Girlie Boarding School Initiation

"Will someone get the phone?" shouted Katie Sanders. It seemed that her younger sister, Heather, was deeply into reading her book and wasn't about to get up. Heather had only two interests this summer, reading books and playing with her Barbie dolls.

"I'll get it.", answered Katie's younger brother Michael.

"Katie, it's for you, some girl from your new school."

"Thanks. Hello. Yes, this is Katie. Oh, hi Allison. Sure, I remember you from Ivy Academy's shadow day last year. Following you around that day, going to your classes with you, eating lunch and watching you at your after school activities helped me to decide that this is the school for me."

"Well that's great. I'm happy to tell you that we have been paired as Big Sister/ Little Sister." said Allison Scott. "We really want the freshies to get off to a good start and feel that they are part of the school right from the beginning. We've got a lot of activities planned for this week and throughout the school year. Did you get the information letter on this?"

"Yes, and it sounds awesome. I can't wait to start."

"Remember to bring the items that are asked for on your list. The dress is casual tomorrow, tee shirt and jeans if you want. We'll get into the dress code later on this week. By the way, was that your brother who answered the phone?"

"Yes, that was Michael."

"Oh. We like to include all your family in some of our school's activities. Don't say anything to him, but tomorrow we'll discuss a plan where he may be able to help you out. I've got the car tomorrow, so I'll stop by in the morning to pick you up around 8:30. I'm going to also pickup Sarah Bailey and her"little sister" Amy Clark. I understand she was in your class this year. "

"Yes, I'm glad I'm going to see a friendly face tomorrow."

"Don't worry. Everyone's a little scared when they jump into a new situation. We hope we can make it easy for all our little sisters starting this week. I'll see you tomorrow around 8:30. Bye."

The next day Allison arrived promptly at 8:30. Katie gathered up her things and said goodbye to her mom. Michael was sitting at his video game but got up to look at who had stopped by. The two other girls in the car smiled and waved at him. Goofy girls, he thought to himself and went back to his game. In about a half an hour, the girls arrived at the school.

"Welcome to Ivy Academy. I'm Allison Scott, president of student government. Our other leaders today are Katie Copeland, editor of our yearbook, the Echo, and our newspaper, the Ivy Leaves. Another leader is Liz McDonnell, the head of our award winning Drama group, the Ivy Players. Our fourth leader is Robin Segler, one of our four sport athletes in basketball, soccer, volleyball and softball. All your big sisters will also be helping us today."

"We've done a lot of research on freshman orientation and initiation programs. We've studied the traditions of our school as well as what other girl schools have successfully used. The activities this week are called the Summer Bridge. We're going to do some get acquainted activities today, discuss some of the school's traditions, give you a tour of our buildings and grounds and hopefully answer your questions. Tomorrow we'll have some outdoor activities and we plan to use our new aquatic center, so bring your suits. There's a special competition planned that I'll explain later."

"As you know, Ivy Academy was started as a girl's boarding school. Today about 65% of our girls are full time boarders and 35% are day students. The boarders reside on campus in several types of accommodations from renovated dorm rooms to gracious Georgian houses. Most girls share a room but some singles are available.

If you are a boarder, you should have received your boarding assignments. We'll have some special sessions just for you. There are some curfew rules and other rules for leaving campus that will be discussed. There are some weekly inspections of rooms to check for cleanliness as well as observation of decorating rules and fire safety codes.

The boarders' day starts at 7 a.m. although many get up earlier for athletics, music and other activities. You'll meet your houseparent or parents and their residential assistants or, as we call them, house captains. Juniors and seniors apply, are interviewed and then selected each year as house captains. Katie, Liz, Robin and I are house captains this year. We will live with some of you and will be mentoring, supervising, supporting and encouraging you. Boarding students have an opportunity to develop some skills for independent living as well as sharing with others

"We try to integrate experiences of both boarders and day students. Boarders will often share their housing facilities with our day students to study, eat or just hang out. The laundry facilities are also available to all. Day students may sometimes arrange for overnight or short term accommodations, such as for an athletic event or extracurricular activity. Sometimes a spare room is available, other times you can bring your sleeping bag. On the other hand, boarding students have the opportunity of spending some time at a day student's home for a weekend. We want everyone to feel that they are part of one community."

"Here is a quick history of our school. Edith Whitter founded the school in 1905. It was modeled on the philosophy and curriculum taught in a proper English school named Braermoor Female Academy. The property of our existing school was originally the estate of Archibald and May Smith. He was a railroad investor. Until the 1960's there was a rail branch that ran adjacent to the property line. The station house was modified and is now used as part of our athletic storage facilities. They donated their estate to the school in 1929. Since their estate was famous for its ivy gardens the school was renamed as the Ivy Academy for Young Women. As other buildings were added there was a conscious effort to maintain the style of the original architecture."

"The adjacent properties of James B. Morford were donated in the 1950s. The former mansions, carriage house, and servants' quarters were renovated to become student housing and the home for our administrator's family.

The stables were maintained and, as some of you may know, we have one of the best equestrian programs in the area."

"As you tour our buildings you'll note the great craftsmanship and detail in the hardwood floors, the entrances, the windows and stained glass. There are several courtyards and beautifully maintained gardens and athletic fields."

"The late 1980s and 1990s saw the construction of our residential dorm and a science and technology center. Our state of the art fitness and aquatic center were just completed last year. You'll get to experience them all this week."

"Now let's talk about our big sister/ little sister program and discuss some of the rumors you may have heard about freshman initiation. Let's make it clear from the start that we want to keep the initiation in the spirit of fun, respect and dignity. We are very sensitive to any activities that might be considered hazing. Our purpose is to welcome you and to share our school spirit and our experiences. We want to join the new and the old into one group. We want to show you that you belong here and we want to make it a positive experience. We hope that you will meet new people and make long lasting friendships."

"Now, let's handle some of the rumors. We have hear some rumors such as shaving off your eyebrows, leaving you in the woods at night alone after midnight, covering you with eggs or mud, over applying bad makeup and making you dress in public in mismatched fashions. These things will clearly not happen. I wouldn't like any of that and neither would you."

"Let's talk about what you can expect. I won't spoil the surprises, but I can give you some hints. Some will occur this week and some will happen throughout the school year. Some are shared by the whole school like pizza parties, cookouts, picnics, pep rallies, bonfires, slumber parties, sports activities and shopping trips to the mall."

"There are some traditions that only involve freshmen and the seniors. Some of these activities in the past have included freshmen singing, chanting and cheering at any time when asked by a senior, request to cook a meal, clean our rooms and do our laundry."

"You may be asked to group together and put on a show with skits and dances or demonstrate your sense of fashion in a different or unusual way. Since you are now little fishes in a pig pond, there might be some fashion costumes with a nautical theme. As our little sisters you may be dressed as frilly little girls in party dresses, pigtails, ribbons and bows carrying your cute dollies. Remember, this is in the spirit of fun and each activity will only last for one day. If at any time you feel uncomfortable you don't have to become involved. Don't worry, we understand."

"We are planning on revising an old activity that we discovered while looking through yearbooks and school newspapers. It seems that a number of years ago there was a prettiest brother contest. Apparently each freshman had to convince their brother or another male to dress up as girls and have their pictures taken. The pictures were submitted and voted on and the top five winners had to appear fully dressed at school for the final selection. From the few old pictures we found, it was almost impossible to tell that the winner was really a male.'

"We don't want to do the same thing, but here is what we had in mind. Remember, it is OK if you do not wish to participate. You will be asked to perform various initiation activities and we thought that these "young ladies" would become your assistants. They might help you out with some event or maybe be asked to substitute for you. Of course, they would be dress as young girls and have to act the role at all times they were here. "

"We would like to get at least 10 assistants, if possible. Now, how could you tell if some boy might be willing to do this? Well, think about it for a second. Is there any brother, relative or neighbor that somehow always manages to be dressed as a girl at Halloween or for a costume party? Have you ever found your clothes drawers or closets slightly rearranged from the last time you checked them? Have you actually caught you brother in your clothes or has he asked or have you offered to help him dress? Maybe you haven't seen any of this but do you wonder what it might be like for your brother to see the world from your eyes and your clothes?"

"Anyway, here's the plan. We are going to have a soccer match tomorrow, the boys against the girls. As you know we have some very good teams here. Robin has been all conference the last two years. I can't guarantee that we will win, but there is a good chance that it could happen. We make a bet that the losing team has to do whatever the other team wants for a week. I know it might be a mistake if we lose, but I'm confident and I'm going to play myself. Most males have this ego thing and would take the bet. They also have some sense of honor and I suspect that if they lose, they would carry out and honor their agreement."

"Take a few minutes to discuss it and I'll ask for a show of hands later on today."

There were a few more team building activities that day and a lunch was enjoyed by all. When asked if anyone agreed with the earlier bet, about 15 hands went up. "Good, let's try it. Ask your opponents to show up at about 10 o'clock. We'll start our session tomorrow at 8:30. It will give us some time to talk and show you what our team can do. Does anyone need a ride home today?"

When Allison dropped Katie off at home, one of the first things she did was ask Michael if he'd like to play in the soccer game tomorrow. She described the stakes of the game, but didn't mention anything about the dressing up part.

" Hey, I'll be ready to play. It will be one more chance to show that boys are superior to the girls."

"But what if you lose?"

"The chances of that are a million to one, but sure I'd honor the bet. Besides what could you possibly make us do that would be so bad?" said Michael.

"OK, we'll see you tomorrow. Good luck."

At 8:30 the big sisters/little sisters met. They looked at a DVD that explained some of the school traditions. There were scenes of the fall family weekend, the variety show, Junior Halloween lunch, senior carols, pep rallies, fashion shows, spirit week, Hollywood day, founder's day, the ring ceremony, senior dinner, international festival, sports day, service projects and graduation.

After the DVD, the girls went out to the soccer field. The older girls had selected a team of some of the best school players. Just watching them practice was enough to convince the little sisters that they would be a seeing their first Ivy victory.

Michael had asked his mother if she could take him and two of his friends to the game around 10 o'clock.

"Yes, I could drop you off. It sounds like fun. Heather and I are going to the library anyway. Give me a call on my cell phone to let me know when I can pick you up. I'm glad you're helping out your sister. You two don't seem to get along as well as you used to. By the way I hear that they have a very good team. I hope you're ready."

The boys started to arrive around ten. They had 12 players. "Thanks guys for accepting the challenge. I want to make sure that you understand that the losers have to do whatever the winners want for a full week." said Robin Segler.

Michael acted as the spokesman. "Yeah, we understand and we'll be happy to tell you what to do for a week once we beat you."

The game was close. Even though the boys were good players, they were not really an organized team and the girls won by a score of 5 to 3.

"Good game, it's been nice playing with you. We'll see you back here tomorrow morning at 10 to settle the bet. Just to let you know, you will have to workout with us and then go swimming with us later."

Michael and the boys accepted that and they thought at least the next day wasn't going to be so bad after all.

The next day the girls arrived at the usual 8:30. They were asked to be in the official P.E. outfit, basically shorts and a tee shirt. The main topics were the school's athletic teams and the extra curricular programs. There were members from each of the organized clubs and team sports. Each of the girls was encouraged to be physically fit and to become a member of a team or organization. There seemed to be something for everyone. The major sports were volleyball, field hockey, cross country, tennis, swimming, basketball, golf, track and field, softball, cheerleading and of course, soccer. There were varsity, junior varsity and freshmen levels of competition and intramural teams were also active. They toured the fitness and aquatic centers and were impressed. There were many other social and academic clubs that highlighted their organizations.

Michael had told his mother that they had lost the game and asked her to drop him and two of his friends at the school. "I told you that they were good. Now you have to live up to your end of the bargain. Perhaps this workout might help you to get into as good as shape as the girls", she joked.

"Welcome again to Ivy Academy. We're glad to see that 10 of you are here to honor your bet. As you know, since you lost, you'll be participating in some of our activities this week and a couple of days during the school term. Today we're highlighting sports and physical fitness so you'll be working out and swimming with us."

"Before you get changed for the workout, we also want to change your name." Each of the boys had to pick a name out of a fishbowl. Michael picked the name Rachael. "This will be what you will be called when with us. We have a set of workout clothes for you to put on. Please go to the locker room and change into the official PE uniform. Put everything on. You may use your own shoes.

The boys hesitantly entered the girl's locker room. There was a general changing area with benches, lockers and some separate individual changing areas. Above one of these was a sign with the name Rachael written on it. Michael assumed this was for him. He was startled to see what was there but he said to himself, a bet is a bet.

The shirt and shorts were very similar to what a guy would wear, except for the school logos, but there were two items that froze him for a few seconds. On the pile was a pair of Jockey for Her pink cotton briefs and, what was scarier, a white sports bra from Limited Too. He hesitated and thought about walking out of all this but some strange sense of honoring a commitment and another strange sense of what it might feel like keep him there.

After a few minutes, he decided to go through with it. He took off his clothes and stepped into the briefs. They were snug with elastic at the waist and leg openings. There was just a hint of lace. The sports bra was something entirely new. He noticed there was a blue trim on the straps. The packaging said cup size AA and band size 34. He put his arms through the straps and tugged it down over his head. He thought that it would never fit. After a few moments of tugging it over his shoulders, he adjusted it across his chest. He felt an unusual sensation as it was holding him in, snug but not tight.

Next he put on the green silky shorts. As he looked closely the word Ivy was silk screened across the rear. He stepped into them and adjusted the elastic waist band. There was a matching gray short sleeved shirt with the school emblem on the chest. He put on the pair of white ankle length athletic socks and then put on and tied his own gym shoes.

After some time, he heard them calling their new names. He wondered if anyone else had changed like he had. He soon found out as they all began to step into the main room. They were all pretty much dressed the same and he could even see the straps of the bras under their shirts. Most of them appeared as embarrassed as he was but he thought he saw a couple of smiles also. At that moment they made a promise that this would never get out to anyone.

The instructions were to all line up on the baseline and when called, they would take a step forward and yell their name and the school's name three times. When Michaels turn came, He yelled out", Rachael. Ivy, Ivy, Ivy."

After they were all introduced the other girls burst into applause. Except for the leaders, all were identically dressed. There was one more thing before they began. All the assistants with longer hair were given scrunchies and were helped into putting their hair in a ponytail. Those with shorter hair were given a hair band to keep the hair off of their face.

"We are going to divide the little sisters and their assistant little sisters into groups of six. Each group will be lead by one of our cheerleaders. We will go through a program of warm-ups and stretches that are very similar to what the cheerleaders do throughout the year. "Whitney Carlson would direct Rachael's group.

While all this was going on one of the girls from the yearbook staff was taking photographs.

"We'll start with warm-ups. The purpose is to elevate your body temperature, promote blood flow and to prepare your body to work. Begin with a few laps around the gym."

When they returned, Whitney continued. "Line up in three rows of two. We want to use the large muscles so were going to move our arms and legs. Watch me and follow along. While we're doing the movements I want you to chant "Go fight, win" and "Fire up" as cheers. Ready, begin."

"Next we're going to do ten minutes of stretching. Hold each stretch for 30 counts. Everyone counts out loud. Don't bounce during the stretches and watch your breathing. Start on the floor. We'll stretch the hamstrings and work on the gluteus maximus. Put your legs and toes straight out. And pull your toes toward your body. Next, for the inside thighs and lower back, straddle your legs to one side, point your toes and put your arm overhead. As always, reverse the moments for your other side. Now lie on your back, bend your knees close to your chest one leg next to the other and gently pull yourself up."

"Stand up. This is for your shoulders and chest. Clasp hands together in front of your body and pull forward. Repeat with arms overhead, then lean to one side and with your arms clasp your hands behind your back. Did you recognize this as a common cheerleader move? We are almost finished. Now from a standing position, lift your leg back and grab your foot, knee bent and hold for a ten count. This is great for the quadriceps. Let me hear you. Lastly, do some head rolls; tilt your head toward your shoulders and reverse. This is to stretch the muscles in your neck. Relax. Grab a towel. Get some water. Cool down. Nice job." They went and sat on the bleachers.

Rachael said that during the year they then would do some dance aerobics set to music. It was a chance to be creative and get a workout at the same time. This would be followed by alternating days of weight training. She said we wouldn't be doing it today, but maybe next time, whatever that meant. Michael/ Rachael now understood why cheerleaders were in such great shape. He saw how hard they had to work to maintain it.

For the end of this workout they went outside to the track. "Don't worry we're a good distance from the road here. If anyone sees us they will assume the girls are just getting in some workouts and conditioning over the summer." One of the girls from the track team set up a 400 and 800 meter challenge. In several heats each girl was timed. When all were finished, it was obvious that they had all worked up a sweat.

 

Robin Siegler called the girls together. "That's great. We had a great workout. Now it's time to cool off in our pools. Those of you that don't have the proper swimsuits, that means all of our assistants, will have to follow me, the rest of get changed and try the indoor pool. "

They followed her just outside the indoor pool changing area. There on tables were a lot of swimsuits. "We want you to pick a swimsuit. You notice that most of them are one piece suits, although there are a couple of two piece tankinis. You'll need a skirted suit or a pair of swim shorts to wear over your suit. You'll also need a swim cap just like our competitive teams wear at swim meets."

There was a choice of many suits and two or three of each type. Like much of the clothing that the assistants would wear, some swimsuits were donated by the other girls, some were from resale shops and some were from the stores that some of the girls worked in at the local malls. There was a one piece dark blue Y back suit from Lands End. Next was a black Speedo of nylon/Lycra with a scooped neck, a racer back with full front beige liner. A criss-cross suit with stretchy straps and a layered skirt was on that table

The next table had a red Ralph Lauren one piece racer back tank swimsuit of polyester and spandex with a coordinating sarong. There were also a couple of flower patterned tankinis that, although two pieces, looked like they would cover a lot. Another was an LL Bean French blue one piece T back style with full front lining and a pair of matching beach shorts. Also there was a one piece Old Navy tank with stretchy nylon/spandex in a tropical flowered print with solid elastic trim along the scooped neck, the racer back and the leg openings.

The third table had various cover-ups of swim shorts, skirts or terry skorts which were shorts attached beneath a skirt.

They made their choices and went off to change. The pool changing area also had some separate stalls. Rachael chose the black Speedo. He put his legs through the openings and pulled the straps up over his chest. He took a few steps to see how it fit. As he twisted and turned it did not seem like the suit was tugging or pulling. He stepped into a matching pair of black skorts. Finally he pulled the swim cap on his head and the stepped out into the open area.

"Well, this is very embarrassing, but at least it's not too bad. It could be worse. They haven't dressed us as cheerleaders, ballerinas or in frilly little girl party dresses." The others reluctantly agreed. They all walked out and stood at the edge of the pool as the other girls giggled.

"We'll do a few things here in the indoor pool and then head out to the outdoor pool. Watch yourselves when we go outside, you may want to put on some sunscreen. You don't want to get some unusual tan lines."

They swam some laps, did some practice dives and then played some pool games. The school photographer was also there as she would be most of the time. They next went out to the outdoor poll and swam a little and lounged on the pool chairs.

After the swim, they were all given short robes that are used by the swim team at meets and all were directed to the cafeteria where they finished up some pizza. They bought sodas and juice from the nearby vending machines.

Although it seemed strange and none would admit it, but most of the assistants thought that they had some fun today. The boys changed first. There were given a green Ivy sports bag and they told to put their swimwear it and their PE uniforms from this morning. They were also told to wash everything from the undies to the swimsuits and bring it all back tomorrow.

 

Later that evening, Katie stepped in to Michael's room. "Michael, all the girls really want to thank you and the others for helping us this week. We think you all are totally special and it is really cool and brave of you all. We have decided to keep it just between us and we all promised to keep it secret, so you don't have to worry that someone will find out. I won't even tell Mom and Heather. By the way, I'll wash your new laundry if you don't mind. I'll fold it and put the bag back in your room by morning." Michael thanked her but he was still worried about what he had gotten into with that bet.

The next morning Michael was waiting for his mother and his sister Heather to come to the car. He was carrying his new gym bag.

"Still working off that bet? We drove by the school yesterday but all we could see were the girls out at the pool. You must have been inside. Did you notice Katie in her school uniform before she left this morning? She really looked cute. Heather and I are off to the mall today. She has to check the doll shop for some Barbie clothes that she special ordered, but I know uniforms and doll clothes are something that you'd never give a second thought. Call me when it's time to leave."

 

The boys were lead off to the theater's dressing rooms after they arrived. "Today our little sister's are dressed in their official school uniforms. This is the day we discuss the academic programs of our school. We'll start off with a little history and tradition of our school uniform as well as some other rules. We'll then meet and discuss some of the requirements and classes that are offered. This will be followed by a tour of the school and a change for our little sisters to wander through the school and try to follow the schedule of classes with our help. We'll finally finish with a picnic lunch and you will join us ", said Liz McDonald.

"You're going to part of the uniform history lesson. Several years ago during one of our school's anniversaries, they asked the alumnae for any of the old uniforms that might still be around. A costume company also offered to make some copies of uniforms that they needed. We've already decided which uniforms you'll wear, so off to the dressing rooms."

They all changed into the uniforms. Rachael was to model one of the original uniforms. It was more like a dress and it included some old fashioned underwear. This time some of the older girls from the drama club helped them into some light makeup, just a bit of blush, a swipe of mascara and some light lip gloss. The girls also helped with the hair styling for the time periods. They used some falls and wigs on some of the boys. When everyone was ready they were brought up to the backstage area.

While they were changing the other girls discussed the purposes and traditions of wearing uniforms. "Uniforms are a way to help establish the identity of our school. By having the same look, we are all united as one and connected as one group. On the other hand, when you wear your uniform outside of school you stand out from other girls. Many people comment on how nice we look. You will become proud of your uniform. Wearing a uniform helps you focus more on who you are and not so much how you look. You don't have to spend time each morning trying to decide what to wear that day. Believe it or not, wearing a uniform can save you money that can be spent on clothes for outside of school.

"Although the uniforms are pretty much the same, you'd be surprised what a few accessories can do to give you a unique look. There are some restrictions. Your skirt must be at least finger tipped length. Your blouse must be tucked into your waistband and loose enough not to pull across your chest. Socks must be a coordinated color and cover the ankle or be knee highs. No open toed or sandals may be worn. Hair ribbons or slides must match the uniform colors or may be in the schools colors. No jewelry other than a watch and single stud earrings only worn in the ears are permissible. "

Dark knee high socks, dark or white tights may be worn. Shoes are to be lace ups or buckles with a short heel.

"There are also some guidelines for clothes that are worn on a free dress day or after the academic day. In general the look must be clean, moderate and appropriate. No tube tops, halter tops or single straps. Spaghetti straps are allowed if worn under another shirt. No midriffs or extremely short skirts or short shorts. No bellies or bras should show. In public areas appropriate blue jeans, sweatshirts, and school tee shirts are acceptable."

"Before the show begins, were going to give you a few quick lessons on how to walk like a girl ", said Liz McDonald. "Boys carry their weight at their shoulders and upper body. They take heavy steps and fall forward when they walk. As a girl you will need to redistribute the weight to your hips. Keep your chin up, your shoulders back, your chest out, your stomach in and pull yourself forward. Hold your palms slightly forward and swing your arms from the elbows and not your shoulders. Take lighter steps. Your hips will move, but don't exaggerate the movement. You want graceful smooth movements"

After some practice, the fashion show began. One of the girls from the Speech Team narrated. As the different uniforms were described, the little sister's assistants would walk across the stage, stop at stage center, turn and then move across to the other side.

Rachael modeled one of the first uniforms. It was a light green gingham dress with side seam pockets, white trim on the sleeves and a tapered neck with a pointed collar. It buttoned at the front and had a tie belt at the back. Underneath were a matching cotton chemise and a pair of pantalettes covered by a cotton petticoat with just a bit of lace at the hem. The narrator made her twirl so that the girls could catch a glimpse of these. She wore brown striped stockings and a pair of high top brown leather laced shoes. On her head was a straw boater type hat with a matching ribbon band. She wore a pair of white gloves, which like the hat, were worn on special occasions.

The next girl wore a pale blue dress with a belt and wore black stockings, black gloves and a black blazer with the school's crest on it. She also had a similar straw boater hat.

The 1940's uniform modeled was a dark green box pleated skirt with a cream colored blouse with a peter pan collar, a navy tie, a dark green blazer and brown stockings. A beret replaced the boater.

In the 60's with miniskirts becoming popular, the girls often rolled up their skirts at the waist. It was demonstrated how teachers would make the girls kneel on the floor and the hem of the skirt had to reach the floor. Skirts with sharp pleats that brushed against the knees were harder to roll up, but that didn't stop most of the girls from trying.

The 1980's uniform was a gray skirt lined in shiny slippery silk. A long or short sleeved blue blouse with a pointed collar was worn under a dark blue blazer or cardigan sweater with the school crest. Blue knee socks finished this look.

In The 90's and up to today, the skirts had a herringbone pattern and there was one color for each class, blue, green, maroon or brown. A light colored blouse or polo was acceptable. A V neck or cardigan sweater replaced the blazer. Knee highs or white or colored coordinated tights were worn.

At the end, all the girls were asked to come up on stage and stand proudly in their uniforms. The big sisters all applauded. Rachael and the others were lead back to the dressing room and the other girls went back to their seats.

"While your helpers are changing we'll go over some of the required courses for all students at the school. When they rejoin us we'll take a walkthrough of your schedule and help you find your classrooms and lockers.

"Let's go over the curriculum. These are required: 4 years of English, 4 years of Math, 3 years of Science with one Biology and one Chemistry, 3 years of History, 3 years of one foreign language or 2 years each of two foreign languages, 2 years of art either the fine arts or performing arts, and 4 years of physical education, health, or team sports."

"Within our arts program there are performances in playing or singing of music and also dance, featuring ballet, modern and jazz. Sometimes we join with Andrews Academy and combine our choruses and orchestra for some public performances". Andrews used to be a military school, but now was considered one of the best prep schools for boys in the state. Katie remembered that Michael had been on a few overnight camping trips that the school ran.

"There are tutors and study areas available for the boarders and the day students. The new boarding students have a supervised study time. You can always ask your Big Sisters and we'll do our best to get you help in any way we can." They continued the discussion of what a school day was like and what to expect each semester.

Rachael listened as the older girls explained what was next for them. "You all did a great job in the uniform fashion show. Thanks a lot. You're now going to change into a more standard uniform and then you'll follow our little sisters around the school building. In the theater's costume room we happen to have some school skirts that were donated by last years graduating class. We also have a lot of school blouses and socks for you. When you get finished, come out and find a pair of appropriate shoes. Leave the uniforms you now have on the hangers in the dressing rooms. By the way, you'll also notice we have some new underwear for you. This will give you a little more shape. Now, get going."

Rachael went into the curtained area underneath a sign with her name. The skirt and blouse were hanging up. There on the bench were three packages. The first was a no hose boy cut panty shaper with tummy control in a nude color shade. The package promised a slimmer look with no panty lines. It also said a knit panel would tone the tummy for a smooth silhouette under your clothes. He pulled them on. They were very snug and he could see that it would give him a smooth shape underneath the skirt. The second package was a Fabulous Fit Satin Teen bra. This one said the cups are two way stretch fabric with light foam padding. It said it was perfect for the modest teen with a seamless look and comfort under your clothes. He put his arms through the two straps and it took several attempts to connect the hooks in the back. He then adjusted the straps. As he looked down he could definitely see a little more shape than was there before.

 

The pleated skirt was a red and black plaid. He stepped into it and pulled up the side zipper and buttoned the one button. The hem was definitely above his knees. He adjusted the waist band. He could feel the pleats brush against his leg. The light blue blouse was short sleeved with a peter pan collar. He buttoned it up and tucked it into the skirt. He could see that the blouse was a little tighter across the chest than he thought. The third package was a pair of white knee high cable knit socks that he quickly pulled up his legs. As he looked into the dressing room mirror a school girl looked back at him.

The girls were called back out and they tried on pairs of school shoes. Rachael noticed that all the other must have been also given the shapers and bras. "One of the older girls commented that their look was now more natural for a girl their age. One more stop at the costume room and some of the girls had hair extensions or even some bangs added and attached. All were combed out and a single ribbon was applied. The boys were still embarrassed by the situation and didn't have much to say to each other. As they filed out into the auditorium a large round of applause and more than a few giggles could be heard

The groups were lead over to the classroom buildings. They then walked from room to room following the little sisters daily classroom schedules. Together everyone was checking locations and was given some suggestions and possible different routes in going from class to class. Next came lunch. Finally, the little sisters were sent back to follow their schedule and retrace their steps on their own. It could be seen that even with this practice, it takes some time to find your way in a new building.

The groups met one more time for a short wrap up and to answer any questions. The big sisters and little sisters left first. The others were told to wait.

"Another great day, thanks so much. Please go to the dressing rooms and return all the skirts, blouses socks and shoes. Also leave any hairpieces or wigs. If you feel like it you can wear your makeup home. If not, after you've changed come to the makeup room and well help you remove it. Your new undies are to be washed tonight and you are to wear them here tomorrow under the school Tee you were given earlier this week. You will be going on a little trip with us tomorrow. Michael returned his wardrobe and stopped to take off his makeup. He got a ride home with one of the other boys.

Later that evening, Katie walked into Michael's room. "Come on little sister Rachael, I'm going to give you a lesson in laundering our delicates. "Ssshh, don't let Mom and Heather hear you say that." said Michael.

"Don't worry, they have gone out together, we are alone for a while, come on down to the laundry room and bring your sports bag."

Michael was familiar with the laundry room. His mom had a motto; if you wear it then you wash it.

Katie had him take out his bra and shaper. She also had a few things of her own.

"The best way to wash our undies is by hand. We'll fill the sink with cold water and add some Woolite. Woolite is a mild detergent especially designed for our frillies. Now put everything into the sink and we'll let them soak for about five minutes. After that you'll rinse them out again with cold water. You can then gently squeeze the water out. Don't twist or wring them out. I think it is better to avoid the dryer, so hang them on the drying rack. They should be dry by tomorrow morning."

Michael/Rachael had often seen underwear hanging on this rack but this time they were his undies. Heather also told Michael that to do a quick dry you can set the hair dryer at low heat and blow it over the items but not to hold it too close.

The next morning the family was sitting down for breakfast. "I'm taking Heather for her dancing lessons and to the orthodontist this morning. Does anyone need a ride?"

Katie answered," No thanks, Allison is going to pick me up again. Today is the last day for our summer orientation. I think were all going to the mall."

"That sounds great. By the way, I took your undies off the drying rack and put them on the folding table. Every time I look you have bought something new. We'll I guess a girl can't have enough frilly delicates."

"How about you Michael?"

Michael hesitated. Had his mom found out about everything? Was she talking about his new underwear?

"I said, Michael do you need a ride?"

Michael was relieved, she didn't know. " No thanks, I guess me and the guys will just hang around the park."

"OK, well we'll probably be back after 1 o'clock." answered his mom.

After about a half hour Heather and her Mom left in the car. Katie said," This will work out for everyone. Allison is coming by with Annie and Becky and we can all ride together. Get upstairs and change. I'm already ready."

Becky was the name that Jack Martin had chosen a few days ago. Michael knew him from school but they never hung out together. That is until all this got started.

Michael stopped in the laundry room and picked up his things. He went back upstairs to his room. He squeezed into the shaper and again had trouble hooking the bra. He stepped into his jeans and pulled the gray T shirt over his head. As he looked down to his chest he noticed that this bra gave him much more of a shape than the sports bra did. Allison pulled up into the drive way. The girls exchanged greetings. Annie sat up front with Allison. Rachael and Becky only nodded to each other. Katie sat between them in the back seat.

"Welcome back for your last day of summer orientation. We hope this has been a great week for all of you. We have had a lot of fun putting everything together for you. We hope you have learned a lot and are starting to feel part of our big family."

"Today we are going to the mall together for some shopping. We're going to come back afterwards and spend a little more time at the pool. The little sisters can all go to the cafeteria for some juice and bagels. When our newest girls are ready well call you to go to the buses. OK, little Ladies, you know who I mean. Let's head over to the dressing rooms once again."

 

"This is also your last day for this week. Remember though your bet was for a week, so you still owe us a few days. We'll fill you in on that later. You all will be going to the mall with us. We are going to fix you up a bit so that anyone would see you as just another teen girl at the mall. We will keep close to you and cover for you if you need it, but other than that you'll experience what is like to be a young female set loose among all those stores. Keep your eyes open and watch what is going on because you may be asked later to do some shopping on your own. "

"Most of you will be in the typical teen summer mall outfit, which is jeans and a T shirt with a pair of flip flops.

A couple of you will be a little bit dressier in skirts and a nice top. We want you to have some variety also."

Rachael was given a pair of capris and a dark tank top. The flip flops were just like wearing sandals. He was glad that he didn't get the skirt. Becky/Jack was one of the lucky ones. He was given a skirt and top. One of the girls in skirts was given some dark tights to wear. Becky was given a pair of Silk Reflections pantyhose. When he came out with them on, you could see the hair on his legs showing through. This was not very girly. After a few minutes one of the girls came up with some Nair and after some instructions, he was sent off to the showers. When he returned, his legs were quite smooth. The girls also came up with a cover story in case some one asked Jack about his new look. Jack was on the swim team and he was to mention that his coach had said that having smooth legs was one way to pick up a few seconds in the pool. It sounded like something a coach might say.

"We're going to spend a little more time on makeup and hair today. Again pay attention, watch and listen. You may be asked to do this on your own. By the time you're finished your own mothers won't recognize you. In fact some of us may be jealous of the cute new girls."

They were brought back to the director's chairs in front of the mirrors and lights. Some of the girls that had done makeup in some of the theater productions were helping out. "Remember makeup depends upon what type you wear, when you wear it and how much you're going to wear. Start with some tinted moisturizer. It can even off the color in your face as well as a base for other makeup. It will give you a soft glow. Next is a bit of sheer blush on your cheeks. Now for a little dab of mascara on your eyelashes and just a hint of soft color across your eyelids, nothing really dramatic. We'll finish your look with some scented and flavored Caboodles lip gloss. It will add mostly shine and a little color. Most parents don't seem to mind this type of light, cute, girlie look. For a special treat we're going to do your nails, all of them. This is a very pale pink color. It will match well with your other makeup .You are all very quiet. When we have our makeup done, there is usually a nonstop conversation going on discussing styles and fashions as well as the latest gossip. Since this is the first time for most of you, you'll learn. Although, I suspect some of you might have played with makeup before."

Michael thought what she said was true. Although he wouldn't admit it to anyone, there were several times when Heather was first starting to use makeup that somehow she had him putting on makeup and nail polish. He knew that there were some pictures of it somewhere but at this point it didn't bother him much.

The last stop was for hair styling. With a little combing, brushing and a few extensions when they were finished, it was really easy to see that these were some very nice looking girls. The school photographer grabbed a few shots of the lovely young misses.

One of the girls called Rachael over. She gave Rachael a pair of very feminine small rimless glasses with oval shaped lenses. "These are from our props department. The lenses are just pure glass, no prescription. I think that make a fashion statement, give you a cute look and can help you focus on being your girlish self. Consider this part of your outfit and wear them whenever you are Rachael."

She also gave Rachael a small black cloth handbag with a shoulder strap. It had a small Hello Kitty logo on it. "Use this to carry your glasses, your cell phone, you makeup, your charge cards and whatever else you'll need as a girl."

During the school year, there was usually a trip to the mall for the boarding students on Friday or Saturday night. The school owned several mini buses that were used for this and many other activities. They hired alumnae to be the drivers, usually college seniors. Many drivers were also used to help supervise the various houses and dorms. Erin Clark and Neillie Brown were on duty today.

"This will probably be a unique experience for most of you. Men usually approach shopping with a purpose, a list, a plan of attack and they stick to it. A man has no problem shopping alone."

"Women, on the other hand, may start out to search for a particular item of clothing but they end up trying everything on. And then try it on again. We like to shop in groups from two to five girls. We like the stores where our friends work and we like the specialty stores that are geared toward our young tastes. The large anchor stores are usually reserved for shopping trips with our moms or to stop at the cosmetic counter for a free makeover."

When at the mall, we are on our own, no parents or teachers around. We'll meet people we know and people we don't know. This is a place to see and to be seen. "

"There are usually three types of girls' fashions you'll see at the mall. First there are the basic hooded sweatshirt over a top types in a pair of jeans and some flip flops, with their hair up in a simple ponytail and a little makeup. Some of the more fashionable types might wear a tank or spaghetti strap top with a miniskirt and hair up in braids or pigtails and more fashionable makeup. The third look is just for hanging out, oversized T shirts, plaid flannel pants with no particular hairstyle or makeup noticeable."

Before they began they sat on some benches and the girls gave them a preview of the stores.

Limited Too: so teeny bopper, but very cute clothes. One of the girl's 20 year old sister loved these clothes particularly the sports related clothes with the cheer logos and she liked the TooWare, Limited's name for their line of underwear. If you like Limited Too, you'll like LibbyLu.

Old Navy and the Gap: the clothes are plain but inexpensive and comfy to wear.

Wet Seal: Some cute stuff, whether you like punk or preppy.

Hot Topic: Oh my god, everything from goth to skater to punk rock classics.

American Eagle: simple, but stylish and trendy and they treat us like customers.

Gadzooks and Rave: cool clothes with cool music in the background

Hollister: It's owned by Abercrombie and Fitch; they have some cute and comfortable sheer tanks and some awesome skirts at prices cheaper than A&F.

Claires: I'm like, grab a basket and toss in barrettes, jewelry and a lot of other cool accessories

Bath and Beauty works: love those lotions and fragrances

Victoria Secret: Did you notice that all the saleswomen wear silk blouses and that they all have great bodies? I usually stop in to spray on some of their perfume but I usually don't buy anything.

After these reviews it was time to get started, except for one quick stop for all in the ladies room to check outfits, makeup and hair. They then divided up into groups of three or four. Rachael was teamed with Katie and Allison.

At the first store, Katie and Allison automatically moved to the sales racks. They started flipping through the clothes on the hangers. They began to hold up skirts and tops in front of each other and in front of Rachael. General comments were, "I love this skirt, but it would be so hot on you", "Thirty five dollars, it is so cute but it costs too much."

"Rach, we'll find you an outfit to model for us." Katie held up a nice looking top in front of her brother/sister. "Let's look for a matching skirt." They keep looking and came up with a skirt. "Head back to the dressing room and come back out and show us."

Rachael hesitantly moved towards the dressing room at the back of the store. She found an empty stall and closed the door behind her. Actually it was only the top half of the door and the lock didn't work. She looked around and noticed a small bench, a full length mirror and some hooks to hang things on. I might as well get this over with she thought.

She took off her capris and top and hung them on a hook. She stepped unsteadily into the skirt, tugged on it, and pulled it on, just above the hips. The bottom of the skirt was brushing against the top of her knee. She then pulled the top over her head. It was tight across the chest and it left the midriff slightly bare. She turned toward the mirror and then turned left and right. He couldn't believe the fashionable young girl that was staring back at him.

When he came out, the two girls commented. "Oh, aren't you the girly girl "and "How sweet."

The girls had picked out another outfit for Rachael and some clothes for themselves. The three headed back to the dressing rooms. They took turns trying on the outfits and passed clothes back and forth over the doors.

After several trips, they changed back into their original clothes. "All that time and you didn't buy anything." said Rachael timidly. "Okay, but remember shopping doesn't necessarily mean buying" answered Katie. "Now I hope you realize why it takes girls so long to shop. We have to make so many selections and decisions." Allison added.

They went through many other stores and here are some of the outfits that either one or all of them tried on

There were many comments as the different fitting room doors were swung open "That's too cute" ," Too short", "Too long" "Nice fit" or "Awesome it's you, simply beautiful, darling" It looks great, are you going to buy it?"

All the groups eventually met by the mall's center fountain. "Let's head for the Food Court."

For those that wanted a snack the big favorites were Auntie Anne's Pretzels and the Orange Julius. Most of the others decided on sandwiches at the Panera Bread. The conversation centered on their shopping challenges and descriptions of what they did or didn't buy. After lunch they headed back to the buses. On the buses, the new girls were cheered as veteran mall shoppers.

When they reached the school, the big sisters said goodbye to their little sisters. Allison explained that they would meet as a group in about two weeks after school has started, but many sisters would be calling and getting together sooner than that. There were a lot of hugs and kisses.

The little sisters' assistants were called into a nearby classroom after they had changed out of their shopping clothes, makeup and hair. Allison explained that she was very grateful for the boys' participation this week. She said that she hoped they enjoyed most of it too .They did still owe two days help because of the lost bet. Michael thought to himself that ever though that was a few days ago, it seemed like a million years. Allison told them all that she would be getting in touch with them through the little sisters in the next week or so. She thanked them again and gave each a package to take with them. They were to wait until they got home to open it.

Michael opened the package and a note fell out. "Thanks again for all your help this week. We hope you had fun. We have given you an official Ivy Academy taking it easy outfit. Look at the blue/green plaid flannel pants, they are actually pajama bottoms but can be worn as casual wear. We also have given you a long sleeved Ivy Tee shirt. Many of the girls use it as part of their sleep set. We would like you to wear it several times over the next two weeks. Bring it with you to the Frosh Lock Inn. You'll again be asked to help our little sisters in some freshman initiation traditions. Andrews is having a camp over that weekend also so you could use this as the reason why you'll be gone. We will arrange rides for all of you."

"We'd also like you to bring two bottles of nail polish, one pink and one dark red. Bring along a little girls doll, maybe one of your own (ha) or maybe borrow one of your sisters. Lastly bring a pair of fuzzy slippers. We don't care how you get them. Looking forward to again seeing our little sisters "little sisters." and it was signed "Your big sisters."

The two weeks went by quickly. School had started and a lot was going on. Michael explained to his mom that he was going on an overnight. Katie had showed her mother the letter that described the lock in." It sounds like a lot of fun. I'm glad they also wanted you to invite your younger sisters and their female friends. Heather is excited about that. With Michael away, I'll have one of the first weekends home alone in a long time. I think I can manage that quite nicely."

Michael was a little shocked that Heather would be going along. No one had told him that. Now it looked like someone else in the family might get to see him dressed as a girl. While he was thinking about it he went into her room and grabbed one of the Barbie dolls. He didn't realize it but it was a Cinderella Barbie in a blue gown. Oh, no. What next?

When that Friday came, Allison arrived to pick up the girls. She meant Rachael too, but told Michael's mom that she would be happy to drop him off at the Academy. All three of them piled their sleeping bags into Allison's trunk along with some other backpacks. Mom just waved as they drove off.

When they arrived, Michael noticed that most everyone was dressed in matching T shirts and flannel pants. He was told to go and change and not to forget his fancy underwear.

When he came out, there he was in pajama bottoms, fuzzy slippers and a Tee shirt with the outline of a bra visible underneath.

The overnight started with some ice-breakers. There were games in which each one got introduced and games where you had to find someone that matched a certain card that was randomly passed out, except that no one could speak for ten minutes. There were lots of friendly hugs and embraces. Rachael found this somewhat unusual because guys would never do this. They were divided up into small groups and worked on some games and activities that were designed to build up trust in each other.

Erin and Neillie, the college students who were training as student supervisors at the Academy were in charge of the events tonight. Erin spoke. "This is an organized slumber party for the entire freshman class and their big sisters. Now that we've gotten to know each other a little better, it's time for our little sisters to go and change and return to carry out one of Ivy's freshman initiation traditions." Rachael left with the others and they sat down for the explanations.

Before this began, the real little sisters and their friends had been sent off to watch a video appropriately entitled "The Little Princess and to try some other activities. Rachael saw that Heather was talking with Steffanie Martin who was Jack/Becky's little sister. They were such good friends and would have a great time together.

"As you know, freshmen are our little sisters. We'll it's time that you dress like one. Also we've combined another initiation activity with this one. Once you are dressed you will give you big sisters manicures and pedicure, then there will be a judging for the Cutest Little girl and the best manicure/pedicure. The little sisters can get dressed themselves, they can ask their assistant to dress up or both of you can become little girls."

Katie had known about this for two weeks and she had arranged for both her and Rachael to be dressed. The costume closet in the Theater was again useful in providing some of the outfits. One of the girls mothers was also a seamstress and it seems that on occasion she had created little girl outfits for costume parties or plays , even a few that boys or men would be wearing.

The girls were first given a set of frilly undies. The bottoms were called rhumba panties. Rachael's were in a pastel print with lace around the leg openings and rows of nylon ruffles trimmed with lace across the bottom. A matching camisole with lace and ribbons complemented the girly bottoms. There was no need for a bra for this outfit. He put on a pair of shimmery white tights followed by white anklets with a lacy pink trim. A pair of crème colored mary jane shoes with tiny straps would later go on his feet.

Next they were given a full bouffant petticoat. It was one of the most feminine items that Rachel had ever seen. She pulled it down over her chest and tummy and let it fall to just above her knees. She adjusted the straps of the nylon bodice and adjusted the banded elastic waist. The skirt had rows and rows of chiffon, taffeta, nylon netting and lace trim everywhere. As she moved her hips, the fabric made a special rustling sound that she had never heard before. Was he really starting to like this? he thought to himself.

Rachael's dress was out of a fairy tale. It had a satin tank bodice in petal pink and an ivory white tulle skirt with scattered tiny red roses and bows throughout. There was a silk organza sash around the waist and it tied in a big bow in the back and the lacy hem of the dress barely reached her knees.

Katie's dress had a lacy bodice and a full satin skirt in the front. The color was called lemonade. The skirt in the back was cut out to reveal a tulle skirt in lavender with ribbon and lace trim. Around her waist was a shimmer bow accented with flowers that tied in the back also.

Each girl had a little makeup, just a tiny bit of pink blush and a bit of pink bubblegum lip gloss was applied.

Some of the girls had their hair curled in tiny ringlets, while others had pigtails or braids tied. All were given very girly barrettes and ribbons for their hair

The other dresses were like sweet creations with plenty of satin, lace, ribbons and bows. Once they were all dressed, they lined up and gave an impromptu fashion show as each one came out holding dolls. There was a lot of applause for each one. Some of the older girls acted as judges.

Now it was time for the manicures and pedicures. It was quite a sight to watch the dainty little girls working on the hands and feet of their big sisters. Katie and Rachael were of course assigned to Allison. Katie did most of the work, but she had Rachael assist.

The first to be done was the pedicure. Katie had Rachael fill a small tub with warm water, some bath salts and a few drops of peppermint oil. Allison soaked her feet in it for about ten minutes. Rachael gently scrubbed the toes and feet with a nail brush. She then dried them with a fluffy towel.

Allison just sat back relaxed and smiling. Katie then went to work. She gently rubbed a nail buffer across the toes. She put a toe separator s between her toes. Rachael had always wondered what that was used for. She applied the base coat and let it dry, and then she applied the top coat. The color was Dark Wine. When finished, Allison complemented both of them and teased Rachael that she would be next.

Katie and Allison commented that painting your nails is an art that can be a lot of fun and is a simple way to make a girl look and feel pretty. Allison took good care of her fingernails so there was no need to remove old polish or to trim the nails. Rachael watched as Katie pushed back the cuticles using an orangewood stick. She then brushed the nails with a soft manicure brush and then a nail buffer to make the nails look shiny and healthy. Rachael got to try this on Allison also. Allison commented that there is a lot of preparation before the polish is applied.

There was no need to apply a nail hardener so it was time to apply the polish. Rachael watched Katie roll the bottle in the palms of her hand rather than shake it to mix the polish. There were tissues and cotton balls nearby to catch any spills. Three coats would be applied. As the polish came out of the bottle, she took just enough for one nail. She started with a single stroke from the base up and then filled in the two sides. She started with the pinky and move toward the thumb, keeping the polish off the skin. After the base coat dried, Rachael got to apply the second coat. The photographer got some pictures of Rachael at work. Finally the top coat was applied. This coat helped to prevent chipping and made the polish last longer. In general, you should wait about 30 minutes before doing anything with your hands and you should never go to bed with wet polish on.

When they all were finished, an impromptu panel of judges walked around and checked their work, another frosh tradition. Rachael and Katie were not the winners but Allison said it was one of the best nail polishes she ever had.

The results of the girly fashion show were announced. Rachael finished in fourth place and received three pairs of lacy anklets.

After they were finished the girls were allowed to change back into their casual clothes and could remove the makeup and hair if they wanted. Rachel removed her makeup but noticed that some of the others did not.

At this time the girls' younger sisters had finished watching their movie, finished their other activities and joined the big group. They missed the little girl fashion show and the nail polishing contest. Rachael noticed Heather's fingers and figured that they had been playing with the nail polish also.

It was time for pizza, soft drinks and some homemade backed goods. The girls finished just about everything. They then played a few more games and the younger ones got ready to go to sleep. The older girls stayed up and talked. Some of the others watched a movie on a big screen, Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen starring Lindsay Lohan. A third group set up for a karaoke singing session in a music room. Rachael found a comfortable spot and unrolled her sleeping bag and soon drifted off to sleep.

In the morning, they all sat down for breakfast, mainly cereal, milk, juice, fruit and bagels. The younger girls were thanked for coming to the event and Erin and Neille had them pack up their gear and head to the buses. The plan was to then drive them home by 10 am.

"When the buses come back we're all off to the mall again. This time you assistant little sisters will be off on a scavenger hunt on your own. We will give you a list of items to find and send you off. You will have a certain amount of time to find all the items and check in with your group."

"But before we go we have to get you ready, for you see, you will be going shopping as girls, so we have to make you look like one. What you have recently experienced should help you remember that given a little help you can be transformed into convincing girls."

Rachael and Becky were assigned to dressing room A. They each were to try on two outfits and to choose one of them. Rachael's first outfit was a sleeveless polo in aqua blue with dark blue stripes and a white collar. This was paired with khaki drawstring capris with front seams and side pockets. They had decorative ties at the cuffs.

The second outfit was a creamy peach colored blouse with capped sleeves and a short skooter skirt with an elasticized waist and shoelace drawstrings. Rachael liked the idea of the look of a skirt but with shorts underneath. She chose this outfit and a pair of black crisscross strap sandals. She remembered to put on her glasses.

Becky had the choice of a white cotton blouse over a dark tank top and a pair of stonewashed denim shorts or a knee length, pullover halter dress in a floral print that tied at the back. She chose the dress.

"Well it looks like you both chose the girlier outfits, Mmmmm."

"But Becky, look at how your bra straps show in that halter style. I'll find you a strapless bra to wear and get you a little lacy half slip for your dress."

They had their makeup and hair done, but this time the girls let them do much more on their own. Rachael and Becky did each others nails in Maybelline Express Finish Easy Dry Enamel in Just Pink.

Before the got off the bus at the Mall, Allison gave them their instructions. "Each of you will be given a list of 5 items to find in the fashion hunt. You will also be given a time limit and you must try on at least 3 of the items in the store. We will be close by, but you may not ask us for help. You may help each other if you wish."

"To make things a little more interesting, here is what we propose. You still owe us 2 days from the original bet. If you find all 5 items within the time limit you may decide that this is your last day. If you don't meet the requirements, you still owe us. Just to let you know, the last day may include preparing our meals and doing our laundry."

Each of the girls was sprayed with a bit of some girly fragrance and was given a list on the bus.

Rachael's read:

Item 1: a pair of Hanes Silk Reflections Sheer Toe Opaque Tights in Charcoal size A/B for under $8.00.

Item 2: matching bracelet and necklace with a teddy bear or kitten theme

Item 3: a clear strap white classic seamless bra size 34A

Item 4: a racer back floral knit sundress that is 2 inches above the knees

Item 5: a tropical print tank over a solid cotton tee with a knee length denim skirt

They all started their search. Rachael found the pantyhose at JCPenneys on sale for $7.50.

The sundress she found and tried on at Guess. She headed to the dressing room and tried on the tank and skirt set that she found at Old Navy. Claire's was the store for the bracelet and necklace. She also tried on some other jewelry while she was there. There was a half hour left and still no bra. They had a plan to meet at this time to see if any last items could be found. Rachael looked at the others list, he was glad his wasn't as difficult and he had a few suggestions for the others.

No one had a clue for him so he just started to try the closest stores. As he passed by the Limited Too, he remembered their first shopping trip and how someone said they had some bras in their Tooware section. He quickly rushed in and there it was. Now for the embarrassing part; it seemed that this type of a purchase still could make him blush. He knew this was the last item so he went to the changing room, tried it on and purchased it from the nearest salesgirl. When he put the change into his handbag, he also took off his glasses and put them away.

Everyone returned to the mall fountain when the time was up. It seems that 4 of the 10 little sisters found all 5 items. Allison walked up to each of the four and asked them to tell her what they decided to do.

When she got to Rachael she said, "Wow, Rachael you passed the fashion hunt. Now before you tell me what you want to do, I'd like to say a few things. I think you all have been very brave and sweet and we have enjoyed watching you help our new freshman girls become part of Ivy Academy. I hope that you have had some fun and had some new experiences with us. We would like to continue and include you in some of our activities this year, but that is up to you."

Before Rachael answered, she reached into her bag, put on her glasses and smiled.

Earlier that same day, in the same Mall, Heather and her mother were walking in the main concourse.

"We still have a few things to get for your sister" said Heathers mom. "Tell me again how you found out."

Heather answered, "When we were at the overnight, Steffy and I went out to vending machines to get juice and snacks. We were quite surprised as we looked into one of the large rooms and saw the girls all dressed up. I recognized Katie, but boy were we surprised when we saw our brothers Michael and Jack dressed as sweet little girls. There was Michael holding my Barbie. I wondered how it got lost. "

"We quickly headed back to our movie. Later I saw Michael after he had changed, but I noticed he had polish on his nails. We didn't mention any of this to anyone or that he was at Ivy Academy and not Andrews Academy until I had to tell you this morning."

"I've noticed a few strange things going on these last few weeks myself. For example, did you hear Katie call him Rachael about 4 or times this week? Did you notice that both of them were wearing the same plaid flannel pants at night? I didn't know what to make of it. I know the boys lost some kind of a bet and it did seem that they were spending a lot of time with Katie and a lot of time at the girls' school. This week, while putting clean pillowcases in his room, I notice something in the open sports bag he has been carrying around .When I went to close it, I saw some girls underwear and swimsuit and some makeup."

Heather said "I hope she'll be pleased with the new tops and skirts we bought. The pajama set is very cute. I know she'll love her new Cheerleader Barbie. Katie has been busy lately with her new friends at her new school. She doesn't really have the time to spend with me anymore. It looks like Rachael can step in. We're going to have some fun playing Barbies together and also playing some dressup games. Maybe we can invite Stef and Becky to a sleepover sometime."
