Princess Morgana (Morgan le Fay, the sorceress), wishing to have a son by her half-brother King Arthur, assumes the form of Queen Guenevere, lies with him, and in due course gives birth to Prince Modred. <br><br>When he is sixteen and she is in the process of choosing the right wife for the little bastard (he is, in both senses of the word) in order to further his claim to the throne, it is foretold that he will fall in love with and marry the Chatelaine of Beau Regard. This is Fleur, daughter of Sir Hugue of Beau Regard (anciently Cumalot) and one of the Knights of the Round Table. Morgana is furious, and is determined to prevent any such match, so she turns the sweet spoilt ten-year-old girl into a boy and whisks him off to her Castle of the Maidens in Scotland, to be the new turn-spit and chimney-sweep.
Meanwhile, Sir Hugue rides out in search of maidens in distress and falls foul of the witch Dame Melisande (Smelly Melly) who, though no maiden, is in urgent need of a knight such as he. When he finally escapes her toils, he heads north to fulfill his mission for Arthur: to inspect the maidens at Morgan le Fay's Castle of Maidens, home of the fabled Pool of Revirgination ...
