Faye's Beginning                by: Faye Beattie

Stuart was like any other 8 year old boy. He enjoyed soccer and went to see Mudchester United play every Saturday. He also played with Action Men and got into fights with other boys his age. But what he didn't tell people was that every night he would go to bed dreaming that in the morning he would wake up as a girl. Every time he was in town with his mother he would stare at the pretty dresses in the clothes shops as he went by. He tried to act cooly in front of his mother but all he wanted to do was run into that shop and put on a dress.

The day before his 9th birthday he was watching a daytime talkshow. It had on children who wanted to be the other sex. He saw this boy on it. Well, I say it was a boy but he had on a beautiful purple knee-length dress with a lace collar, knee-high socks and a gorgeous pair of leather Mary Janes. He had long brown hair with a hairband in it and a diamond necklace.

"I told Mummy when I was six that I was a girl," he told the presenter, "She was really understanding and bought me everything I wanted. I was really sad when I was younger but now I'm the happiest girl in the world!"

Stuart couldn't stop himself from being jealous of this beautiful young girl. He started daydreaming he was her and talking to the presenter. He didn't wake up until his mother said it was tea time. He ate his tea and ran straight upstairs and into his bedroom to cry. He didn't even have a sister that he could share clothes with. He went downstairs again at 9:00.

"You've been upstairs a long time" his fater said, "we thought you were never going to come down."

"I've just been thinking that's all." Stuart replied.

"Have some supper and then go to bed. I'm sure you will be up early tomorrow to open you're presents."

He went to bed and cried himself to sleep. Why couldn't he tell his parents about his feelings. It was so unfair.

"Stuart wake up. Happy birthday, dear. It's nearly 10:00. Come on get up. You have a long day ahead of you." His mother said. "I've left you some underwear to put on and then put on your dressing gown. I'll meet you downstairs in ten minutes."

Stuart sleepily got out of bed, took off his pajamas and put on the most comfortable pair of pants he had ever put on. He looked down at them and saw they had white frills around them and a little pink bow on the front. He couldn't believe it. He thought there must have been some kind of mistake. He looked in all his drawers but all his pants had gone. In fact, all his clothes had gone. all there was in his room was the pair of panties he had on and a Barbie-pink, silk dressing gown. He was still in a state of shock when he went downstairs.

"I know you're probably a bit cold, dear, and a bit surprised but there is a reason for all this but before we tell you we are all going to have your favourite breakfast together."

All three of them sat down to eat. Pancakes with lashings of maple syrup. Usually he would be thrilled to have such a lovely breakfast but he couldn't get over the fact that he was wearing girls clothing.

"could you take these dirty plates through to the kitchen for me dear. There's a good girl." Did he hear her alright. Did his mum just call him GIRL?

He came back into the living room to find his parents standing there with hundreds of presents all wrapped up in pink wrapping paper.

"Open this one first dear and then get dressed." He opened it to find a pink knee-length dress with a white lace collar, ruffled sleeves and loads of lace petticoats. He just looked at it. It was the most beautiful dress he had ever seen. He walked slowly up the stairs to his room. He never took his eyes off of the dress. As he went into his room he just saw the door of the spare bedroom open a bit. He couldn't remember the walls ever being pink. Oh well. He sat down on his bed and just looked at it. He couldn't believe he was holding the dress let alone about to wear it!

His mother came in about 5 minutes afterwards.

"Oh. I see you haven't got dressed yet. What the matter, dear. Don't you like it?"

"It's not that Mummy, it's just that I have waited my whole life for this moment and now that it's here I want it to be just right."

"Well in mine and your fathers eyes it is right. We've seen you looking at the pretty dresses in town and at all the little girls that wear them. And if we were haing any doubts we just had to see your face yesterday when you were watching that T.V. show. When you fell asleep we just knew you were dreaming of being that little girl." Stuart started to cry. He had never been so happy.

"Do you want me to help you put it on?"

"Oh yes please Mummy!" Mummy, yes that did sound right.

She told him to put his hands up while she put it on. It fell over his shoulders perfectly and for the first time he felt normal. The lace petticoats were really comfortable against his bare legs. He sat down, remembering to cross his legs like he had seen girls do. The material felt so soft against his body. He felt sorry for the boys who didn't get the chance to have this sensation.

"Mummy it's wonderful. It feels so right. This is the best birthday ever."

"It's not over yet, dear. Put these socks on and then come downstairs and open your other presents."

When he got downstairs he went straight to his dad and hugged him.

"What was that for, dear?"

"For letting me have this opportunity, Daddy."

His mother came into the room and SHE started to open her other presents. The first was a pair of black, leather Mary Janes, just like the ones the girl on the telly was wearing but these ones had a little embroided flower on each. The second was a Fashion Show Barbie. No more Action Man, he thought. The third was a little orange skirt and an orange top that said Beauty Queen across it. He had lots more presents like this which included five more dresses, four more skirts, two blouses and a purple, really stretchy swimsuit.

"Where am I going to wear this Mummy?"
"You'll see" She said. "Oh look. This one's from Granny and Grandpa."

"Oh well. That's the end of all my clothes. What is it, an Action Man."

"Open it and find out!" His father said.

Inside the wrapping paper was a blue dress with a white apron, white tights, black shoes and a white hairband.

"It's an Alice In Wonderland costume. You'll be able to wear it to your cousin's fancy dress party in a few weeks time!"

"How do they know about....me, Mummy?"

"The whole family knows dear. We were going to have to tell them sooner or later and we thought it would be nice if they bought you some nice things for your birthday. All of them are fine with it. Don't worry."

The next present was from his cousin, Juliet. She was going to be 11 in a few weeks time and was having a fancy dress party. She had given him a white, very lacy dress that came right down to the ankles with another pair of white tights and and white very low heeled shoes. The message said:

I wore this to my sister's wedding. I was a bridesmaid. I have outgrown it now and thought you might like it. Maybe one day you could be my bridesmaid.

"I know, lets go down the park and have a picnic for lunch. What do you say?"

"O.K. Daddy. Just let me get changed."

"What for dear?"

"Well, you don't think I'm going out like this, do you?"

"Why not, dear." His mother answered, "You look like any other 9 year old girl. But it is a bit cold out so let me put some tights on for you."

His mother grabbed some tights off of a pile and rolled up one leg. She pulled it up Stuart's leg and them did the same with the other one. This was the best feeling he had had all day. The tights felt wonderful against his skin. He put on some Mary Janes and he was ready.

"Are you sure no one will notice?"

"Well they will if we call you Stuart. What do you want to be called from now on, dear?"

"Erm.... I always dreamt of being called Faye. It's such a feminime name."

"Faye it is then."

And with that they went to the park. By the time they got home, after having dinner in town, it was nearly 9:00 and Faye's bedtime. The only thing she didn't get for her birthday was a nightgown.

"Oh well. I'll go and put on those uncomfortable pajamas then." She said.

"You can't dear. We threw them away with the rest of your male clothes."

"So what will I be wearing then?"

Her mother went out of the room and came back with a black, silk nightgown.

"And you have one more surprise to go yet." Her father said.

They went upstairs but instead of going into her bedroom they stopped outside the spare room.

"Why have we stopped here, Daddy?"

"Open the door and find out, Faye."

She opened the door to see a pink room with white lace curtains, pink furniture and a giant doll's house in the corner.

"Oh Daddy it's wonderful. It must've taken ages."

"I did it while you were at school."

"Oh no, school. What am I going to do. I can't go in like this."

"Faye, dear. We still have another month until school starts again. We'll have it sorted by then. Now go to sleep and we will see you bright and early tomorrow morning. Night night, dear."

"Night night Mummy. Night night Daddy. Thank you. This has been the best birthday ever. I can't thank you enough. I love you both so much and with that Faye went to sleep straight away for the first time in ages. The only crying she was doing now was because she was so happy.
