Chapter 25
Breakfast was blueberry pancakes. It also marked the halfway point of their summer on the island.
"I have an alternative to the boat wreck," stated Hallie, as she passed the platter with the bacon. She was wearing a pair of shorts, a blue t-shirt, and a gray hooded sweatshirt.
"What is it?" asked Alex, as he took the platter from her.
"How about I just tell everyone that I had a sex change?" answered Hallie.
"How do you explain the fact that you're now shorter and look totally different?" asked Lane.
Without looking her way, Hallie answered. "I'm only a first year student, so I could transfer to another university. My parents don't see me now, so that's no problem. I don't want to become a totally new person. I'm an archeologist and I want my past too."
"And what happens if you get pregnant?" asked Lane.
Hallie shrugged her shoulders. "I checked online, and I can get all my paperwork changed so it says that I'm really female. Down the line, I'll just pass myself off as a natural born woman. If I get pregnant, that will only reinforce my cover."
"Besides, there is the possibility that you aren't fertile," added Carla.
Hallie looked over at Kim, and they began to giggle. "I'm pretty sure that I'm one hundred percent female."
The others looked over at Hallie.
"I started my first period this morning. Thankfully, Kim was already up and was of great assistance," confessed Hallie.
Carla reached over and took her hand. "You okay?"
Hallie held her hand out and wiggled it. "Scared, but intrigued."
"I set up an appointment for you tomorrow in town. Do you want to move it back a few days?" asked Carla.
"I don't care. Might as well it get out of the way now," she replied.
"You up to working today?" asked Alex.
"Sure. I want to look at those jars some more," replied Hallie.
"Good. Kim, I want you to check the database for other artifacts with similar markings. Lane, I want you to assist Kim," stated Alex.
"If you don't mind, Hallie, I have a lawyer friend back at the university. He might be able to speed up your identity change. Do you mind if I call him?" asked Carla.
"No, not at all. I assume that you're not going to tell him the whole truth," replied Hallie with a smile.
Carla smiled and shook her head no.
Chapter 26
Kim and Lane began to run through an online database of Minoan artifacts. They found a few that had similar markings.
"Well, if the markings were designed to fool people, it certainly worked. Every description refers to the markings as decorative in nature," noted Kim.
"You're right," replied Lane. She then looked over her shoulder at Hallie, who was working on the other side of the room. "Is she still angry at me?"
Kim glanced over. "Yes. Don't expect her to cool off anytime soon either."
"But she seems to be more accepting of what happened to her?"
"Lane, that's because she wants to get on with her life. She isn't angry with you because she's now a woman; she's angry because you used her. How would you feel if the roles were reversed? She might be more polite with you, but she's still hurting on the inside," answered Kim. "Oh, I just found another one."
"Do you think she'll press charges against me?"
"No."
Lane nodded. "Just hypothetically speaking, what sort of 'punishment' do you think would be appropriate?"
Kim noted the slightly sarcastic tone that Lane used when she said punishment. "I have no idea. I'm not big on the idea of an eye for an eye. I do think you need to take a long look at yourself. You have so much going for you, yet you're so driven and compulsive that you scare me. I don't know if I can ever trust you again."
"Well, that was brutally honest. Carla pretty much said the same thing. I appreciate your honesty, Kim."
"That's a good idea, why don't you talk with Carla. Maybe she has a good idea for your penance," added Kim. "You need to do something that involves helping others, with no regard for any reward for yourself."
Lane nodded. "You might be right." She looked over at Hallie again. "You're also right about something else. If the roles were reversed, I couldn't forgive myself either."
Chapter 27
Hallie was relieved that the discomfort wasn't as bad as she'd thought it would be. When she'd been Harry, he'd never given much thought to the idea that he carried the seed for making another life. But now, it was a huge deal. Hallie wasn't sure, but she suspected that she wouldn't have any problems getting pregnant. As with the other bits of information she could remember from her encounter with the entities, nothing was crystal clear.
Hallie also knew that Carla was right about her gradual acceptance of her female status. The fear and anger over the transformation was passing. Maybe it would be for the best, as she didn't want to go through life with gender identity issues. She had also spent some time on some transgendered websites. She could relate to the struggles they had. Too bad they couldn't use the dildo to help them, but that would create more problems than it solved. Hallie knew that, once the secret was out, someone would use it to hurt someone.
She returned her focus to her work. She figured that she could read maybe half the message on the jar. Even though she couldn't read it all, she was convinced that the dildo had been used only on volunteers. In fact, from what she could tell, the volunteers were questioned several times to ensure their sincerity and willingness to undergo transformation.
"Hey, you look like you could use a break," interrupted Kim.
Hallie turned around. "Wow, it's almost lunchtime. I lost all track of time."
"Let's go for a walk," suggested Kim.
Hallie nodded. "I need to put this away. Alex's rules."
Kim nodded. Only Alex had the combination to the safe, and he insisted that everything be locked up whenever they took a break.
"Lane and I found ten jars with similar markings in the database. Two are in a museum in Boston, one's in New York, and the rest are in Athens," stated Kim. "We're going to check the database for artifacts in Crete this afternoon. I expect to find many more there."
"Athens, Crete…that sounds interesting," replied Hallie. "I wonder if Alex could arrange for me to spend some time there."
"That might be a good idea. You could stay over there for a while. By the time you returned to campus, you could start fresh," stated Kim.
After they locked the safe, they took a walk around the island.
"Lane still wants to make up with you," informed Kim.
"That's nice. I wish I could forgive her as quickly."
"Can I ask you something? It's rather personal," asked Kim, as they walked along the shore.
Hallie nodded.
"Do you still like girls?" asked Kim.
Hallie didn't answer immediately. She had told Kim about her fantasizing about Kurt. "I think so. I mean it's hard to explain. Things are changing."
Kim nodded. "When you were a male, did you find me attractive? You can be honest."
Hallie smiled. "Yes, I found you attractive. I also liked hanging around with you."
"What about Lane?"
"I would be lying if I said that I didn't find Lane hot. But I knew she was out of my league. I was just hoping to be friends with her."
"So would you have had sex with her?"
Hallie smiled and nodded. "I was a guy, not a saint."
Kim laughed. "Honest answer."
"I still cannot believe how she used me," sighed Hallie.
"She's starting to understand why you're so angry with her," informed Kim.
Hallie nodded.
"One more question, would you have asked me out?" asked Kim.
"Maybe, when we got back to campus. But what could have prevented me from asking you out would be the idea that I might lose you as a friend."
Kim gave Hallie a look.
"No, honestly," replied Hallie. She began to sense that Kim was interested in more than just friendship.
Kim smiled. "Well, that's what you've got now."
"While we're digging into personal questions, it's my turn. Do you like other women?" asked Hallie.
"Couldn't you tell?" replied Kim, with a wink.
Hallie was taken aback by her answer. She was about to reply when they heard Carla ring the lunch bell.
"We'll have to continue this conversation later," stated Kim. "Come on, we can't keep the others waiting."
Hallie noted to herself, life just got more complicated, but in a good sense.
Chapter 28
Later that evening, Hallie was helping Carla clean up after dinner.
"I thought it was Kim's turn to help me clean up," remarked Carla as they began to wash the dishes.
"It was, but I wanted to talk to you," replied Hallie.
Carla nodded and handed Hallie a plate to dry. "What do you want to talk about?"
"I just wanted to talk to you about my…."
"Your transformation?" asked Carla.
Hallie nodded. "I'm slowly getting used to the idea that I'm going to be a woman the rest of my life. I just don't know if I can pull it off. I mean, inside I'm still Harry. Granted my emotions are looser, but I'm still a guy in my head."
"Are you sure?"
Hallie thought about it. "Okay, I've changed in some ways, but I'm far from total acceptance. Thankfully, I'm in a field where I can get by without wearing dresses and skirts. I don't even want to think about putting on makeup!"
"Clothes and makeup don't make you female. It's what's inside that counts."
"How do you see me?" asked Hallie.
"Honestly? I see you as a young woman."
"Anything specific?" asked Hallie as she dried a coffee cup.
"No. It's more of a big picture sort of thing. I would never suspect you were once male."
Hallie nodded slowly. "I guess that's good. It will make living easier."
"Tomorrow morning we're going into town. Your physical will be at ten. If you feel up to it, I'd like to take you shopping. More importantly, you need to learn to be out in public and to feel comfortable in public."
"I don't have any problems with that," replied Hallie.
Carla looked Hallie in the eye.
Hallie began to laugh. "Okay, okay, you're right. I'm nervous about tomorrow."
"You'll do fine."
Hallie nodded. "What do you think about my plan concerning explaining my new gender?"
"I like it a lot more that faking your death," replied Carla. "I traded e-mails with my lawyer friend. He said that he could start the paperwork immediately. He said that it's a pretty simple procedure. It's just legal paperwork."
"I thought I needed a letter from a doctor stating that I was 'in transition.' Where will we get that?" asked Hallie.
"I wrote your letter."
Hallie looked at her.
"Yes, dear, I'm a therapist. For me, archeology is just a hobby. I no longer practice, but I still have my license."
Hallie smiled. "The goddesses are definitely watching over me."
"I do need something from you. What name do you want to use?"
Hallie thought about it. She had planned on being Hallie Thorn, but hadn't given much thought to her middle name.
"Hallie, Alex and I talked last night, and we have an idea. If you don't want to do it, neither of us will be upset. How does Hallie Thorn Pappadimos sound to you?"
Hallie stood there in silence.
"You look as if you could be related to us. It might make your transition to living fulltime as Hallie a bit easier. It would also deflect questions you might get if you were just Hallie Thorn."
"I…I would be honored," answered Hallie as tears began to flow down her face. She then leaned over and hugged Carla.
Chapter 29
"Stop fidgeting," whispered Carla to Hallie, as they sat in the waiting room of the doctor's office.
"Sorry. I've never liked doctors' exams. So how long have you known Dr. Devin?" She picked up a People magazine and saw that it was six months old. She began to mindlessly page through it.
"Hmmm, I guess I've known Joan for over ten years. She set up practice here after her father retired. He was a doctor here for forty years. Don't worry, you can trust her."
A few minutes later a pleasant looking woman came out into the waiting area. Her bright red hair was pulled back into a bun. As soon as Hallie looked at her, she could tell that there was a lot of Irish blood in her.
"Carla! It's so good to see you. I've been wanting to come out to the island," greeted Joan. They gave each other a friendly hug.
"Joan, this is my niece, Hallie. She's working with Alex and me this summer."
"Pleased to meet you, Hallie. You must be from Alex's side of the family," smiled Joan.
"Yes, I am," answered Hallie as she extended her hand.
"She just needs a physical for school," stated Carla.
"Okay, Hallie, why don't you follow me into my office?" said Joan.
The exam went by without any problems. Hallie did her best to invent a believable medical record for herself. After all, the physical was just to establish that she was healthy. There was no need to tell Joan the truth.
"Well, Hallie, you're a picture of health," stated Joan, as she finished up the exam. She read the medical history form that Hallie had filled up. "I see that you're not on birth control. Would you like a prescription for birth control pills?"
Hallie nodded. "How did you know?"
Joan laughed. "I've been seeing the students who work with Alex and Carla for many years. I've written many prescriptions for them."
Joan then explained about the pills and their side effects. Hallie felt a little better knowing that she now had a way of preventing getting pregnant.
Over lunch, Carla and Hallie talked about the physical.
"I really like Joan. She's the first doctor that I haven't felt nervous around," remarked Hallie. She then took a bite of her lobster roll.
"I like her too. You know, should you decide to tell her the truth, I know she could be trusted."
Hallie thought about it. "It would be nice to be honest with her. I'll think about it."
"So how do you feel right now?" asked Carla.
Hallie laughed. "It's like when you're first learning to ice skate. It's only when you think about what you're doing that you feel nervous."
"That's good. Now, after we eat, we'll hit a few stores. One more thing, how do you feel about having your ears pierced?"
"I haven't given it much thought," replied Hallie.
"We can have it done this afternoon," suggested Carla.
Hallie shrugged her shoulders. "I'll think about it."
Chapter 30
As they shopped, Hallie had the strange feeling that she was an outsider and someone would guess the truth. She tried to dismiss these feelings as ridiculous.
"Here, try on this skirt," offered Carla, as she held out a long skirt.
Hallie gave her a look.
"Hallie, it's just a piece of clothing. You're worrying about fitting in, dressing appropriately will help you blend in," whispered Carla.
"Okay," stated Hallie, as she took the skirt. She went into the changing room and tried it on. In spite of herself, she had to admit that she looked good in it. It was silly that she was so worried about what she was wearing, she thought. After all, I'm not a man dressing in women's clothes; I'm physically a woman now.
She stepped out of the dressing room. Carla was very pleased with the way the skirt looked on her.
"Good. Now try these," offered Carla, as she handed Hallie several shorter skirts.
Hallie took the skirts and nodded.
The skirts felt a bit strange at first. Still, they were comfortable, she thought. She tried to rationalize that they were pieces of clothing, but part of her still resisted. Hallie knew that these internal conflicts would be something that she would have for the rest of her life.
She liked two of the skirts and rejected the third. She didn't like the color.
"I'm not ready to have my ears pierced," confessed Hallie, as they looked at tops to go with the skirts.
"Okay, that's fine," said Carla. "We'll pay for these and then go by the market before we go back to the island."
They stopped and picked up some vegetables for dinner. They also picked up some fresh bread. Hallie noted that Carla was very picky about what she bought for dinner.
On the boat back to the island, they talked freely.
"So, that wasn't so bad was it?" asked Carla, as she steered the boat.
"No, it wasn't. As the day went on, the more relaxed I felt. I wonder how much of this is related to the spell," answered Hallie.
"Why don't you wear one of your skirts to dinner tonight?" suggested Carla. "Kim will like seeing you in it." She then threw a smile back at Hallie.
"Is it that obvious?" asked Hallie.
Carla nodded.
"And you don't mind?" asked Hallie.
Carla laughed. "Why would I mind? Alex and I have many friends in same sex relationships. Considering your status, it actually makes sense. I've known since last summer that Kim prefers other women. Besides, you two make a nice couple."
"We haven't done anything yet," answered Hallie.
"That may be true, but you've thought about it. I've also seen the way Kim looks at you."
"Thanks, Carla. I know I've said it before, but I don't know how I'd survive this without you. I doubt my own parents would have been as understanding."
Carla nodded.
Hallie wasn't sure at first, but it looked like Carla was crying.
"Is everything alright?" asked Hallie, as she stood behind Carla.
Carla stopped the boat and turned to face Hallie. Tears were running down her face.
"Did I say something wrong?" asked a concerned Hallie.
"No, my dear. I suppose I should have told you this sooner. You know that Alex and I don't have any children. We did plan on a family. I was pregnant, but there were complications. I lost the child and was told that I shouldn't get pregnant again. Our daughter would have been around the same age as you. I know that it's silly, but in some ways I see her in you," explained Carla, as she wiped aside a tear.
Hallie stood there for a moment and then leaned over and hugged Carla, who immediately returned the hug. They hugged for several moments.
"I'd be honored to be considered your daughter."
In that one hug, Hallie felt the love that she had been missing from her birth family.
As they composed themselves, Hallie turned to Carla. "Does Alex feel the same way?"
Carla nodded. "We talked about it the other night. It was his suggestion that you take our last name. You're a little old to be adopted, but we'd like to do an unofficial ceremony, if you don't mind."
That started the tears again.
As they made their final approach to the island, Hallie laughed as she wiped the tears from her eyes. "It's a good thing that I don't wear makeup!"
Chapter 31
After dinner, Kim and Hallie went for a walk.
"Hallie Thorn Pappadimos. It has a nice ring to it," stated Kim.
"I like it," answered Hallie.
"So how did Carla talk you into wearing a skirt?" asked Kim, as she eyed Hallie.
"She told me that you'd find me cute in it," replied Hallie with a wink. She had worn the long green skirt that Carla had bought her that afternoon.
Kim laughed. "I'd find you cute in a gunnysack."
"You mean that?" asked Hallie.
Kim nodded. They had reached the end of the island and Kim sat down on a big rock that overlooked the ocean. She then motioned for Hallie to sit down next to her. "I've always been attracted to women. I'm cool with it, and so are my parents. I have to admit something. I know that I should feel ashamed, but my first internal response when I saw the new you was lust!"
Hallie felt her face turning red as she blushed. "You don't really mean that?"
Kim nodded. "To top it all off, I also like you as a person."
Hallie smiled. "I think you're special too."
"Look, I know that I'm not beautiful like Lane…."
"No, you're nothing like her," interrupted Hallie. "You're far more beautiful."
Kim laughed. "I appreciate the compliment, even if you are lying to me."
Hallie took Kim's hands in hers. "I'm telling you the truth. Your beauty runs deep."
Kim smiled and they moved slightly closer together. Their first kiss was very light and tender. Hallie felt a tingle run through her as their lips met. Instantly she knew that this was something special.
Kim must have noticed it too. "You really do love me. I can tell the difference between lust and love."
Hallie nodded and began to blush again.
"Tell me what you're feeling?" asked Kim.
"It's hard to describe. I've kissed a lot of girls, but our kiss felt very different. I feel what's left of my male identity slipping away. The funny thing is that I no longer fear this change. Does that make sense?"
"Yes, as much as anything regarding your change," replied Kim.
"What's interesting is that kissing another woman felt natural and normal," continued Hallie.
Kim smiled. "Do you realize what you just said?"
Kim shook her head no, as she tried to remember her words.
"You referred to what we just did as kissing another woman. I think you've started another new chapter in your life," beamed Kim, and she leaned over and kissed Hallie again.
"Did that one feel as natural?" asked Kim, with a big smile on her face.
"Yes, very much so. But I think I'd better do some more research," answered Hallie.
"Maybe later, we'd better get back to the house; it's getting late. Don't look so disappointed, we have plenty of time to do research," quipped Kim.
Chapter 32
The next day Hallie was hard at work trying to read the messages on the jars. She was slightly uncomfortable, but the discomfort of her period was starting to pass. It was also hard to concentrate with Kim sitting so close to her. Hallie kept looking over at Kim and feeling all funny inside. It reminded her of when she had her crush back in school.
She was snapped out of her daydreams by Alex. "Hallie, I want you to take a look at this book. It has some interesting photos of some Minoan frescos in it."
Hallie thanked him and opened up the book. She looked at the photos of excavated frescos. She marveled at the intricate details of Minoan life. There were also frescos of various gods and goddesses. Then she saw an image that shocked her. It took her a second to grasp the significance of the image.
"My God!" she exclaimed.
Her gasp caught everyone's attention. They rushed over to see what she had seen. The book was open to images of three figures. They were identified as the snake goddess, the mountain goddess, and the goddess of vegetation. The three goddesses were grouped together. They appeared to be standing over someone or something, however that part of the fresco was missing. Each figure was outlined in blue.
"These are the goddesses who transformed me!" exclaimed Hallie.
"Are you sure?" asked Kim.
Hallie nodded vigorously. "I'm positive!"
"I've seen group images of Minoan deities together before, I don't see the big deal," remarked Lane.
"This is different," stated Hallie, pointing to the blue outline of the figures.
Alex nodded in agreement. "Too bad the rest of the fresco was destroyed. It would be interesting if we could see what they're doing."
"Why did you say destroyed?" asked Lane.
"I remember reading about this fresco. The man who found it was a colleague. He discovered several frescos together. The rest were all relatively intact. The only damage was due to time. He noted that this one was deliberately destroyed, as if it had been hit with a hammer and chisel," explained Alex. "He felt it was a deliberate desecration of the images of the goddesses, but he never came up with a reason why it might have been done."
"I wonder if this was an image of a transformation?" asked Hallie.
"Well, look at the angles of their arms. They appear to be touching something," noted Kim. She then tried to position her arms in a similar posture.
"They're molding someone," remarked Hallie, almost to herself.
"If it was, then that could explain why someone destroyed it," added Alex.
"Who destroyed it?" asked Lane.
"Take your choice, Minoans, Greeks, Muslims, Christians, or any of the other groups that lived on Crete. Desecration of sexual images is nothing new. The image of the goddesses transforming a male into a female could offend someone," remarked Alex with disgust. "They probably had no idea of what they were looking at."
"Where is this fresco now?" asked Hallie, as she stared at the image.
"I can check. The last time I heard, it was in a small museum in eastern Crete. The museum was set up near the excavation. The fresco wasn't seen as historically significant enough to move to a major museum," recalled Alex.
"So, it's located near to where it was found?" asked Hallie excitedly.
Alex nodded. "Wait a minute!" he rushed over to his desk and pulled out a map of Crete. He threw it down on the table and spread it out. "Look! Here is where the fresco was found, and here is where the jars and the dildo were discovered. Why, they're less than 10 kilometers apart!"
"There must have been a concentration of this cult in the area," remarked Kim. "Or maybe even a temple!"
"I wonder if there are other artifacts in the area?" asked Hallie.
"It might be worth checking out," commented Alex.
"I want to go!" exclaimed Hallie, looking at Alex.
"Me too!" added Kim.
Alex nodded. "Don't start packing yet. It will take a while for me to set up an expedition. It will take a while to get the necessary permits and permission from the Cretan government. However, if I cash in a few favors owed me, I think we can be there next summer, assuming we can raise the funding."
"How much do you need?" asked Lane.
Kim, Alex, and Hallie turned and looked at her.
"I know that this won't wipe my slate clean, but it's a start," she remarked.
Hallie looked at Lane and could sense that she really was trying to make amends.
"Thank you," replied Hallie.
Lane nodded.
Kim hoped that this was the beginning of Hallie's forgiveness. She understood why Hallie was still angry. But at the same time Kim didn't want to see Hallie carry around her hate for the rest of her life, it wasn't healthy.
Chapter 33
After lunch, Kim had to make a run into town and Hallie joined her. They talked about the possibility of going to Crete the following summer.
"This will be so cool," remarked Kim.
"I know. My mind is swimming with the possibilities," replied Hallie.
She was thinking about the possibility of finding some artifacts related to the cult. She could read the language, but she needed something physical to allow her to share her knowledge.
They tied up the boat and headed into town. After they picked up the mail, Kim turned to Hallie. "Hey, I have an idea. Follow me!"
She grabbed Hallie by the hand and pulled her into a salon. Before Hallie could say a word, Kim was talking to the receptionist.
"My friend would like to get her ears pierced," explained Kim. Kim then turned around and winked at Hallie.
"We can get you in immediately, we just need you to read and sign this," stated the receptionist with a smile.
Hallie took the clipboard with the paperwork and sat down to fill it out. She glanced up at Kim and shook her head in mock disgust.
A few minutes later Hallie had small gold studs in her ears.
Hallie kept looking at her reflection in the store windows as they walked back to the docks.
"I can't wait until they heal and you can start wearing earrings like those," stated Kim, as she pointed to some earrings in a jewelry store window.
"It didn't hurt as much as I thought it would," remarked Hallie.
"Just make sure you follow the directions and keep the holes clean. I got a bad infection in one ear when I had mine done. I was a silly 13-year-old and I didn't follow directions. It was awful," replied Kim.
"I'll keep that in mind."
On the way back to the island, Hallie stood next to Kim. Kim leaned over and gave her a quick kiss on the cheek.
"What was that for?" asked Hallie, who had a big smile on her face.
"For being you!" replied Kim.
Chapter 34
Dinner was another of Carla's feasts. It was midsummer now, and Carla had found a bonanza of fresh local produce. The soup was a minestra of young green beans, baby carrots, chopped green onions, fresh green peppers, and baby fresh greens in the now familiar garlicky chicken broth. The antipasto was sliced fresh local tomatoes and thin-sliced red onions generously garnished with chopped fresh basil and crumbled Gorgonzola cheese, with just a light drizzle of extra-virgin olive oil and a fresh grinding of black pepper.
Carla begged forgiveness for the pasta dish. "It's really unforgivable to be so repetitious with flavorings, but when the fresh basil is first available, I can't help myself."
It was linguine with fresh pesto, and everyone gladly granted Carla permission to overdose them with fresh basil. This was followed by platter after platter of the first corn-on-the-cob of the season. Carla had made an herbed garlic butter, which gave the small, young ears of bicolor corn an exquisite Italian taste. Hallie was sure that she was making a pig of herself by having six ears, until she noticed that Alex had a pile of fourteen cobs on his plate. In between ears of corn, Carla passed a plate with thin sliced Genoa salami, prosciutto ham, and provolone cheese, along with more plain sliced tomatoes. Carla informed them that the tomatoes were to be used to mop up the melted butter on their plates. The salad was just more baby greens with oil and vinegar.
Hallie was unsure if she had room for dessert, but when Carla brought in the bowls of vanilla ice cream generously topped with fresh red raspberries, she didn't have a problem finishing hers.
The conversation was centered on the idea of spending the following summer in Crete.
"Where exactly in Crete is the site?" asked Carla.
"It's located twenty miles up the coast from Petras, on the northern coast," answered Alex. "Didn't your father spend a summer at Petras?"
"Yes. I was only seven at the time, but I had a wonderful time playing among the ruins," answered Carla.
"The site is very small. There are only a few buildings. It was never considered important enough to fully excavate. I emailed Stefanos and he told me that the hotel construction stopped due to funding problems. He fully believes he can get us a permit by next summer. Seems the locals aren't too happy with the developers of the hotel," stated Alex.
"Who's Stefanos?" asked Hallie.
"He's an old family friend and the man who obtained the objects for me," explained Alex. "He works with the museum in Sitia."
"What was the funding problem? Not enough paid off to the local officials?" quipped Carla.
Alex shrugged his shoulders. "As long as it lets us work in peace, who cares?"
"The site is close to some major Minoan settlements, but also fairly isolated. Do you think we'll find anything significant?" asked Kim.
"We won't know until we look. Besides, we have a secret weapon!" he quipped, looking at Hallie.
They all laughed.
"I must admit that I'm anxious to go over there," remarked Hallie.
"I want all three of you to take some language courses this year. Knowing even a few phrases in Greek will go a long way," recommended Alex. "I can also teach you some handy phrases."
"All three of us?" asked Lane. "No offense, but I don't think that I'd exactly be welcome on this expedition."
"Lane, you're part of this. Being professional means putting aside personal differences. Does anyone have any objections?" asked Alex.
Hallie wasn't exactly happy about Lane's inclusion in the dig, but she didn't say a word. She had to admit that Lane was a good researcher, even if she still didn't trust her.
"Will my identity issues be resolved by then?" asked Hallie.
"They should be. I've talked to my old friends in the government and they said that they'll grease the tracks for your new passport," stated Alex.
Hallie nodded. "You know, this is going to be a long year. I wish we could go there tomorrow!"
Alex nodded. "I must admit that I'm excited about the prospects of being out in the field again. However, all of us, myself included, have a lot to study first. We need to be familiar with all other research that's been done in that area, and to find out as much as we can about the artifacts which have already been found – especially about decorative borders that are more than they seem."
"There is something I want to tell everyone right now. If we find an artifact that can be used to translate the new language, I want everyone to get credit for it," stated Hallie.
"Everyone?" asked Lane.
Hallie nodded. "This doesn't mean that I've even come close to forgiving you, Lane. This is strictly a professional decision."
"Well, let's not translate our potshards before they're unearthed," quipped Alex.
A chorus of groans met his joke.
Chapter 35
After dinner was cleaned up, Kim and Hallie took a walk to the end of the island. They sat down on the rock that was fast becoming their special place.
"I'm glad to see that you're softening a little in your attitude towards Lane,' remarked Kim.
Hallie shrugged her shoulders. "I still don't trust her, but I can't keep this anger in me."
Kim smiled and leaned over and kissed Hallie on the lips. They began to kiss with more passion, their hands moving slowly over each other's bodies. Kim ran her hand over Hallie's left breast and began to lightly rub her nipple.
Hallie gasped in pleasure as her nipple hardened. "Oh, my!"
Kim giggled slightly and switched to the right nipple. Hallie squirmed in delight.
"I never knew it could be like this. It's so much more of a whole body experience," moaned Hallie.
Kim pulled away. "We'd better slow down. We can wait until the weekend."
"What's going on this weekend?" asked Hallie.
"Saturday, Carla, Alex, and Lane are going into town. I think Carla has an idea for Lane's service."
"Oh. So that means that…."
"Yes, my dear, we'll have the whole island to ourselves!" interrupted Kim.
Hallie smiled and hugged Kim.
"May I ask you something?" asked Kim.
Hallie nodded. "Of course."
"You seem more at ease concerning your transformation. How do you feel about it?"
"You're right, I am more accepting about what happened. Maybe it's part of the transformation. But I think part of it's due to the way that Alex, Carla, and you have supported me. I don't think that I could have made it this far without all of you."
"So, how do you see yourself?"
Hallie sat there for a moment. "Deep down, I'm still Harry. But I also know that I'm now Hallie. There's still duality, but it's a peaceful coexistence for now. Does that make sense?"
Kim nodded.
"Also staying busy has helped. I haven't had a lot of free time to sit around and feel sorry for myself."
"That was the plan," replied Kim with a smile. "Carla and Alex felt that it was vital to keep you occupied."
"Was your falling in love with me part of that plan?" asked Hallie. A sly grin was on her face.
Kim shook her head. "No, that was strictly a bonus part of the deal."
They kissed again and then headed back to the house.
Chapter 36
"Are you sure you want to watch this?" asked Kim.
Hallie nodded. "I want to see the part where I actually began to transform."
"Where's Lane?" asked Kim, as she looked around.
"She's with Carla. I thought it best if she wasn't here when Hallie watched this," explained Alex. He then pressed the play button.
Hallie sat quietly as she watched the scenes of herself tied down on the lab table. She also felt Kim's arm around her for support.
"Here's where it starts," stated Hallie, almost more to herself.
They watched as Lane began to insert the dildo into Harry, who began to exclaim in what sounded like gibberish.
"Do you understand what you're saying?" asked Kim.
Hallie nodded. "It's basically a Minoan curse. I think the English equivalent is something along the lines of having sex with yourself and to…."
"Okay, okay, I get the point," interrupted Kim with a grin on her face.
"There! Look at the glow!" pointed out Hallie. She stared at the image. The video was shot through a nightscope, which meant that everything was green. Still, the glow of the entities was clearly seen. Harry was bathed in a light and, in what seemed like an instant, he became Hallie.
"It only took two seconds from the time the lights covered you until you were a woman," stated Alex.
"I know that it took much longer. I remember every detail," remarked Hallie.
"I don't deny what you experienced," answered Alex.
They watched the tape a few more times, until Hallie saw something very interesting. "Look, you can see that there are three lights, not one."
Kim and Alex nodded in agreement.
"I wonder who and what they really are?" stated Kim.
"I don't think we'll find out definitely soon," replied Hallie, " but I'm sure they are the three goddesses from the fresco."
Chapter 37
Hallie stared at the ceiling of her bedroom as she lay in bed. She had a lot on her mind. She thought about how simple her life had been before this summer. She wasn't just pondering about her transformation, there was everything else concerning it. She didn't believe that the beings that changed her were actual goddesses, but as to what they were, she had no idea. It was very humbling to know that there were beings out there who were so much more advanced, she thought.
Hallie didn't deny that many good things had come out of her transformation. First, she had a real family. Carla and Alex had shown her more love in the past few weeks than she had known in her entire life with her birth parents.
Then there was Kim. There was real love between them. Hallie just smiled every time she thought about Kim. She got tingles thinking about Saturday and how they would be alone. Her hand was soon rubbing her nipples as she thought about the lovely young woman she was so in love with.
Lane was still a problem. Hallie felt a growing internal conflict. Part of her still didn't trust Lane; still, she sensed that Lane felt genuinely bad about what had happened. She did notice that Alex hadn't fully disclosed the location of the site to Lane. The spot Alex had pointed to on the map was actually several miles from the actual location where the fresco had been found. Hallie didn't know how she knew this, but she just did. It was like how she could read and speak an unknown dead language.
Hallie then thought about her physical transformation. It wasn't so bad being a woman. Granted, she was in a safe, isolated environment. It would be very different when she returned to school in the fall. The good thing was that she would be working with Alex. He had told her that he had cleared that with the university. The head of the department was a little shocked that one of his students had changed gender. However, he accepted Alex's promise that it wouldn't cause any problems. Hallie smiled at what Alex had said about the department head. Alex said that not all the fossils were located in display cases.
Sleep eventually overwhelmed Hallie and she drifted off.
Chapter 38
Carla woke up early and went downstairs to make some coffee. She was surprised to see that Hallie was already up. She saw Hallie sitting out on the dock and she walked out to see if everything was okay. She could see that Hallie was still in her pjs.
Hallie heard Carla's footsteps on the dock and turned around. "Good morning."
"Good morning, dear. Is everything all right?" asked Carla.
"They came back last night," stated Hallie softly, as she stared off in the distance.
"Who came back?" asked Carla, as she sat down next to Hallie, whose long hair was blowing gently in the morning breeze.
"The goddesses. They came into my room last night," stated Hallie, who continued to stare out across the water.
"You had a dream, that's all," comforted Carla.
Hallie shook her head no. "Carla, it wasn't a dream. It was too realistic. They actually took me back in time. I know this sounds silly, but they took me back and showed me the Minoan civilization. Carla, it was incredible! I could feel the sun on my shoulders and the sand beneath my feet. I could smell the food cooking in the kitchens. The goddesses took me around different Minoan cities. They had a vibrant, advanced culture. It was far more advanced than what we've suspected."
Hallie went on to describe in vivid detail what she had seen in her visions.
"What else did you see?" asked Carla. She was stunned by the accuracy of Hallie's descriptions.
"They took me around to different sites related to the cult. I saw the temple where the transformations took place. It was on the island of Thera," answered Hallie.
"Thera? You sure?" asked Carla.
Hallie nodded. "The residents knew that their island was going to blow up. I watched as they evacuated the island. They knew that the end was coming, but there was no panic. It was an orderly mass departure of an entire city. I was then transported by the goddesses back to Crete, and watched as the volcano blew half the island into dust. It was horrific. I swear that I could feel the land shake after the explosion, and feel the volcanic dust settle on my body. There was also a strong odor of sulfur in the air. I've seen pictures of Mount St. Helens blowing up, and compared to Thera, it was nothing."
"They say that Thera's explosion was even bigger than Krakatoa. I believe that explosion killed over 35,000 people."
Hallie nodded. "I can believe it. The tsunamis that followed Thera exploding swallowed whole coastal towns. The ash in the sky also hurt the crops. Many people died due to starvation. It didn't destroy the Minoan culture, but it weakened it. They were eventually conquered by a race far inferior in so many ways. It would take thousands of years to relearn what was lost when Minoa fell. Much has been lost forever."
Carla noted the sadness in Hallie's voice.
"I also know something else. The destruction of Minoa wasn't Atlantis," stated Hallie. "They were the descendants of the original Atlantis survivors. Don't ask me how I know this, but I just do. Also, I know now that those original survivors spread out all over the world."
Carla didn't say a word.
"I think the goddesses showed me this so I would better understand the gift that I have been given and better appreciate my heritage," continued Hallie.
"Is that how you look upon your transformation?" asked Carla, as she brushed Hallie's hair out of her face. "Do you see it as a gift now?"
Hallie nodded. "I'm a daughter of the goddess. I'm in touch with a civilization that was destroyed thousands of years ago. Thanks to my metamorphosis, I now have a family and a person very dear to me. I've sat out here since before dawn thinking about this."
Carla nodded. "It must have been a very realistic dream to affect you so much."
Hallie took a deep breath and lifted up the bottom of her foot and showed it to Carla. It was covered in gray dust. Hallie wiped some of the ash off with her hand and handed it to Carla. Carla took it and sniffed it. She recoiled from the odor; there was a strong stench of sulfur. She stared at Hallie, as if she was hoping this was some sort of joke.
"I can't explain it either. Part of me is amazed and the other half of me is terrified."
Carla leaned over and hugged Hallie tightly.
They then walked back into the house together.
Chapter 39
"Do you mind if I have this dust analyzed, Hallie? Don't worry, I'll keep the origin secret," asked Alex.
Hallie shook her head no, as she took a bite of her pancakes.
Kim and Lane were still upstairs asleep.
"Do me a favor and keep this between us for now? I'll tell Kim, but I'd rather not tell Lane right now. I still don't trust her completely," asked Hallie.
"Okay," answered Alex.
"There is another reason why I don't want to tell Lane. The goddesses told me that Lane must show atonement for her misuse of their instrument. It was only to be used on the willing. She must do something soon. I'm afraid of what they might do to her for committing desecration," stated Hallie.
"Well, we may have a solution that might appease you and the goddesses. Tomorrow, we're taking Lane to see Joan," announced Carla.
"She's connected with a volunteer organization that provides medical assistance to poor and destitute people," added Alex.
"So what would Lane have to do?" asked Hallie.
"The doctors need help in all areas. However, Lane isn't going to have a cushy desk job. She'll be assigned to help in the wards. She'll also be helping homebound and bedridden people by cooking meals for them, cleaning, running errands, things like that. Lane has to learn to care about other people," answered Carla.
"How long will she have to do it?" asked Hallie.
"The entire school year," replied Carla.
Hallie didn't answer at first. "I guess that's acceptable. What happens if she refuses?"
"I don't think she will. Believe it or not, she does know that she was wrong," answered Alex.
Hallie nodded.
"Good morning, everyone," announced Kim, as she sat down for breakfast.
Carla passed the platter with the pancakes to Kim.
"Thank you. Hey, did anyone else see those lights last night?"
Carla, Alex, and Hallie immediately turned and looked at Kim.
"What did you see?" asked Hallie.
"I woke up and saw three or four streaks of blue light fly by my window. I didn't have my glasses on and, by the time I did, the lights were gone. I drifted back to sleep and then I woke up an hour later and saw them again. This time there were definitely three streaks of light. What do you think it was?" asked Kim.
"I'll tell you after you eat," stated Hallie, as she gave Carla and Alex a smile.
Chapter 40
"Do you really think that the goddesses took you back to Minoa?" asked Kim.
"Yes. I have no other explanation for what happened. I think that they wanted me to see the culture I'm studying."
"Damn, the next time they show up, ask if you can bring a friend. I'd love to see what you just described," replied Kim.
"So, do you believe me?" asked Hallie.
Kim laughed. "Of course. After all, I watched a videotape of you being transformed into a woman, so what's so unbelievable about you visiting a civilization that's thousands of years old."
"I can't get the image of Thera blowing up out of my mind. It was horrifying," added Hallie. She then told Kim about Lane, the goddesses' threat, and Joan.
"Do you feel it's enough?" asked Kim.
"I guess so. She's also getting us funding for the dig in Crete next year. How do you feel, knowing that these goddesses exist?" asked Hallie.
"Like you, I don't really think they're deities. Highly advanced beings? Yes. But goddesses? I don't think so. I find it rather refreshing knowing that there are creatures far more advanced than us," answered Kim.
Hallie nodded. "I believe that they don't mean us any harm. In some ways, I think that they feel responsible for my transformation, and maybe that's why I can read and speak Minoan."
"What about the threat to Lane?" asked Kim.
"I don't think they'd kill her or anything like that. However, I know they have the ability to make her life really unpleasant."
"Well, we'd better get into the lab, Alex will wonder where we've been."
Hallie threw herself into her research. She found that the museum in Sitia had many Minoan objects that appeared to have the new language etched into them. Hallie knew she had to go to that museum. She also knew she had to take a side trip to Thera, or Santorin as it was called today.
Hallie then began to record what she had seen in her dream, or whatever it was. She was just finishing up when Alex called her over to his desk.
"I did a quick check of the sample you gave me. It's definitely volcanic. I'm mailing a sample to a geologist friend and asking him to identify it," stated Alex.
"How do you feel about all this?" asked Hallie softly.
"Let's go for a walk," he suggested.
They walked outside and headed along the rocky shoreline.
"Hallie, I'm a man of science. I've studied ancient civilizations my whole life and have tried to look at mysteries with a logical mind. In that time, I've seen countless things that I cannot explain. During my first summer as a grad student, I was assisting in a dig in Greece. We were excavating a site near Thermopylae. It was the middle of the afternoon and all my associates had gone back to the camp to take a siesta. I continued to work. There was a strange stillness in the air and I then got the weird feeling that I wasn't alone. I looked up and saw a solitary figure standing on a hill maybe 100 yards away. He was dressed in hoplite armor and had a long, flowing red cape. He was armed with a sword and spear. I could see the sun shine off his bronze armor and large round shield. He stared at me for maybe a minute before he walked away, without saying a word," stated Alex.
Hallie listened intently as they walked along.
"I naturally suspected he was a re-enactor portraying a Spartan. After all, we were very close to the site of the great battle fought in 480 BC. I wondered if he was there to give the tourists a good show. I hurriedly walked up the hill, and for a moment thought I saw an entire column of hoplite soldiers marching up the coast road. I blinked and then they were gone," continued Alex.
"What happened then?"
"Naturally, I was spooked. I looked around for any evidence of the solider that I had seen, but found none. I shrugged it off as a heat induced hallucination. As I headed slowly back to camp and ran into my professor, my expression must have told him that I had seen something out of the ordinary. He smiled and asked me if I had seen the Spartans."
"Really?" asked Hallie.
Alex nodded. "I told him what I saw. He just stood there and smiled. He told me that he had seen something very similar ten years earlier. We went back to his tent and he took out a bottle of 30-year-old scotch and we had a toast to the three hundred Spartans."
"That's amazing," replied Hallie.
"So, the answer is yes. I believe you. I'm also envious of you. I would love to have seen Minoa at its peak," replied Alex, as he put his arm around Hallie.
"I wish I could have seen your Spartans," replied Hallie. She closed her eyes and tried to imagine seeing the soldiers marching to battle.
"Now you know why I like Dirk Pitt stories so much!" laughed Alex.
"Do you have any other stories?" asked Hallie.
"Yes, but we'll save those for another time," replied Alex, as they walked back to the house.
Chapter 41
Saturday morning Alex, Carla, and Lane left the island. Hallie and Kim stood on the dock and waved goodbye. Inside, Hallie could barely contain her excitement as she was finally going to be alone with Kim.
As they walked back to the house, they put their arms around each other. Kim led Hallie upstairs and into her bedroom.
They sat down on the bed next to each other and Kim gave Hallie a light kiss on the cheek.
"Alone at last," sighed Kim. "Do you think your supernatural guardians will interrupt us?"
Hallie giggled. "I'm sure they'll leave us alone."
Kim leaned over and kissed Hallie gently on her lips. As they kissed, Kim pulled the scrunchie out of Hallie's hair. "I love the feel of your hair."
Hallie giggled again.
"We have all day, there is no rush. You'll find this so much more satisfying than what you've experienced before," whispered Kim.
Hallie nodded and they began to kiss each other gently. Kim began to slowly unbutton Hallie's top. Hallie giggled again.
"What's so funny?" whispered Kim.
"I'm just remembering how I once thought of you as shy, and here you are expertly undressing me," replied Hallie.
"Shy, huh? Well, my bewitched beauty, you'll pay for that mistake in judgment!" laughed Kim
A moment later Hallie's top was off and Kim was in the process of removing Hallie's bra.
"Girl, you really need to upgrade your wardrobe. Your body is too nice to be wearing such plain lingerie," commented Kim, as her hands passed gently over Hallie's breasts.
Hallie twitched slightly as Kim's hand passed over her erect nipples. Kim smiled at Hallie's reaction. "That was pretty cool."
Hallie's breathing was getting heavier as she lay back on the bed.
Kim sat next to her and pulled off her t-shirt and slowly removed her bra.
Hallie was a little taken back by the fact that Kim was taking the dominant role, but she was enjoying herself too much to complain. Besides, Kim seems to know what she's doing, thought Hallie.
Kim lay next to Hallie and they began to run their fingers over each other's breasts. Even though Hallie was taller, Kim had slightly bigger breasts. Hallie followed Kim's lead and made slight circles around Kim's nipples.
Kim nodded. "That's right, slowly and sensually. Forget what you learned as a man."
They began to kiss again, as they continued to work on each other's breasts.
Hallie felt herself getting wet between her legs. It was a pleasant new experience, and it would not be the last time she would feel this way.
Eventually, Kim reached down and began to remove Hallie's shorts and panties. She then stripped off her shorts.
"Lay back and learn," cooed Kim to Hallie.
Hallie nodded and was about to speak, but was stopped by Kim, who shook her head no. Kim began to run her hand across Hallie's vagina, who began to gasp from pleasure. Kim smiled and repeated the act.
Hallie lost all track of time as Kim slowly began to penetrate her. Her whole body felt alive as Kim stimulated parts of her body she didn't even know she had. Soon Kim guided Hallie's hand to her own vagina. Hallie began to copy the moves that Kim had used on her. Judging by Kim's reaction, Hallie knew she was doing a good job.
They began to increase the pace and soon they had worked each other to a feverish pitch. Hallie had never known sex could be so good and so mutual. They soon reached the pinnacle and climaxed. Hallie's moans turned into screams of pleasure as she came. What was amazing was the wave upon wave of delight that swept through her body. The whole time she held onto Kim, who was also in the throes of an orgasm. They slowly came down together, and lay quietly in each other's arms.
Another difference that Hallie noted was that she still wanted to be touched, unlike her experience of sex as a male. They gently kissed and caressed each other.
"Well?" whispered Kim.
"No comparison," replied Hallie, with a smile. "I had no idea."
Kim nodded.
Hallie looked at the clock on the nightstand. They had been making love for over two hours.
"Next time, I'll use a vibrator on you," commented Kim.
"You own one?" asked Hallie innocently.
Kim laughed. "No, I don't own one. I own three!"
Hallie joined in the joke.
"I'll have to get you one. Trust me, you'll love it!"
"Have you always known you were a lesbian?" asked Hallie.
"No. I dated boys, but it never clicked. A girl at a party in high school seduced me. Everything became crystal clear. I've never been with a male since," replied Kim. "Do you have desires for men?"
"Right after I was transformed, I thought about a guy back at school while I masturbated," confessed Hallie.
"How did it feel?" asked Kim.
Hallie thought about her answer.
"Be honest. Just because I don't like men doesn't mean that you can't," added Kim.
"I liked the idea of it. I have to admit that I'm curious how it will feel. I also like the idea of my lover being in charge," replied Hallie.
Kim nodded and giggled. "I noticed!"
Hallie smiled back. "Part of me is afraid of having sex with a man. Deep down, I know that it will be the last bridge to cross."
"That makes sense. I can image that this is a confusing experience."
"But at the same time, the rest of me desires the sensation of having sex with a man," continued Hallie.
"Not that you need my permission or anything, but I don't have a problem with you being with a man. Just as long as you take the necessary precautions."
"Really?"
"Sure, you need to experience your new identity. However, just get this into your head. I don't do threesomes!"
Hallie laughed. "You sure?"
"Not if a man is involved!"
They laughed again.
"Come on, we'd better get cleaned up. They should be back in a couple of hours," stated Kim as she got up.
Hallie flashed Kim her best bedroom eyes. "We still have time."
"Oh, I'm not done with you, my pet! I'm just taking you into the shower!
Chapter 42
"That was a wonderful shower," exclaimed Hallie as she dried her hair.
"Next time we'll take a bath!" remarked Kim.
"I always thought that lesbians were into oral sex," remarked Hallie.
"Who said we weren't?" replied Kim with a wink.
Hallie laughed.
"I just didn't want to overwhelm you, being it was our first time together," continued Kim. "Just be ready the next time!"
A short time later, they were downstairs sitting on the deck, drinking beer. Kim looked out across the water. "I think I see the boat. They should be here in fifteen minutes."
"I wonder how their meeting with Joan went," stated Hallie.
"Lane isn't stupid. I think she'll agree to whatever Carla and Alex come up with. I have another question for you; have you decided what you're going to do when we leave here in a few weeks?"
"I'm going back to campus. I will be Hallie Pappadimos. Alex has already cleared my new identity with the head of the department."
"What about your parents?"
Hallie sighed. "I suppose I need to tell them, even though they won't care."
"What if they want to see you?" asked Kim.
"They won't. But if they do, I'll cross that bridge when I come to it."
"Are you that sure of their reaction?"
Hallie nodded and took a sip of her beer.
"When will you tell them?"
"Never? No, I guess I could call them this weekend. I might as well get it out of the way," she remarked.
"You're afraid aren't you?" asked Kim, as she took Hallie's hand in hers.
"They are my parents. We've never been close, but I still don't like the idea of never seeing them again."
Kim nodded. "So what about when we get back to campus? Where are you going to live?"
"I forgot about that. I really don't want to go back to my old place. I guess I'll check for places in the campus paper," answered Hallie.
"Why not move in with me? I have a condo with an extra bedroom," stated Kim.
"How do you have a condo?" asked Hallie.
"My parents bought it when my brother started at state seven years ago. They felt it was cheaper over the long run. My brother transferred and my sister and I have had it the past five years and she graduated in June. When I graduate in another year, my dad plans on selling it. He expects to turn a handsome profit," replied Kim.
"That's very generous of you."
"Not really. I want you close, and also I can't stand to be alone," answered Kim.
"Will your parents mind?" asked Hallie.
"No, besides I already told them that you were moving in with me."
Hallie laughed. "When did you tell them this?"
"Last week."
They were distracted by the sound of the boat as it approached the island. Hallie ran down to the dock and stood by to receive the lines.
"Welcome back," greeted Hallie. She noticed that Lane was very quiet.
"I picked up some lobsters for dinner," announced Carla.
Kim pretended to be upset. "Lobster? Again? Can't we have something else?"
"NO! You'll have lobster, or it's off to bed without dinner!" replied Alex with a big smile on his face.
"You want us to go get the seaweed?" asked Hallie.
"Yes, why don't you and Lane do it?" suggested Carla, as she stepped off the boat.
Hallie looked at Lane, who looked back and they shrugged their shoulders. "Why don't you go change and I'll get the bucket," stated Hallie.
A few minutes later the two girls walked down the island towards the tidal pools.
Hallie didn't say a word; instead she waited for Lane to make the first move.
It didn't take long. "I suppose you know about my punishment," remarked Lane.
"They told me a little bit about it," replied Hallie, as she picked up some seaweed.
"Are you okay with it?" asked Lane.
Hallie stopped and stood still. "I guess so. I don't know if there is an appropriate punishment for what you did. However, I'm willing to go along with the penance that Alex and Carla came up with."
"What about us?"
"I don't know. I still don't trust you. That will take time to rebuild," answered Hallie.
"I wish I could undo what I did," stated Lane.
Hallie stared at Lane. "I believe you."
"I promise that I won't betray you again," stated Lane.
"Promises are easy to make. Let's see if you follow through with your actions. Time will tell if you're really sincere."
Lane nodded. "Honest response."
"Okay, we'd better get this seaweed back to Carla."
"I'll take the bucket," offered Lane as she extended her hand.
"Okay," replied Hallie, as she handed the bucket to Lane. She felt some sympathy for Lane, but not enough to give her a total pardon. Maybe in time they could become friends again.
Chapter 43
For the next few weeks, Hallie worked on a translation of both Linear A and the secret language, which Alex had dubbed Linear H, after Hallie. Linear H was very interesting as it was designed to be a hidden language. It was designed to blend in with the artwork of the object that it had been written on. Once you were aware of Linear H, it was very easy to spot.
Most of the messages were prayers and blessings. The prayers were addressed to the three goddesses. Hallie found one vase that had a prayer of blessing for a newborn child. The tenderness expressed in the blessing touched Hallie deeply. Being able to read these messages allowed Hallie to gain a deeper insight into the soul of the people of this culture.
For the time being, Hallie's discoveries had to remain secret. They needed to find archeological proof to back up the knowledge that the goddesses had given Hallie. Still, she worked on compiling a document that could be used to translate the two languages.
Hallie continued to adapt and grow into her new life. She still dressed mainly in shorts, jeans, and t-shirts, although Kim was getting her to dress up a little more fancy when they went into town. Hallie still felt uneasy about wearing makeup, and Kim didn't press her on it.
Their romance continued to progress. They made no effort to hide their affection for each other while on the island. Even Lane admitted that they made a nice couple.
All too soon they reached the last week of their summer on the island and they began to make preparations to head back to school.
"I'm really going to miss this place," sighed Hallie as she helped Alex pack up some books in the lab.
"I feel the same way. You're always welcome here," stated Alex.
"Thanks."
"Mail's here!" announced Kim, as she walked into the lab. She handed Alex several letters.
He began to sort through the letters and suddenly he pulled one out. He picked up his letter opener and slit open the envelope. Without a word he pulled out the letter and read it.
"This is from my geologist friend. He analyzed the ash from your journey," announced Alex.
Hallie and Kim stood there anxiously awaiting his answer. Hallie felt the same sense of anxiety in the pit of her stomach as she did when she received a paper back from a professor.
"Unbelievable! He confirms that not only is it volcanic ash, but from the eastern Mediterranean, most likely from the Thera eruption!" announced Alex triumphantly.
Kim and Hallie hugged him.
Then it hit Hallie that she really had been transported back in time.
"Promise me that, if they take you back again, you'll bring me along!" begged Kim.
Hallie nodded. "I'm going to take a walk."
"You want company?" asked Kim.
Hallie nodded and the two girls walked off together.
Alex reread the letter and then looked at the rest of the mail. He opened a large envelope and dumped out its contents. He inspected each item and then put them back in the envelope. He would save this for later.
Chapter 44
"I'd thought you be more excited. This confirms your story," said Kim, as they walked down to the rocks.
"Kim, this scares me. I mean, a few months ago I was just a grad student. Now I'm dealing with powers that are way beyond my comprehension. I wonder what other plans they have for me," replied Hallie.
"There's no sense in worrying about something that is beyond your control. Look, you're the one who said that you don't feel they mean you any harm. I think that they do have plans for you. Maybe you'll be the one to tell the story of the Minoans?" suggested Kim.
Hallie nodded as she sat down on the big rock that had become her thinking place. Kim sat down next to her.
"Do you like being a girl?" asked Kim.
Hallie shrugged her shoulders. "I really don't feel that different. Well, you know what I mean. I like some of it. I like how I can show my emotions more. There's no beating the sexual sensations. I don't like the fact that I have to start a new identity. I also don't like my period."
"Nobody does," laughed Kim.
"I think what's worst is all the confusion I'm having. I know I've changed. My sexual preferences have changed. I now find men attractive, in addition to women," added Hallie.
"And they'll find you attractive."
Hallie smiled. "It's going to be a stressful fall. I'm worried that I'm going to have to be on constant guard, so that no one makes me."
"Personally I think you're worrying over nothing. You're all woman. But, I really think you should pay greater attention to your appearance," suggested Kim.
"What's wrong with my appearance?" asked Hallie.
"You need to use makeup. You don't need to go supermodel or anything like that, but you should learn to use eye shadow, mascara, and lipstick. Also you need to take better care of your nails."
"Anything else?" asked Hallie.
"Now that you mention it, yes! You look fabulous in skirts, you should wear them more often. Also, you need to add some jewelry to your wardrobe," added Kim.
"I don't see what difference it will make," stated Hallie.
"My dear Hallie, if you want to blend in, you need to dress appropriately. I'll help you pick out some things. I'll also help you with your makeup. Tomorrow we'll go into town and pick out some more outfits for you."
"The goddesses must have forgotten to give me the shopping gene. But I'll do it, if only because I love you so much," replied Hallie.
"Deal. We'll also get our nails done. You'll love getting a manicure!"
"I'll be the judge of that," answered Hallie, who leaned over and kissed Kim.
"Trust me. Besides I want you looking fabulous when I take you to see my parents!"
Hallie laughed. "What're you talking about?"
"Well, we're driving back down to college. We can spend the night at my house. I want them to meet you. Please?" pleaded Kim.
Hallie nodded. "Why not?"
Kim threw her arms around Hallie and gave her a long kiss.
Chapter 45
The next day Hallie followed Kim around from one store to another. Shopping didn't excite Hallie all that much, as it was just a way to acquire needed things. However, she was impressed with Kim's ability to shop.
Hallie was wearing a short denim skirt, a green sleeveless top, and sandals. Her hair was braided. Kim was very pleased that Hallie was wearing a skirt.
"These rings will look fantastic on you," commented Kim.
Hallie tried them on. She held out her hand and admired the silver rings. "They do look nice."
"Nice? That's all you can say?" laughed Kim.
They picked out a few silver bracelets and a necklace. Kim insisted that Hallie wear them immediately.
"We also need to replace that big ugly watch," remarked Kim, as she began to look at the watch display. "I can't believe that you're still wearing a guy's watch."
"I feel naked without a watch. Besides, the goddesses only changed me, they didn't touch my wardrobe."
Kim laughed. "Maybe you can suggest that they do that in the next version of the dildo."
They ended up buying two watches, one for everyday use and one for dress up.
"See that wasn't so hard," commented Kim with a laugh. "You don't need to spend a lot of money to look good."
Hallie had to admit that the jewelry did look nice.
They also picked out a few pairs of earrings, although Hallie's ears weren't quite healed yet.
The next stop was to get their nails done. Hallie had to admit that it was nice being pampered. The dusky rose shade of polish that Kim suggested really did go nicely with her Mediterranean complexion.
"When we get back to campus, you'll have to go with me and get a facial. It's so relaxing," remarked Kim. "The last stop we'll make is to pick you out some makeup."
As they walked down the makeup aisle, Hallie felt strange, as if she was an intruder. Kim sensed her apprehension and tried to make her feel more at ease.
"Relax. No one knows the truth about you," whispered Kim. "Besides, you don't need that much makeup."
Hallie nodded slightly.
Thirty minutes later they were headed back to the boat.
"I'll show you how to do your makeup. The trick is to make it look like you're not wearing any makeup," explained Kim.
"So, what's the point of wearing any in the first place?" asked Hallie.
"I'll ignore that last comment. Come, on we'd better head back to the island."
Hallie nodded and walked with Kim to the boat.
Chapter 46
The last night on the island was always a celebration. Carla always cooked a great feast. Alex said that the dinner was a chance to solidify their friendships and to review their accomplishments.
"I know this summer was special in so many ways. We cannot ignore what happened to you, Hallie. However, your transformation has also affected the rest of us," explained Alex.
They were spending the morning in the lab, boxing up the last of the papers that would be shipped back to the university. Carla had taken the boat into town to pick up everything she needed for a real Maine clambake, which would, of course, include some of Carla's personal touches.
"I understand. I have a question, what're you doing with the jars and dildo?" asked Hallie.
"I'm personally taking them back to the university. They will be kept safe," promised Alex.
"Thank you. I don't want the dildo to fall into the wrong hands," remarked Hallie.
Alex nodded. "Somehow, I doubt that it will. I feel that your goddesses will not allow that to happen again."
Hallie nodded. "I suppose you're right. They're aware that we have it."
"Have you had any other visits from them?" asked Alex.
Hallie shook her head no. "I suspect that they aren't finished with me."
"I just want you to know that the object is yours anytime you want it," stated Alex.
Hallie smiled back at him. "I appreciate that, but I don't really have a use for it."
"Maybe not today, but someday you may want it."
Hallie thought about what he had said. Deep down, she knew he was right. "I'll leave it in your custody for now."
"Fair enough."
Hallie then went back to packing up her papers. She noticed the box that she had set aside had a book inside. She reached inside the box and picked it up. It was an English-Greek dictionary. She looked over at Alex.
"I thought you could use it," he stated.
"Thank you," replied Hallie, who walked over and kissed him on the cheek. The act felt perfectly natural.
"I think you'll enjoy learning Greek. It will also be very helpful on our dig next summer," added Alex.
"Does that mean that you got permission?" asked an anxious Hallie.
"I was saving the news for tonight. Yes, we have permission. Stefanos called last night to confirm the news."
Hallie gave Alex a very enthusiastic hug.
"This is so cool!" she exclaimed.
Alex smiled. "You'd better get back to work. We need to ship these boxes off this afternoon."
Hallie nodded. "So, when will you be back on campus?"
"Not for a few weeks. Carla and I are going to spend some time together here on the island. I promised her that I wouldn't sneak away and work, so that's why I need to have my notes shipped today."
"That's sweet," replied Hallie. "I'll miss you and Carla."
"Hallie, you're family now. Carla and I will expect you at our home for dinner on a regular basis."
Hallie fought back her tears at hearing the word family.
"Thanks. Oh, I'm finally calling my parents this afternoon to tell them that I'm now Hallie."
"How do you feel about it?"
"Scared, but since we're not close right now, it won't make a huge difference in my life."
Alex cocked his head to one side. "I know that this is more important to you than what you're letting on. If you want to talk about it later, you know where to find me."
"Thanks."
Chapter 47
After lunch, Alex gathered his three assistants. "I know that you were all disappointed that we didn't go to the Aegean for an actual dig this summer. Here's your only chance for a dig this summer," he said with a twinkle in his eye. He handed out a spade to Lane, a heavy spading fork to Halley, and a long crowbar to Kim. "Follow me, we're going to dig the pit for tonight's clambake."
Alex led them to the only beach on the island. It was mostly loose, small rocks with gravelly sand in between them. He picked a spot just far enough above the tideline that their pit would be damp, but not have water seeping into it, then told them that they needed a pit about two feet in diameter, and about fifteen inches deep. Once they had the hole excavated, they were to line the bottom and sides with round rocks.
They'd already spent time the previous few evenings gathering driftwood and piling it near the beach. Hallie had thought it was for a bonfire, but now it became the fuel in the clambake pit. Alex started a fire, and then instructed Lane to keep it burning hot, but not outside the pit. He told her that Hallie and Kim had chores in the house, but they'd be back in an hour or so to take their turn with the fire.
Hallie didn't say a word on their way back to the house. Kim sensed her lover's anxiety, and without a word took Hallie's hand into her own. They walked into the house together and were greeted by Carla.
"You feel up to this, Hallie?" asked Carla.
Hallie nodded. "I have to do it."
"Who're you calling first?" asked Kim.
"My dad," replied Hallie.
They were sitting together on the couch in the living room. Hallie took a deep breath and dialed her dad's number. She was half hoping that she would get his answering service. On the third ring her dad picked up the phone.
"Dad, I need to tell you something," stated Hallie. For the next ten minutes she told him that she was now Hallie and was going to get SRS.
"Are you sure?" he asked.
Hallie was caught off guard by his concern. She couldn't remember the last time he had asked her how she felt.
"Yes. I know this is the right path for me," she replied.
"What about school? I hope this doesn't mean that you're giving up on your career?" he asked.
"No, Dad. I'm sticking with being an archeologist. I've already been selected to go on a dig next summer."
"Good for you. Hallie, huh? Nice name. Hell, I've never been much of a father, so I'm not about to start telling you how to run your life now. If you need anything, you let me know."
"Don't worry about me interfering with your life. I just wanted you to know…."
"Harry…. I mean Hallie; look, I just want you to be happy. Hell, in my line of work having a gay or transgendered kid is a career asset. Seriously, I just want you to be happy."
"Thanks, Dad," replied Hallie, a single tear began to roll down her cheek.
"You keep in touch. If your mother gives you any shit about this, let me know. I'll cut back on her alimony!"
Hallie laughed. "Thanks again, Dad."
"Take care, Hallie. You know, this could make a good movie!"
They talked for a few more minutes and then Hallie hung up the phone.
"Well, that sounded like it went pretty well," remarked Carla.
"I'm stunned. That was the single most personal moment I've ever had with him!" exclaimed Hallie.
"You up for the next call?" asked Kim.
Hallie nodded and dialed her mom's number. On the second ring her mom picked up the phone.
As with her father, Hallie explained to her mom what she was doing.
There was a long silence on the other end of the phone. "Harry, is this some sort of joke? Tell me this is just some twisted way of getting back at us for being less than perfect parents."
"It's not a joke, Mom. I'm Hallie now," she answered.
For the next twenty minutes they argued back and forth. Hallie's mom tried to talk her out of the change, unaware that the change had occurred weeks ago.
"Have you thought about your future?"
"Yes, Mom, I have. I've already talked to the university and they're cool about it."
"Have you told your father yet?"
"Yes. I just got off the phone with him."
"I suppose he's already writing up a script!"
Hallie laughed slightly in spite of herself.
"Harry, do me a favor and don't come around here. I have an image to uphold. If you want to see me, we'll pick a neutral site. I still love you, but my friends wouldn't understand," stated Hallie's mom.
"It's Hallie now. Thanks for being so understanding. I wouldn't want to embarrass you!" replied a very sarcastic Hallie.
"I just can't imagine why you would want to be a girl!"
"It's rather difficult to explain."
"I'm sure it is. I think you're making a huge mistake. I guess you're just following our example. Your father and I screwed up our lives, so you're entitled to screw up yours. But it's your life and you're an adult, so you don't need my permission."
"That's the first thing we've agreed on," answered Hallie.
"I have to go. We can talk about this later?" she stated and then she hung up the phone before Hallie could reply.
Hallie let out a long sigh, as she set down the phone. "She's more worried about her own image. On the plus side, it's not as if I'm losing anything."
Carla handed Hallie a box of tissues. Hallie tried to smile, but that just brought on the tears faster. Carla and Kim hugged Hallie as she cried.
"I don't know why I'm crying, we weren't that close," sniffed Hallie. "I mean it works out better if she rejects me, no difficult questions for me to answer. Still I feel rotten about her reaction."
"I'd say it's because you're human," comforted Kim, as she wiped a tear gently from Hallie's face.
"Well, at least I got that out of the way," quipped Hallie, as she blew her nose.
Carla looked at her watch. "Well, I could use some help in getting the feast together, then you can spell Lane at the firepit."
Hallie stood up. "What can we do?"
"Come with me. I can use as much help as possible," replied Carla.
Chapter 48
"First we need to get the clams to clean themselves," Carla stated. She gave Hallie a big plastic bucket, and asked her to go get it half-filled with seawater.
When Hallie returned, Carla already had Kim slicing tomatoes, onions, peppers, and mushrooms. Carla had Hallie dump a big bag of small steamer clams into her bucket of seawater, and then had her add a big handful of cornmeal. She explained that the cornmeal would make the clams expel most of the sand and grit inside their shells, as well as empty the blackish waste from their stomachs.
Next, Carla had Hallie wash a batch of medium-sized fresh Maine potatoes, leaving them whole and unpeeled. By the time Hallie finished that, Kim was done with her slicing, so Carla sent them both out on the deck to prepare the corn. Each ear had the tough outer husks removed, then they peeled back the inner husks, removed the silk, pulled the husks back up, and set them all in another bucket with some fresh water to keep the ears moist.
By the time Kim and Hallie got back to the kitchen, all of the sliced veggies had disappeared into a series of ten big packets tightly wrapped in aluminum foil. Kim commented that the packets seemed way too big to just have the veggies in them.
"You're right, Kim," Carla replied with a secretive smile. "They have some surprise goodies in them as well. You'll find out what when we eat. Now, there's a big washtub with stuff in it out on the deck, as well as another empty bucket. You two can haul that out to the beach, and then send Lane back here to help me with the salad, appetizer, and dessert while you take your turn with the fire."
The washtub was covered with a damp, folded canvas tarp and was quite heavy, but they managed it easily by each taking one handle of the tub. Alex was already back out on the beach with Lane, and the fire was burning merrily. Kim and Hallie took turns tending the fire and going to get bucket after bucket of clean, wet seaweed. Alex informed them that he needed the whole washtub full of it. They were delighted, when they peeled back the canvas, to discover that there were five nice-sized lobsters in the bottom of the washtub. Alex said to dump the seaweed right on top of the lobsters, as it would keep them cool and fresh.
After about an hour, Alex said that they could stop adding wood to the fire, and that when the current wood was burnt down to coals they could begin assembling the clambake. They were all beginning to get thirsty, so Alex said they should go back to the house and begin hauling all the stuff needed out to the beach, including a big cooler of iced beer. Carla, Lane, Hallie, and Kim carried out the bucket of clams, the corn and potatoes, a big tray with Carla's secret packets, another foil-covered tray, and the cooler of beer.
The fire was now a bed of redly glowing coals, so Carla announced it was time to assemble the clambake, and then they could all have appetizers and beer while they waited for the food to cook in the pit. Alex raked the coals into an even layer across the bottom of the pit, and then had them cover the coals with a six-inch layer of damp seaweed. On top of this, Carla placed the potatoes and half of her foil-wrapped packets. Then came another couple inches of seaweed, topped with the lobsters and corn. Still more seaweed was covered with the clams and the final five foil-wrapped packets. A final thick layer of seaweed was added. Then Alex splashed a bucket of seawater over the top and had Hallie and Kim quickly cover the whole pit with the damp canvas tarp as the fragrant steam began to rise. They weighted the edges of the canvas down with stones, and then, finally, Alex passed out bottles of the crisp, chilled beer.
Carla's appetizer was simple and luscious. Small chunks of fragrantly ripe cantaloupe had been wrapped in thin slices of prosciutto ham – just right to whet their appetites without being filling.
Soon they could see the canvas beginning to rise and bulge as steam built up underneath it. Carla said that was proof they had gotten the rocks in the pit hot enough, and that another half-hour of cooking should finish the bake. She went back to the house to make the final preparations for serving, saying Alex knew how to disassemble the pit and transport everything back to the house.
When they finally pulled back the canvas, the rising aromatic steam gave their noses an appetizing promise of the goodness to come. They used several pairs of long tongs to first transfer much of the top layer of seaweed to the washtub. Then the food was sorted and arrayed over the seaweed to keep warm. Then everything was carried back to the house.
Carla had set out bowls of drawn butter and a plate of lemon wedges for the clams and lobster, and there was more of her wonderful herb and garlic butter for the potatoes and corn. Each of them got two of Carla's sealed packets. One contained a small halibut steak that had steamed with a slice of onion, sliced mushrooms, a sprig of fresh dill, and a pat of butter. The other contained chunks of chicken breast and sweet Italian sausage with tomato, onions, peppers, and garlic. There followed a long period with little conversation and many small sounds of pleasure and contentment.
A simple salad of mixed greens dressed with lemon juice and olive oil was just right for clearing their palates, and they were unanimous in wanting to postpone dessert for a while. Carla warned them not to wait too long, if they wanted their fresh blueberry pie to be warm enough to melt the vanilla ice cream.
"Carla, my love, you really outdid yourself this year," stated Alex, as he held her hand.
"Yes, Carla, it was excellent!" added Hallie.
"I concur!" stated Kim.
"Make it unanimous!" commented Lane, who began to applaud.
They all began to applaud. Carla smiled and took a bow. "Thank you, but you all contributed to making this meal special. There's also one special bonus of having a clambake – no pots to wash!"
"It goes without saying that this has been a very different summer. It forced us to look at the world differently, as we're now aware of forces beyond our comprehension. However, this summer isn't the end of the story, it's just the beginning. Next summer we will be in Crete to hopefully find out more about the cult and the goddesses," commented Alex.
Hallie sat there nodding. Kim was holding her hand.
"Hallie, Kim, Lane, you all worked hard this summer and you've exceeded the goals I set for you. But grades aren't the most important things in life. Lane, I hope you've learned an important lesson from your actions. I expect to you learn from your errors and move on with you life," continued Alex. "I look forward to working with all three of you this year as we prepare for the Crete trip."
Lane sat there in silence. At least she was still included in the group. She debated apologizing to Hallie again, but decided against it. She would do her penance and hope that Hallie would one day forgive her.
"Finally, I have something to give Hallie. I received these the other day," stated Alex, as he handed Hallie a large envelope.
She took it from him and reached inside and pulled out several official documents. There were a driver's license, a birth certificate, a passport, and several papers certifying Hallie's official name change.
Hallie was speechless as she stared at the documents. It was one of those real moments when everything became crystal clear. She stared at her name on the documents; her identity was confirmed, and she was now Hallie Thorn Pappadimos.
"Well?" asked Kim.
It took Hallie a moment before she could speak. Even when she did, her voice was very light and soft. "Thank you."
Chapter 49
Three weeks later, Kim arrived home and walked into her condo. She was pleased to see that Hallie was already home. School hadn't even started yet, but they were already spending a lot of time in the library.
Kim walked into the living room and was surprised to see that there were dozens of candles lit around the room. There was also the sweet smell of incense burning. She also noticed an open bottle of wine sitting on the coffee table with two glasses next to it.
"Hallie?" Kim called out as she set her bags down.
"Stay there, I'll be right out," answered Hallie.
Kim wondered what was up, as she sat down on the couch.
A minute later Hallie walked into the room. Her posture was upright and proud, but there was an unmistakable sensuality in her measured gait.
Kim couldn't believe her eyes. Hallie was stunning! She was standing before Kim dressed as one of the Minoan priestesses they had seen in the frescos.
Hallie was wearing a long striped skirt. A cloth belt that wrapped around her waist held up the skirt. She was bare-breasted, just like the images of the Minoan women. She was wearing silver bracelets and chains to complete the outfit.
Her hair also matched the images in the frescos. Most of her hair was in a long ponytail, decorated with silver and pearl beads. She was also wearing a silver headband. There were two big long curls just in front of her ears.
Hallie's makeup also matched the Minoan women. Her eyes were outlined in black eyeliner, which only served to intensify the sultry aura she presented.
Kim let out a gasp. Her pulse raced, her nipples erected, and she could feel her nether lips engorge and moisten.
"Well?" asked Hallie.
"You're dazzling!" stammered Kim, as she stared at the Minoan beauty in front of her. "You're… you're literally enchanting!"
"I wanted to thank you for everything you've done for me," announced Hallie as she walked seductively closer to Kim. "I'm all yours!"
Kim stood up and they began to kiss. "How long have you planned this?" She could smell Hallie's perfume, and she breathed in the aroma of jasmine.
"Since before we left the island. It took me a while to find the right skirt," replied Hallie.
Kim ran her hands over Hallie's exposed breasts. Hallie trembled slightly as Kim's hands caressed her.
"Just one thing. I think you owe me that lesson in oral," stated Hallie with a wink.
Kim smiled and pulled Hallie down onto the couch. "Good things come to those who wait, my love." They then began to kiss again.
Unseen by either Kim or Hallie, the three goddesses watched in approval. They all agreed that they had been right to select these two. Everything was progressing as planned, and they were both on the path chosen for them. They were also pleased with the penance that had been selected for the one who desecrated the sacred object. They would not punish her further. For now, the goddesses would let them learn, live, and love.
The End
For now.
