family room, a very full modern kitchen, formal dining room, Den/Library, recreation room in the basement, indoor pool, Glass Hot House and a four car garage on ¾ of an acre of land. It came fully furnished. When I was told the asking price I almost died. When the appraisal was done it came to six times the asking price.

I called Izzy that evening and told him what I found. He said it sounded fine to him. If I liked it we’ll get it.

When I told him the asking price there was complete silence on the phoneline. I hoped he didn’t go into Cardiac Arrest. He told me to make an offer on the property. He would wire the downpayment where they wanted it to go.

They accepted the offer for the property. Izzy transferred the funds. The loan was approved. The house was ours!

Mom, Irene and Katherine had never seen the house yet. When they saw it they said it was a mansion. They loved it!

As far as the furnishings I decided to leave them as they were. It was all Art Deco in Style and gorgeous.

The kitchen had all commercial restaurant grade appliances in Stainless Steel. Look Mom! No Hand Prints.

I got the girls registered for school. I have never in my life met such mindless individuals.

We took pictures of the whole house sending them to Izzy, Audrey, and Abbi. The kids and I missed them so much it felt as if there was a void in our lives. We, I mean I even missed Klondike it was too quiet without her.

Halloween and Thanksgiving had come and gone. I was making Mom angry. I was very moody and downright antisocial.

I cried myself to sleep almost every night. We missed Izzy, Audrey, Abbi, Charlene and Gail so very much. We tried to limit the telephone usage to keep within our budget. I found myself writing e-mails everyday to them.

Mom and David had set the date to be married. It was January 2nd. They decided to start the New Year right. We were all happy for them. They decided to just have a small simple ceremony with a Rabbi and Catholic priest presiding.

I asked Izzy, Audrey, and Abbi if they could attend. I found out all of them were working. They said they would try. It was disappointing for me and the girls. I cried myself to sleep again.

When I got into my office there was a large box on my desk. I called my secretary in.

"Jennifer, why is that box on my desk?"

"That’s your costume."

"What costume?"

"I thought you knew."

"What should I know?"

"It’s for the Children’s Floor Christmas Party."

"It’s hospital tradition for the DON to be Mrs. Santa Claus."

I took out the Red Velvet Dress. It could fit six of me into it. The last DON must have been as big as a battle ship.

"You’ve got to be kidding?"

"Oh No, Those kids are expecting Santa and Mrs. Claus. All the floor nurses and aides have been telling the kids about your upcoming visit. They’ll be awfully disappointed if she doesn’t show up. The Staff will be very angry with you for breaking tradition."

Damn! There’s no way to get out of this one. I absolutely refuse to wear that matronly ratty ass dress.

I called Mom and told her of my predicament. All she did was laugh and laugh hard. I asked if she could suggest something. She would call me back in a few minutes.

When she finally called me back I was making a tour of the hospital. The operator found me on the Children’s Floor.

Mom got the telephone number and address of a seamstress and costume designer. I had an appointment this evening. I thanked her and would call her back later.

I went from room to room seeing bed after bed of sick children. Depending upon the Doctors, Nurses and other Staff to make them well so they could go home to their families. I realized how Self-centered I had become. If it took wearing a costume to make these children happy then I would become Mrs. Santa Claus to the best of my ability. I might even suggest going through the whole hospital to spread a little cheer to our patients.

I phoned the Chief Administrator and told him of my idea. He agreed to it and to use whatever Staff and funds I needed. He was going to advise the Public Relations Department.

I called my secretary to have all ADON’s, Floor Supervisors, and her in the main conference room in 30 minutes. I arrived at the appointed time everyone else was waiting for me.

I told the Staff my thoughts. They were all for it. Administration was to fund whatever we needed.

One nurse suggested a Christmas choral group and Santa’s Helpers be added. I agreed, on the condition they ask for volunteers first if none volunteered then they could chose people. I needed those names tomorrow. This was the first time the Staff had come together agreeing unanimously with no desenters. They started acting as a team. I felt a feeling of genuine contentment in this job that the patients are going to benefit from this idea.

I didn’t know it but, David was in the back listening to everything that was said.

At the conclusion of the meeting I could see that the morale was at an all time high. If my supervisors were infected with a Holiday Spirit the hospital as a whole might get it.

Jennifer and myself had just walked into the office. I told Jennifer I was leaving early to see if anything could be done with this dress. To please convey that message to anyone that called for me.

I arrived at the address Mom gave me. It wasn’t in the greatest of locations in the Village of Oak Park. At this point didn’t care where the shop was. I hoped that this person was a miracle worker.

I walked into the costume shop, looking around. The designs and quality were first rate. It didn’t contain the junk that you would find in the stores during Halloween. It was more like the costumes you would find in the Lyric Opera House or a Broadway Play.

A very pretty petite lady in her late forties with the name of Shirley asked if she could help.

I told her how I came to be there and what I wanted. She took one look at the dress I brought in and looked at me shaking her head.

"Honey, This dress is shot. You can see the fabric is worn and frayed in some areas. I wouldn’t recommend doing any alterations to it."

"Is there a possibility that you have a costume to replace this one or even to have one made."

"Since you are going to do this for the adult and children patients at the hospital. Give a me day or so I have a design idea. All the garments I make are of the highest quality. Let me get your measurements."

She took my measurements. I also told her about futher costumes for my Staff.

"In that case I could be there in two days. Could you have those people ready to be measured by then?"

I told her yes. She said her fee would be 2% over material cost. She would donate the garments but she couldn’t afford to do it.

I left the shop and drove home. The girls were home from school waiting for me we talked about their day as we made the evening meal. All they kept saying is they missed Daddy. Well, I missed Daddy also! The girls and I slept in the same bed that night.

I walked into my office after grabbing some coffee. I had a mountain of messages, both on paper and voicemail.

Other Departments had heard what we were doing for the patients. They all wanted to participate in any way they could.

These are the same people that would cut your throat for more money in their budgets. As the saying goes "It is now time to pay the piper."

When Jennifer came into the office I asked her to call the various Department Heads. To tell them we have not assessed our needs and will in touch with them. I had more important needs on my mind ..The Patients of the hospital.

No matter what I said or did no one got upset or angry. It must be close to Christmas!

I had returned to my office from my hospital Rounds. Jennifer said that a lady named Shirley had called. I phoned her immediately.

Shirley asked to come see me as she had a costume to show me and some designs she worked up. I said I would be in my office for the rest of the day.

I just finished the evaluations of my Supervisors that I do monthly.

Shirley came into my office followed by a Security officer pushing a loaded utility cart. The thing was so full the security officer couldn’t look over it. My office was not terribly large perhaps 14’x14’ there just wasn’t any way that thing was going to fit.

"Leave the cart by my secretary’s desk. Shirley, why didn’t you tell me you were moving your shop into my office."

"I’m sorry I got kind of carried away after your visit. After I took your measurements I started to visualize a younger, more vibrant Mrs. Claus, not the type we normally see in advertisements. At the same time she’s not a Rockette oozing sexuality."

Shirley went out of the office to where the utility cart was. she returned holding a pair of Black Patent Leather Boots with a 2 ½" Heel trimmed at the top in white fur that went to the knee.

The dress was a variation of one of those sexy maid costumes. A body suit was used that was in Burgundy Red Stretch Velvet and long sleeved. The bodice of the suit and the wrists had white fur. The skirt was in Burgundy Red Velvet, sequined and beaded with a hem to just above the knee trimmed in fur. The skirt was pushed out by multi layered crinolines.

A 3" Black Patent Leather Belt with a Gold Buckle went around the skirt to accentuate the waist .

There was a Red Leather Hooded Parka trimmed in white fur, at the hood, front opening, hem and the cuffs.

This was topped by a Red Velvet Santa hat trimmed in white fur and a ball of white fur with Gold Colored Bells at the tip of the hat. Red Leather Gloves and a Red leather Shoulder Style Purse, a matching Choker and White Tights.

Everything looked fine but I wasn’t sure about the Bodysuit because of the low cut.

She also showed me a matching Santa Suit. I called the Administrator immediately to come to my office to see these costumes. After all he was paying for them.

I took my costume into my attached bathroom and put it on. I didn’t realize it but she had built in the bra into the suit to accent and build up my breasts.

I finally put the whole costume on it was fabulous looking and well made. Wow, could this woman sew!

I walked out of the Bathroom and received a wolf whistle. I blushed when I saw the Chief Administrator and the Chief of Staff.

"Alexis, if I was twenty years younger and not happily married, I’d would ask you out. You look absolutely stunning."

"Izzy is going to wish he was here to see you in that costume. I’ll make sure he gets plenty of pictures." David said with a smile.

Jennifer came into the office. All she could do was smile at first.

"If you walk around the hospital in that costume you’d better have very big bodyguards. Those Interns are gonna try to get into your pants."

Shirley checked the costume over, while talking to the men. They both like the Santa Suit as well as the ten female and ten male elves costumes. The way Shirley was speaking to these men was as if she spoken to them before. Maybe I’m imagining things!

We decided to have the patients Christmas Party on Christmas Eve. Many people gave up a few hours of their day of just to participate hoping to bring a little cheer to those that had to stay. The doctors had discharged those that could go home.

It had snowed during the night. Mariah and Rebecca asked to stay at Mom’s house overnight. I wonder what they conned her out of now!

I got out of bed thinking of what the Staff had done.

The PR Staff had been busy. They lined up several local television and newspapers reporters to cover this event. They also managed to get several local entertainment personalities to cheer these people up. This included a special clown seen on a SuperStation.

The Maintenance and BioMedical Engineering Departments Constructed and Gizmo’d out a sleigh that would fit in the elevators. That thing has more flashing lights then an Ambulance or Cop Car.

The Staff had even managed to find a Malamute dog sled team to pull it under harness.(The Team had to be loose hair free before going upstairs. Oh Boy! Bath Time, Blow Dry, and a Vacuum too! It’s a shame Klondike isn’t here.)

We had Staff that were also professional musicians that had volunteered to play for visitors and patients. They were in various areas of the hospital conducting concerts. That started at mid December until January 2nd.

I heard a few of the Nursing Staff say that the hospital decorations were even more elaborate then have ever been. Did someone fire the "Bean Counters"? Did the Medicare Checks come in?

In general all the Hospital Staff contributed in some way to make everyone, both Patient and Visitor, become a part of the Holiday Season. All celebrated no matter what religion or non-religion they are.

I hurriedly got dressed in casual style, jeans, bulky knit sweater, tights, woolen socks, and of course snow boots. I tried to telephone Audrey, there was no answer. The house was checked over, the Burglar Alarm was set as I grabbed my Storm Coat going out the door.

Jennifer arrived early to help everyone to get ready and into costume. Shirley volunteered to help me get dressed, get my makeup on and hair braided.

I finally finished with their help. I must have dropped a few pounds in weight. Everything fit better than it did before. Either that or the Magic Seamstress struck again. Jennifer had her elves costume on she was ready and so was I.

AS we were leaving the office the telephone rang. Jennifer answered it and spoke a few words hanging up the phone.

I was needed on the Flight Deck by the one of the Flight Nurses. I grabbed the Leather Parka hoping it was warm enough.

As I went through the corridors of the hospital I felt as if everyone was staring at me. I also got a few Wolf Whistles going through the ER.

Gladys our Lead Flight Nurse was waiting at the MBB-BK-117 Medical Helicopter one of three we had. It was starting to snow harder.

"What’s wrong Gladys?"

"We have a bad BioComm on board this Bird."

"Call BioMed to replace it, Stat."

"We did and they can’t."

"Why not? We have two spares."

"They’re at the manufactures for a recall. Bird Three is down for maintenance we could use that one to keep two Birds in the air."

"Call BioMed and do it?"

"By the way Boss. I love that outfit. It’s really cute on you. Don’t let the Flyboys see ya when you pass the Ready Room."

I gave her a dirty look and left the way I came bypassing the Pilot’s Ready Room. Gladys was right! Our pilots had a reputation of making love to anything that had a hole in it. They didn’t care if it was male, female, animal, vegetable or mineral. They knew their jobs and did it right saving lives. A few indiscretions were overlooked from time to time. Damn, I was forty-five minutes late!

I stopped at the ER Nurses Station to use the telephone. I called the operator to notify the Children’s Floor Nurses Station I was on the way up. She told me to go to the Main Lobby Entrance.

I arrived at the Main Lobby. What a mess! There were cameras everywhere. The Sleigh was there and the dogs all hooked up except for the lead dog. They were gorgeous!

All the all the elves were there except for five females and one Santa. I was speaking to the Security Director. I heard a Malamute howling coming from the same direction where the Sleigh was. I didn’t pay any attention.

All I heard was a woman say "look out! one of the dogs got loose."

I was jumped on buy a big brute of a malamute. I was knocked clear on my ass. I thought I was going to be licked to death. I looked at the dog petting it and saw to my amazement it was Klondike. I could tell it was her by her black mask around the eyes. She also wore a red nose and antlers on her head.

"Okay Moose, get off of me. What are you doing here?"

I took her leash and turned around. I saw all the elves finally came.

Four of the female elves looked really short. I took a closer look. I recognized Charlene, Gail, Mariah and Rebecca. Then I recognized Mom, Irene, Katherine, Audrey and Abbi.

I ran to them and they ran to me. All of us were crying and hugging. I noticed the most important person was missing. IZZY!

"When did you get here? How did you get here? Where’s Izzy?"

"My God! Mom, she hasn’t changed! One question after another." Audrey said.

"Easy Sis, or you’ll wind up in CCU." Abbi said.

I was so happy to see them I started crying again. As I cried Klondike howled again. I saw Santa walking down the corridor. I knew that walk! I looked at the eyes. Santa my ass! That was my Izzy!

I ran to him and jumped into his arms. I kissed him as hard as I could.

"Honey, I love you." I said.

He kissed me again longer.

We broke it off after David touched us on the shoulders saying "The Press is watching you."

"OhmyGod! They have it all on videotape." I said blushing.

"We’ll show it to our Grandchildren. I love you and missed you so much. So did Klondike. She wouldn’t eat for a week after you guys left." Izzy said.

"By the way Sis. The Moving Van won’t be here for two more weeks. I hope you have a lot of extra clothes for us to wear." Audrey said.

I thought I heard correctly but I wasn’t sure.

"What did you say."

"You heard what I said. Don’t play games."

"You heard her! we’re all moving in. The whole damn zoo. All your sisters, nieces, daughters, animals, future husband and Klondike your dog.

I started crying again. Then it dawned on me. The crying stopped.

"What do you mean my dog? The Moose!"

"This is the best we’ve seen her since you left New York. She’s her old self. Honey, like it or not your stuck with her and us." Audrey said.

Shirley appeared out of nowhere saying, " Alright girls the kids are waiting. Let’s repair your makeup and get going.

As Shirley worked on us, Izzy hooked up Klondike to the lead position of the dog team. She was the largest of all the Malamutes.

We were ready to see the children, patients and visitors. And we did!

The event was a huge success! It even made national news coverage on television. I even made the front page of the Chicago Sun-Times flat on ass with Klondike kissing me. I had that one framed and hung in my office.

The Chicago Tribune had us on page three with me in Izzy’s arms kissing. I had that one framed too!

Making those Children and Adults feel good was a very wonderful warm feeling for everyone that participated.

One story the press never saw was a terminally ill little boy that didn’t want to see Santa. He wanted to see the dogs.

Izzy picked him up and carried him to Klondike. All the Malamutes came and circled the little boy kissing him being very gentle. The boy smiled and laughed. He got his wish!

That boy went into a coma that night and passed away three days later from his illness. I think we made his last hours on earth happy ones.

A hospital PR person managed to take a picture of that event. It was never released to the Press! The boy was buried with a copy of the picture under his tiny hands. The parents framed the other in their sons memory.

All of us will remember that Christmas Eve for the rest of our lives.

Here it is a year later.

I’m still at the same hospital as the DON. I finally had my SRS. Izzy and I are happily Married. Our daughters Mariah and Rebecca are in school. They think they want to enter the medical profession.

Audrey is an Assistant Administrator of Operations at the same hospital and is engaged to a Reco-Doc.(She always wanted bigger Boobs!) Gail doesn’t want to be anything but a nurse or maybe a Veterinarian.

Abbi is the Director of Continuing Education at the same hospital and is engaged to a gynecologist.(No Comment!) Charlene wants to be a nurse.

We made Irene and Katherine go back to school. Next year they will graduate as Nurse Practitioners. They will also be going into private practice with their Doctor husbands that are GP’s.

Mom and David also tied the knot. David is still Chief of Staff. Mom volunteers at the hospital. They spend a lot of time with all their grandchildren.

I know you’re asking what happened to Klondike. She’s still with us. (Who in their right mind would want her.) When she came into Heat, we mated her with one of the dog sled males. She had nine beautiful puppies.

All of my sisters, Mom and, Jennifer took one. The sires owner took a female and Izzy and I kept one of her sons. Her offspring may be even bigger than she is. She is teaching him everything that she knows.

Oye, My Poor Aching Ass!
