That is exactly the reaction that should take place in most of these stories but instead the authors have the guys just standing there looking catatonic.

Now so much for the greater maturity of girls where this story is concerned. So much for their superior intellect. What the hell did they expect to happen? Something tells me his sister missed some prep work; mainly telling him what the hell was going on.

hmmmmnnnn I do not  agree with  most of the other comments , first of all I thought the ending was very realistic ,friends always  seem to screw up plans  especially very sentimental plans ........it happened to me  more than once . The only thing is I think his sister would have shut off the power so he would hear what she had to say , I know  I would  have !!!!
The two of them crying  , perfect !!! Him because  his  ego was damaged and he felt betrayed  , Monica because she realized  that the one guy that would do anything for her is now gone for good .

Now what the heck should he apologize for?
He went to a date expecting one girl right.
He dressed up as a baby girl?
Not because that was his dream, just hers.
He was meet by a room filled with girls laughing at him.

Why the h*ll should he apologize? For what??
And if I had a sister that stupid I would...

Having re-read and commented the sequel I thought I would put my two cents here too.

I think this is a good story and the ending was great too. Why should a story always include everything that happens? I can myself imagine that a) Joe commited suicide or runaway that night b) just waited for his parents to come home and told them everything and asked to be transferred to another school (maybe they moved to another town) c) he told his parents and they called Monica's and the other girls parents d) Joe simply kept quiet and became a recluse not taking to any of the girls or to his sister (and propably got teased as everyone in the school knew - in a big group of girls (or boys for that matter) there is always a tittler-tattler who would spill such juicy beans).

Everyone can quess more endings and that is at times the fun or interesting part of a story.

The only thing not feeling right was that Monica was crying in the end of the story. Having set Joe up to be laughed at she only had reason to gloat - one boy nicely humiliated!

Hasty Act?

You really did leave this story like this? No sequel and not even an answer or explanation for your readers?

GEEZ, what a screwed up ending to a great story. It seems to me you just got tired of writing it and wanted to go on to something else and ended it.

I do like some of your other stuff very much, but this? I had to re-write it myself so I could get to sleep!

I really enjoyed this story till the end.  I don't understand.  Monica obviously wanted to completely humiliate Joe, or she would not have had her friends at their meeting, nor would she have laughed at him.  It doesn't take a psychiatric degree to predict how he would react.  Why would she be crying.  That Joe had allowed himself to be humiliated so much by his sister showed how much he loved and trusted her.  No wonder he felt completely betrayed by both Carolyn and Monica.  Too many unanswered questions.  Please, a sequal.

I have to agree with Nellie, the ending was very depressing. It is interesting that when Joe got back home, he went onto his video games and started killing everyone. Were you trying to indicate that a humuliating situation like this could cause another Santee, Ca. episode.
I can possibly understand Monica's idea with dressing him up, probably trying to see if he would be a "maucho" jerk like the other boys she dated, or he would do what she asked. What I don't understand is why she invited the other girls. This would automatically cause humiliation and betrayal.
I just hope you add a sequel with a little more pleasant ending. It's hard to think that he would be left to feel total betrayal from the one he probably loved most, his sister.

I rather enjoyed the short story.  But I hope there is a sequel to answer some of the questions, that were not answered in this one?  First being, why the girls at the party were laughing? If it was supposed to be innocent.  Second, what will happen to Joe?  Will he be tormented for his actions?  I can't blame him for being angry.  It did seem that the person who he trusted most, his own sister, who I believe he loved & trusted most, who in the end seemed to do the same things the bullies in school did.  For that reason alone, I can not blame him for snapping.  And why was Monica sad or alone for that matter?  I hope if there is a sequel, it is a little more longer, and resolves all the unanswered questions, and Joe, Monica, and his Sister can work things out. For a happy ending.

A wonderful tale of actions and their consequences.  It has been a while since I have read such a delightful moral-based story.
This is one of those stories that should remain as it stands, making the reader think back and deciding the fate of the stories characters.
Keep up the excellent writing.

[Beware: possible spoiler.]

Was it that Monica wanted to see Joe dressed?  That she wanted
to start their relationship that way?  This wasn't clear, and it
wasn't clear to me why this was so important to her, why she
wouldn't meet him on any other terms.  A puzzling story, but
perhaps I missed something.

A very sad ending for an otherwise good story. It depressed me greatly to read that ending. For some reasons I have empathy for Joe.
The story was well written as is Ann's usual style.
