The Male Debutantes' Pageant
by Annabel Naismith
Chapter One
"Well, what are we going to do then?" The Nutstead village youth club committee meeting was stagnating.
"What about a beauty pageant?" suggested Dave.
"Yeah, that'd be great," agreed Chris. Dave and Chris were keen sportsmen. Both were tall and athletic, although Dave was noticeably heavier than Chris.
"Oh right," said Kelly sarcastically. "You just want to leer at us girls."
"Why don't we make it a fashion show. The girls will enjoy it and they will be much happier doing that." said Susie.
"Well yeah, but the boys will have no interest in that at all," said Chris. "I think the beauty pageant will be much more popular."
There was an outcry from the girls.
"Girls won't do that," said Michelle.
"Well, if you're so keen on a beauty pageant, why don't the boys do one?" said Kelly.
"Yeah," chorused the other girls. There were five girls at the meeting and Dave and Chris were the only two boys.
"What you mean us walking about on the stage wearing just our underwear?" queried Chris.
"Well why not - you expected us girls to," Kelly could see the boys were feeling uncomfortable with the idea and decided to force the issue. "Or, if you are scared of showing off too much flesh, you could dress as girls."
This was greeted with enthusiastic approval from the girls.
"Well, we'd look silly as girls, I'm much too big," said Dave.
"That won't matter," said Kelly, "models are always tall."
Chris decided to try a different approach. "If the boys are doing all the dressing up, what will the girls do? They'll be left out."
"They can help the boys get ready," said Karen, "I'm sure my brother could be persuaded to join in. I'm sure he tries on my clothes sometimes."
"No!" exclaimed her friend Susie, "I always thought he was a bit weedy but I didn't know he did that. How did you find out?"
"Well, you know, I keep finding my things have been moved. I've never caught him, but if I ever did.."
"Can we get back to the point," said Kelly. "I propose that we hold the young male debutantes beauty pageant next month at the end of June. That will be timed after the exams finish and before everyone goes on holiday. Will someone second the motion?"
"I second that," said Michelle.
"Those in favour?" said Kelly. The five girls promptly raised their hands. Chris looked at Dave.
"What do you reckon, Dave?" he said, "I'll give it a go if you will. Or are you chicken?"
"Don't call me chicken. Oh OK, why not. We can have a laugh. We'll have to have names - I'll be Norma Stitts."
"Well what name can I have?"
"Well," thought Dave, "Why not Norma Sboobies or Norma Snockers?"
"Can we sort these details out after the vote, please?" Kelly was determined to get a unanimous vote for proposal. The boys looked at each other and slowly raised their hands.
"Passed unanimously," said Kelly triumphantly. "Can you make a note of that in the minutes of the meeting, please Nikki." Nikki wrote furiously on her pad.
"Yay." said Karen and Susie in unison.
"Hey, Dave," said Chris, "if you're Norma Stitts and I'm Norma Snockers, we could have a bet on which has the biggest tits."
"You're on," said Dave.
"Men!" chorused the girls.
"Why not get the girls to form teams to work with a boy each and get him ready." suggested Nikki. She had caught up with the meeting, having chosen not to make a note in the minutes of the details of the wager between Chris and Dave.
"I don't need help from you lot," said Dave, "I'll just borrow some stuff off Liz and I'll get a couple of the lads to help me." Liz was Dave's older sister, a large girl at 5 feet 10 inches but still several inches shorter than Dave.
"Actually, getting the stuff will be a problem for some of the boys, so having teams of girls will help."
"Well, Andy won't have a problem," said Karen, referring to her brother who was 18 months her junior, "he's probably got a complete wardrobe of my clothes in his room now."
"Really?" said Susie, "but what about make-up and things?"
"Oh shit, we don't have to wear make-up do we?" Dave was aghast.
"Make-up will not be compulsory," said Kelly, "but it is a beauty pageant and the boys should make an effort. After all, we have to wear make-up. And high heels."
"You're having a laugh!" chuckled Chris, "Have you seen the size of Dave's feet? He can't get men's shoes his size, never mind women's. Mind you, I take size 11, so I am going to have a problem as well."
"What about hair and nails and stuff," said Susie.
"I think the teams of girls should be able to sort out their boys so they look nice, including hair and nails. We've got six weeks, so we should be able to get some of the boys to have presentable hair and nails in that time."
"I'm not going to change into a girl in 6 weeks," said Dave rebelliously.
"No, but there is more to feminine deportment than strapping on the biggest boobs you can find and wearing your sister's skirt." said Kelly
"I think Kelly does have a point Dave,"said Chris, "some of the boys might like getting their nails filed by the girls or whatever. You know," he finished lamely. Dave gave him the sort of look you might expect if he had announced he was gay.
"Yeah, that's right Dave," agreed Michelle, "and on the day, we can get them ready and paint their nails or put highlights in their hair so they look nice. You don't have to do that if you don't want to."
"Hmm," said Dave, "this is all a bit too girly for my liking but I'll come along and have a laugh." He paused for a few seconds. "All this chatting has given me an enormous thirst, fancy a beer Chris?"
"Yeah. We are adjourning the meeting then?" he asked Kelly.
"Yes, the meeting is adjourned at 9:35." confirmed Kelly, looking at her watch. Nikki made a note of the time on her pad.
The two boys went out of the church hall meeting room and walked the 50 yards or so to the village pub. At seventeen, they were still too young to be served beer according to the law but their size was such that fitted in with the other rugby players who frequented the White Hart.
After the boys had left, the girls were full of ideas of who could work together in teams and which boys would make suitable candidates to dress as girls.
Karen and Susie had decided that that Karen's younger brother would make an excellent candidate. "I'm sure he has worn my things, or at least, he's definitely investigated them," said Karen.
"Yes, you were saying," said Susie. "It would really freak me out if I had a brother who did that."
"Yeah, and he reads my magazines. Plus his feet aren't too big - and his hair's quite long, and its a sort of dirty blonde colour. We will be able to put some highlights in he'll look OK." Karen paused, thinking about the look she would try to achieve for her brother.
"How are you going to persuade him?" asked Susie. "I can't imagine him being too keen on the idea."
"Oh, I think I can persuade him. And if I tell him that Chris and Dave are entering the competition, he'll know it won't be too bad."
"Yes but how are you going to?" persisted Susie.
"Well there is the carrot and the stick. The carrot is I tell him that he'll have a chance of getting to know girls. If he is dressed like one and there are other girls around, they will accept him as a friend. You know how nervous and tongue-tied he gets. And you know he fancies Amy something rotten but he's never found the courage to ask her out. I bet she would help to persuade him. The stick is to threaten him. You know, tell him that I know that he secretly of goes through my things. I wonder what he would do if I actually confronted him. I reckon he'll do it." Amy was Susie's younger sister, in the same school year as Andy.
"What's he going to be called?" asked Susie. "How about Andrea."
Karen thought for a few moments. "That would be shortened back to Andi, wouldn't it. What about Mandy? Mandy Monroe, you know Marilynn Monroe's reincarnation."
"I like that," said Susie. "I wonder if she will."
"You called him she," said Karen accusingly.
"Yes, well she will be. won't she. When we have finished with her, no-one would think she's really a boy."
"What are you thinking?" Karen looked closely at Susie, to see what plan was being devised for her unsuspecting brother.
"Well," said Susie, "I think we should do this as well as we can. We can start filing his nails as soon as he agrees. Then we can keep his legs shaved, get him used to nail varnish, just clear to begin with. Then we could try some make-up to get him used to that. Maybe we could get him to dress as a girl to come shopping with us - and if Amy came along."
"I don't know if we could do that. God knows what mum and dad are going to say."
"That could help our plan," said Susie. "If you're worried about what they will say, how do you think Andy will feel about you telling them that you know he's been in your room."
"I like your style. You're right there. He'll be terrified."
While Andy's fate was being sealed, Kelly, Michelle and Nikki had been trying to sort out some details of the event and the teams of girls.
"On Sunday, when the youth club meets, I think we need to get the girls together so they can form teams and decide who they want to work on," said Kelly in a business-like way. "Then we can let the boys know."
"What if the boys flatly refuse?" Nikki asked doubtfully.
"Well, I expect some will need a bit of persuading. Any boy with a sister or girlfriend will be a pushover because she is bound to know some guilty secret. And if a boy does refuse, even after persuasion, it will be his loss."
The meeting was interupted by the sound of a car horn.
"Oh that'll be my dad," said Nikki, "come on."
The girls left the village hall and Nikki's dad locked the hall door as the girls all piled into his MPV.
Chapter Two
Sunday evening the teenage members of the youth club assembled in the village church hall at 7:30 as usual. There between 20 and 30 regular members, with slightly more girls than boys. Groups of youngsters were preparing for the evening, getting out the table tennis table, organising the music system and so on. Once a sufficient number of people had arrived, Kelly called out, "Can I have your attention everyone." Silence reigned briefly then the table tennis table collapsed with a crash, followed by stifled giggling and muffled swearing from the unfortunate boy on whose shin it had landed.
"Fuck, that hurt," he informed the group.
"Thank you Sam," said Kelly.
Sam examined his wounded shin. "It's bleeding," he announced.
"You'll live," said Kelly unsympathetically. "Can all the girls please go to Room 1 for a quick announcement. We will be back in few minutes to inform the boys."
The girls dutifully trooped out of the hall leaving Sam to show his wound to anyone who showed an interest while other boys re-assembled the table tennis table.
In Room 1, Kelly addressed the meeting, flanked by Karen, Susie, Michelle and Nikki. "At our committee meeting last Thursday, we decided to hold a beauty pageant," she announced, " a beauty pageant with a difference. The contestants will be boys dressed as girls. As you all know, they know nothing of the important things in life, so they will need girls to help them look nice, well presentable at least. Dave and Chris have agreed to participate but Dave has said he doesn't want any help from us. The plan is for teams of girls to prepare their debutante for the pageant on the last Sunday in June. The winning team will be the team with the prettiest and most lady-like debutante. You'll have several weeks, so you can work on costumes and make-up looks for your contestants. Each contestant must have a name; Dave has chosen to be Norma Stitts and Chris will be Norma Snockers. I never knew Norma was such a popular name with boys. I believe one of the contestants will be entering under the name of Mandy Monroe, isn't that right Karen?" Karen nodded in confirmation. Kelly continued, "but I'm not sure she knows it yet. The teams must work out the costumes and supply any make-up or hair-styling as they think fit. So if you can all split into teams of two or three girls. When you have your teams arranged, tell one of us who the team members are and let us know if there is a boy you think you could turn into a gorgeous piece of totty. Otherwise we will decide how to allocate boys."
The girls split into small groups. Susie had told Amy that they planned to work on Andy and would need her help. Most teams of girls selected boys they would like to see dressed as girls. In most cases, the boy selected was the boyfriend of one of the girls in the team and in one or two cases the boy was a younger brother. There remained two teams that could not find a boy with whom to work.
Nikki recorded the names of the team and the boys selected as the teams sorted themselves out. After a few minutes Kelly was able to confirm that were ready to go back into the hall to anounce the forthcoming pageant to the contestants.
When she returned to the hall she was pleased to see that Chris and Dave had arrived.
"Chris, Dave can you come over here please," said Kelly who knew that having the two big rugby players joining in the pageant would help persuade the other boys to participate. Chris and Dave went with Kelly and the rest of the committee members to one end of the hall.
"Right boys, can I have your attention please," called Kelly. Silence slowly fell over the hall. "Your committee has unanimously decided to hold a beauty pageant on the last Sunday in June. This will be a team event and the stars of the how will be you boys." Kelly paused to see the reaction, then she continued. "The winning team will be the one with the prettiest and most lady-like debutante."
"You must think we're all queer," said Sam, "I'm not bloody doing it!"
"Well I'm doing it and I hope you're not calling me queer," said Dave threateningly.
Kelly was thankful that she had the physical support of Dave and Chris. Other boys looked a bit perplexed and some looked interested. "The girls have selected teams and most have selected the boys they would like to work with." Kelly read the list of the girls names and the boys they would be making over. Most boys resigned themselves to their fate without raising too many objections. The girls excitedly explained their plans to the boys they had selected to work with. The conversation between Karen, Susie, Amy and Andy was typical.
"I don't want to make a fool of myself in front of everyone," complained Andy.
"We can train you to be a really convincing girl," said Karen, "you know you like drama at school."
"Yeah, but that's just acting. This is different."
"Of course it isn't different. You'll be acting the part of a pretty girl."
"But I don't want to act the part of a pretty girl."
"So why do you go into my room and read my magazines?" asked Karen menacingly.
"I don't," said Andy blushing crimson.
"You do, I know you do. They are always being left in a different way to how I leave them. And I know it's not Mum, who moves them and why are you blushing?"
Andy looked on the point of tears. Susie tried a different tack.
"It'll be fun," she reassured him. "Chris and Dave are entering, so no-one is going to pick on you. And you'll have fun being a friend with me and Amy as well as Karen."
Andy looked at Amy, who was looking intently at him. She nodded and smiled as their eyes met. Amy was a really slim pretty 14 year old blonde. "Yes I'm really looking forward to this," she said, "we can be like two sets of sisters."
"But I don't want to be a sister," said Andy, trying desperately in the face of overwhelming odds. "what would Mum and Dad say."
"Oh, leave them to me," said Karen with more confidence than she felt. In truth she was wondering how they were going to either conceal Andy's plight from them or, alternatively, how they were going to tell them.
"It'll be worth it," said Amy meaningfully. "I know we'll really enjoy it. Plus you have nice features. They have nice definition and they're nice and symmetrical. You will look good as a girl. You're nice and slim and not too big. And you've got nice hair. Go on, you know you want to." She reached out and stroked his longish hair back over his ear.
Andy finally relented. "Oh, alright then," he said at length. "What am I going to wear?"
"She's starting to think like a girl," grinned Susie, "worried about what she's going to wear."
"Don't call me she," said Andy indignantly.
"Oh yes, we can't call you Andy," Karen suddenly remembered. "We thought we could call you Mandy for the pageant, what do you think?"
"Why can't I be Andi with an I instead of a Y? That's how girls called Andrea would shorten their name."
"It sounds the same. It would confuse you. If you're called Mandy, it will keep reminding you that you need to behave like a girl."
"Oh alright then. I suppose if I'm dressed as a girl, it makes sense to have a girl's name."
"Yay!" Amy gave Andy a big hug. "This is going to be such fun!"
Over the course of the next couple of hours, Karen, Susie and Amy discussed their plans for the evolution of Andy to Mandy. Andy had no problem with the girls filing his nails. Nail varnish was not a subject he knew a lot about, other than girls (and some boys) wore it and it could be removed. It didn't seem to hurt, so why not. At fifteen and fair haired, he did not have a great deal of hair on his legs and was not bothered about shaving his legs. Not being sporty, he had no reason to undress in front of the other boys at school.
There remained the problem of how to break the news to Andy's parents. Andy did not think his mother would mind but his father was old fashioned and conservative. Something as radical as telling him that his son was intending to dress as a girl would be sure to give him apoplexy.
Eventually the evening came to a close and Karen and Andy's dad was due to collect not only Karen and Andy but also give a lift to Susie and Amy, who lived a few houses along the lane from Karen and Andy.
"Hello chaps," said their father, "did you have a good time?"
"Hi Dad," said Karen, "yeah, not bad"
"Hi Dad."
"Hello, Mr Jacobs." Mr Jacobs was a tallish, well-spoken man with greying hair and a moustache.
Amy was too excited to contain herself. "Mr Jacobs, we are going to have and beauty pageant," she announced, before the others could stop her.
"Oh good, I'm sure you'll look lovely," said Mr Jacobs.
"Shh," hissed Karen. Andy's life was flashing before him.
"But I won't be in it," continued Amy, "It's for boys and we're going to make Andy up as a girl."
"Oh well, I'm sure he won't look as lovely as you but I expect it'll be fun."
"You don't mind?" asked Karen incredulously.
"Mind? No why should I mind? It's just a bit of harmless fun. I dressed as girl myself when I was at school."
"What?" Karen was now the one close to apoplexy.
"Oh yes in the 60s and 70s, I went to an all boys school. We did a Gilbert and Sullivan operetta every year and the younger boys, whose voices had not broken, sang the girl's parts."
"What were you dressed as?" asked Susie. Karen and Andy were too stunned by this revelation to speak.
"Well the first year we did The Gondoliers so I had an embroidered white blouse and full embroidered black skirt, about knee length with white petticoats that were a liitle longer than the skirt. The next year we did Ruddigore, so I was a bridesmaid in a high-waisted full length pink dress wih white lace trim, very pretty. And in my third year we did Iolanthe; I was a fairy. My dress had a silver coloured satin bodice and a knee-length, net skirt."
The idea that his father had dressed as a fairy in his schooldays was too much for Andy. He had a fit of the giggles, which Amy found infectious. The two of them were holding each other and crying together in the back of the car.
Susie was still inquisitive. "What about underwear? Did you wear bras and panties?"
"Well we wore bras; we had to have titties of course. Stuffed 'em with rugger socks. The socks were itchy but they created a good effect. I didn't wear girls panties, just my usual boy ones."
"Why didn't they ask a local girl's school to provide the girls?"
"Oh good lord, you couldn't have boys fraternizing with girls. There would be pregnancies, that sort of unpleasantness. There would be irate parents to fend off. Law suits, adverse publicity, all sorts of nastiness."
Mr Jacobs was interrupted by renewed giggling in the back of the car.
"Are you two alright back there?" he enquired.
"Yes Dad." Tears were running down Andy's face. Amy was having difficulty breathing.
"Here we are then," said Mr Jacobs as the car pulled into the drive. He opened the garage door to get the flashlight to walk the Susie and Amy the 100 yards or so to their house.
"Bye Karen, bye Amy,"
"Bye." Karen and Andy went into their house.
"Do you still remember the music, Mr Jacobs?" asked Susie as they walked along the lane.
"Yes, it can be a bit embarrasing knowing the girl's songs but fortunately not many people recognise them these days. And those that do just assume you heard the music on the radio. Fortunately I tend to just hum - I don't walk down the High Street singing 'we are dainty little fairies'. Good evening." A neighbour passed, taking his dog for a walk. Amy was still recovering her composure from the car journey and the middle-aged, bass-baritone confessing he and the two girls were 'dainty little fairies' to a neighbour was too much for her. They reached their house and Mr Jacobs turned back along the lane. He did not witness the hysterical state that Susie and Amy presented to their perplexed mother.
Meanwhile, Karen was telling her mother that her father had dressed as a girl when he was at school.
"He never told me that. A bridesmaid and a fairy? Well I never. I wonder if he still has the photos."
"I bet Granma has," said Karen. "We'll have to ask her!"
At that moment her father entered the house.
"Richard, I never knew you were a fairy," said his wife accusingly.
"Excuse me?" Mr Jacobs was perplexed, he had always been a good and dutiful husband, never stinting on his Saturday night chore, excepting the one week in the month when it was too unpleasant.
"When you were at school. Karen tells me you used to dress as a girl."
"Well yes but only for the school musical things and only until my voice broke."
"But why didn't you tell me."
"Why should I? It was a long time ago and it never seemed relevant."
"And we're going do have a beauty pageant at youth club. Andy's going to be a girl," chipped in Karen gleefully.
"Karen, are we going to be the only ones wearing the pants in this family? The men are going to be wearing dresses." The mother looked at her teenage son, who had been hoping that somehow the severity his future plight was diminishing in the light of his father' long past escapades.
"Well Andy, I hope you do something with your hair and your nails. Come in the kitchen you two and we'll have a nice hot drink and you can tell me all about it. And I haven't finshed talking to you, Richard. You wait in the living room." Mr Jacobs had the look of a schoolboy on his way to the headmaster's study for a beating as he went into the living room, while his wife and two children went into the kitchen.
Mrs Jacobs warmed the milk in a saucepan while she heard the details of the pageant and how Andy was going to become Mandy over the course of the next month and a half.
"Ok Andy," she said, when she had grasped the form of the contest and the preparation. "I don't mind you doing this. In fact I think it will be good for you to understand how girls think and feel over the next few weeks. But I am going to lay own some rules, for your own protection as much as anything. Rule one, you will never be alone with a girl in her home unless it's here with Karen. Rule two, if you go out anywhere dressed as a girl, you will dress completely as a girl. Rule three, you will not lead any boy to believe you are a girl. Rule four, before you let your hair grow any longer, you get it trimmed to remove the split ends and you keep it clean and conditioned. Now will you promise me you will obey those rules."
"Yes mum, I promise." Andy had no problem with any of these rules, they would have no effect in stopping him doing any of his usual activities.
"Good boy, or is it good girl now?"
"I'm still a boy. I don't want to be a girl. It's just dressing up and having a bit of fun with the girls. And I hope I'll be seeing more of Amy."
"Amy? Susie's sister? Oh I see, she's the reason you're doing this is she? Well make sure you remember rule one. You're not to be alone with her while you're dressed as a girl. Now finish your drink and off to bed. You've got school tomorrow."
"Yes mum, good-night mum."
"Good-night, Andy, sleep well."
"You too, Karen, off you go. And I hope this doesn't end it tears for anyone."
"Oh no, it's just a bit of fun. Dave and Chris will get their rugby mates to sort out any problems of boys being picked on - if they can't handle it themselves. Good-night mum and go easy on dad."
"Oh yes, your father the former fairy. Thank you for reminding me."
With the her mother put the cups in the sink and went to the living room to continue her interrogation of his teenage transvestism some thirty years previously.
Karen and Andy lay in bed for a while before they got off to sleep, each thinking their separate thoughts of what the next few weeks would bring.
