To the frustration of Alex and Sarah, the three of them arrived at Aaron’s house, only to be told he was not at home. A relieved Kendra returned home, as did the others. Upon returning home his sister informed Alex that he needed to borrow one of her dresses to go to dinner tonight. Alex asked why they were going out to dinner and was informed that they were celebrating their mother’s latest courtroom victory and to go get a dress. He started heading for Katie’s room before remembering the dress he had bought that morning at the mall. He went to his room and put on the dress and went to show his sister.

He headed down the hall towards his sister’s room. On the way he passed the full-length mirror, where he stopped to look at himself. He couldn’t believe how much he had changed in only one week. He reminded himself that no matter what he looked like he was still a boy underneath the dress. With that thought still in mind he left the mirror and knocked on Katie’s door. The first thing she said when she opened the door was, "you look fantastic, where’d you get that dress?" Alex told her he got it at the mall. "I can’t believe that my brother was trying on dresses at the mall, this is so weird". "Hey! Sarah was there too". "Whatever, anyway you need to do something with your hair", Katie then proceeded to curl his hair. When he looked at himself in the mirror he knew that if he wanted he could be all girl.

Dinner went well and Jessie Summers was surprised to be given a box of chocolates and one dozen roses from her two ‘daughters’. As they waited for their desserts Alex was handed a pink envelope from his mother and told to open it. Alex knew what it was but was still shocked to see the birth certificate with his new name on it. Alex was told by his mom, "I was able to pull some strings today at work and also got you registered for school". "Uh… thanks, I guess". The rest of the evening was uneventful and went relatively well.

As time went on Alexis grew more confident in her new role until about 2 weeks later while her mother was enjoying her day off.

Alexis was lying around watching TV and playing video games, which was a familiar pattern of past summers. As she got up to a break from her N64 and get a snack her mom approached her. "Alexis before school let out you said you were going to get a job this summer and no matter how you look I still expect you to do so". "But mom" "no buts you said you would" "But I was going to be a life guard now that I’m qualified". "I don’t see why you still can’t do that". "But I’d have to wear a girls swim suit". "You have before, what’s the difference now". "That was different, I’d have to wear in public if I got the job". "Alex I want you to promise me that tomorrow you’ll go to the beach and inquire about the job, ok?" "Fine" For the rest of the day Alexis was to distracted to continue with her game.

Alexis got up the next morning, took of his nightie and got dressed for the day. Until about noon, Alexis did everything she could to put off going to the beach but finally gave up and called Sarah. "Hi Sarah! What’s up?" "Not much, you?" "I gotta go to the beach and apply for that life guarding job, wanna come?" "Sure, you want me to get Ken too?" "If you want but I don’t think ‘she’ will want to come" "what time I’ll meet you there at 1:30, k?" "All right, see you then, bye" "bye". Alexis watched a little more TV and ate some lunch. At 1:00 she went to her room to get ready to go.

Alexis arrived early at the beach and waited for Sarah and possibly Kendra to arrive. She looked at her watch and saw it was only 1:13 so she decided to go apply and be back by 1:30. She headed to the guard shack and asked to speak with Greg the head lifeguard. Greg approached and said, "Hi I’m Greg can I help you with anything?" "Yes, I want to apply for a life guarding job" "Are you qualified?" "Yes I have my papers here" "These papers are for a boy I taught last year, how did you get these?" "Umm…" "Well?" "…Cause I am that boy". After a lot of laughing Greg finally said to Alex, "There is no way that a cute little thing like you could be a guy, how stupid do you think I am?" "Well it’s a long story but I am a guy and can prove it if I have to. Here’s my birth certificate and as you can see all the information is the same as before except my name is changed." "Well the information does match up but I still have my doubts about it. However, we do need more guards and I was expecting Alex anyways. So what I’m trying to say is your hired, congratulations"

Greg took Alexis’ SIN number and gave her, her uniform before she left to meet Sarah. He was now almost positive that he could see her resemblance to Alex and made a note to call her mother after she left. Alexis got up to leave but just before she left the hut she turned back and said in Alex’s voice, "I really appreciate you understanding my situation, I’ll see you on Monday." After hearing this Greg was certain that this was Alex. Alex headed back to the beach entrance and saw Sarah and a grumpy looking Kendra Standing at the gate. As he approached, Sarah said, "So..?" "I got the job but I have to wear this," replied Alexis as she held up her new uniform. The three of them went in and enjoyed the rest of the day at the beach.

The weekend went smoothly and soon it was Monday and Alexis’ first day of work. She woke up early and got changed into her new swimsuit and pulled on her ‘Life Guard’ shirt over top. After a quick bowl of cereal he started towards the beach. When she got to the shack he checked his hours for the rest of the week and then went and punched in. Alex loved his job and had lots of fun doing it. This became the pattern for each week. Alexis would go to work, come home, eat, sleep, and then got to work again. I wasn’t until the end of August that he had to actually rescue someone. It was a young boy that was probably about 9 years old. He was unconscious when Alexis carried him on to the beach and started to give him mouth to mouth. After about a minute the boy started to breath and Alexis carried him to the shack to fill out an accident report. Alex learned that the boy’s name was Julian but likes Julie better. Julie’s sister came to the shack to get him but before he left he walked back over to Alexis, who was squatting down to look him in the eye. Julie said thanks to Alexis and gave her a peck on the cheek, which was returned with a kiss on the forehead from Alexis.

Alexis saw Julie almost everyday at work and soon learned that he lived right beside the beach. Julie was a little rambunctious but did everything Alex asked him. He even told Alexis the she was his hero. They talked a lot and became friends. Alexis meet Julie’s mom and she offered Alex the job of babysitting Julie after the beach close and school started. The beach was open for one more week and then it was time for Alex to go to his new high school. The Saturday before school started Alex went over to Julie’s house and was given all the information he would need to be the babysitter. Julie was looking forwards to having his ‘Hero’ baby-sit him. Sunday was full of worrying as Alex sat around fearing his first day of high school and his first year of school as a girl.
